John Corben was a criminal who was severely injured in a car crash and was found by Dr. Emmet Vale. Unable to save him through medical science alone, the scientist transformed Corben into a cyborg powered by the radioactive alien substance known as Kryptonite. The scientist died soon after (not by Corben's own hand) and Corben would not long after become a foe to Superman as the cyborg supervillain Metallo.
