Monster (モンスター, Monsutā?) is a section from the Final Fantasy IX Ultimania. It is the fifth chapter of ten, and it details the enemies of Final Fantasy IX. It gives each enemy's stats, elements, status resistances, abilities, and additional information. Preceding the entries to the enemies is an index. The index organizes the enemy in alphabetical order, with the numbers assigned to them in the section on the left, and the page they appear in on the right. Three enemies appear per page.
Since the Ultimania is a Japanese only publication, the enemy names are written in Japanese. For the enemies Japanese names, they can be found here. Unlike the Monster section of the Final Fantasy VIII Ultimania, every enemy has an entry and no exception is made for the final bosses. There are 197 enemies in total. Enemies considered bosses have a red-outlined black-circle with the word "BOSS" in red in the center. Despite the number of single-time storyline battles fought before, the first enemy the Ultimania considers a boss is Plant Brain.

Etymology[]
monster is any creature, usually found in legends or horror fiction, that is often hideous and may produce fear or physical harm by its appearance or its actions. The word "monster" derives from Latin monstrum, meaning an aberrant occurrence, usually biological, that was taken as a sign that something was wrong within the natural order.
