I never intended to hurt anyone! Dr. Blackburn was in charge of procurement. He told us they were volunteers. It was only later that... but by then... please understand, we were so close. It could have ended any day. And everything we did was for the greater good. We must carry forward what we learned or all that sacrifice would have been for nothing.

Doctor Jain, called Jainy by Nellie Wright, is a former West Tek employee and research colleague of Doctor Edgar Blackburn in Appalachia.

Background[]

Jain was a college associate of both Dr. Blackburn and Dr. Farha, though he and Blackburn only became familiar with each other after they both went on to work at West Tek. Jain believes that all life is sacred and is said to be a worrywart by Nellie.

Surviving the Great War, Jain was recruited by Farha to join Blackburn's research efforts on the Forced Evolutionary Virus, convinced of the need to adapt the human race for the hostile conditions of the wasteland.[1][2] When faced with the immorality of their research, especially their human experimentation, Jain claims that he initially assumed their test subjects to be volunteers and only realized the truth when they had gone too far to stop.[3]

The Catalyst

Effects of player's actions[]

The Catalyst: Jain and his team may be spared or killed depending on the Vault Dweller's influence. He mentions he wants to finish the FEV formula, not wanting all the sacrifices to be wasted, saying they can do animal experimentation only. He is saddened by Blackburn's death, saying the world has lost a visionary intellect.

If his life is spared, he can later be found in Fort Atlas. He thanks the Vault Dweller for sparing his life, saying the Brotherhood's mercy will not go to waste and that he only wanted to help. He assures the Vault Dweller that his group will help humanity. He wonders if the lives lost were really so high, wondering how things got so out of hand. He also comments he misses Dr. Blackburn's sense of vision.

Doctor Farha: "Dr. Blackburn and Dr. Jain were my college associates. They didn't know each other at the time. I met Nellie when she broke through my window to search for scraps. As Wasteland survivors do. She was more interested in my research notes than my leftovers. So I took her in and taught her what I know."

  3. Vault Dweller: "Do you not consider kidnapping and human experimentation to be violence?"
Doctor Jain: "We were so close to improving the human race as we know it. The world has changed, my friend. How are we to survive if we don't change with it? I never intended to hurt anyone.
