The Amazing Race 3 is the third season of the reality television show, The Amazing Race. It premiered on October 2, 2002 and ended on December 18, 2002 on CBS. The entire season was released on DVD on November 22, 2011.[1]
Development[]
CBS officially ordered this season in May 2002.[2] Applications were due on March 8, 2002, while casting interviews were conducted from April to July 2002.[3][4]
Filming began on August 9, 2002 and concluded on September 8, 2002. This season traveled a total of 41,000 miles (66,000 km) across twelve countries on four continents, all of which were visited for the first time, unlike the previous season.[5]
Royal Caribbean and Kodak were the two official sponsors of the season and would provide the prizes awarded to first place teams on certain legs, while T-Mobile sponsored a task in the ninth leg.
Twists/Changes[]
- Expanded Cast: For the first time, the Race featured 12 teams.
- Phone Call Home: In the ninth leg, teams were provided with a T-Mobile phone to call their loved ones back home. However, they had to complete the call before heading inside their vehicle and continue racing.
- Rules and Penalties: The following rules and penalties were revealed on this season:
- Following a controversial incident in the previous season, a team whose production-provided vehicle breaks down outside of their control may now request for a replacement vehicle. However, no time credit will be given for time lost.
- When booking a flight itinerary, a team may fly only on economy class tickets. However, they may be moved up to business or first class seats solely at the airline's discretion.
- A team may purchase business or first class tickets to reserve seats on a flight. However, they may not fly on these tickets and must either swap them for economy class tickets or otherwise book another flight itinerary on economy class tickets.
- A team that improperly completes a Detour would incur a penalty of 30-minutes plus time gained, which would be applied at the start of the next leg. This penalty was previously seen in The Amazing Race 1, though the exact length of the penalty was unspecified at the time.
- A team that takes a form of transportation other than what is specified in their clue would incur a penalty of 30-minutes plus time gained.
- A team that accidentally skips a Route Marker would be turned away from the Pit Stop and told to complete any missed task.
- A team that completes an action during a task that violates any provision explicitly prohibited in their clue would incur a 1-hour penalty.
