The Amazing Race 19

The Amazing Race 19 is the nineteenth season of the reality television show, The Amazing Race. It premiered on September 25, 2011 and ended on December 11, 2011 on CBS. The entire season was released on DVD on October 7, 2015.

Production[]

Applications for the 19th season were due on January 4, 2011. Semi-finalist interviews and the final casting interviews took place in Los Angeles in March 2011.

Filming began on June 18, 2011 and concluded on July 10, 2011. This season traveled a total of 35,000 miles (56,000 km), across ten countries and five continents.

The fifth leg was originally supposed to be in Laos. However, a monsoon caused heavy flooding in the country and forced production to construct an additional leg in Thailand instead. Laos was eventually visited in The Amazing Race 31.^[1]

Travelocity, Discover, and Ford were the official sponsors during this season and would provide the prizes awarded to first place teams on certain legs.

Twists/Changes[]

• Roadblock Limits: This season featured 13 Roadblocks, with team members limited to performing a maximum of 6 Roadblocks before the final leg, leaving for a maximum Roadblock split of 7-6.
• Hazard: The last team to complete the Starting Line Task was penalized with an additional task in the first leg that only they would have to perform.
• Express Pass: The team that wins the first leg would be awarded the Express Pass, which allows them to skip any task of their choosing until the end of the eighth leg.
• Speed Bump: A team that came in last place on a Non-Elimination Leg would encounter an additional task in the following leg that only they would have to perform.
• Double Elimination: In the second leg, the last two teams to check in at the Pit Stop would both be eliminated.
• Double U-Turn: Double U-Turns are available on certain legs of the Race. Beginning with this season, the U-Turn board now has electronic tablets instead of physical photos, removing the need for teams to hold on to their "Courtesy Of" photos.
• No-Rest Leg: Upon checking in at the Pit Stop at the end of the ninth leg, teams were given their next clue by host Phil Keoghan and immediately began the next leg. The first team to arrive received a prize, while the last place team did not face a penalty.
• Rules and Penalties: The following rule and penalty was revealed on this season:
  • A team that improperly completes a Detour would incur a 15-minute penalty. The penalty for such an infraction was previously 30 minutes plus time gained applied at the start of the next leg, as of The Amazing Race 3.

Notes: 1: Kaylani performed the Hazard task. 2: Eight of the 11 teams arrived at the Pit Stop without donating all of their money at the 'Aisyiyah Orphanage, and had to go back and donate the rest of their money before being allowed to check in. The initial placements for all teams are as follows (the three boldfaced teams were not turned back): 1st: Ernie & Cindy; 2nd: Liz & Marie; 3rd: Bill & Cathi; 4th: Andy & Tommy; 5th: Jeremy & Sandy; 6th: Justin & Jennifer; 7th: Amani & Marcus; 8th: Laurence & Zac; 9th: Ethan & Jenna; 10th: Kaylani & Lisa; 11th: Ron & Bill 3: Leg 2 was a Double Elimination Leg. The last two teams to be checked in at the Pit Stop were both eliminated. 4: Laurence & Zac initially arrived 1st, but were issued a 15-minute penalty for using more than the allowed number of buckets at the Grass Fed Detour. During this time, Andy & Tommy checked in for a 1st place finish, dropping Laurence & Zac to 2nd. 5: Leg 5 had two Roadblocks and no Detour. The team member who sat out the first Roadblock was required to perform the second one. 6: Justin & Jennifer and Bill & Cathi initially arrived in 1st and 3rd, respectively, but did not pay the truck drivers who helped them to the Pit Stop. They were required to turn back and pay their drivers, ultimately dropping them to 2nd and 6th, respectively. 7: Ernie & Cindy used the Express Pass to bypass the Dugout Detour in Leg 7. 8: Laurence & Zac used their U-Turn power on Amani & Marcus. However, Amani & Marcus had already passed them and were not affected by the U-Turn. 9: Leg 9 had no mandatory rest period between legs, and all teams were ordered to continue racing. The team who checked in last on this leg did not face a Speed Bump in the next leg.
