Zukan is the main antagonist of "Warlord", the penultimate episode of Blake's 7.
He was portrayed by Roy Boyd.
History[]
Zukan was the president of Betafarl, one of the independent worlds contacted by Avon as part of his plan to form an alliance against the Terran Federation. He was mistrusted by his neighbours, who were aware that he had long coveted their territory. Nevertheless, when he came to Xenon for Avon's conference, offering not only his services but also production facilities to manufacture the vaccine against pylene-50, they accepted him, aware that the alliance would not stand a chance without his support.
However, in reality Zukan was working with Servalan to sabotage the alliance, having been promised the Federation would allow him to conquer his neighbours in return. Working with his deputy Finn, he planted explosives around the base and also sabotaged the factory equipment he had brought. He was furious to learn that his daughter Zeeona had accompanied the Betafarl fleet to Xenon and was romantically involved with Tarrant. On learning she intended to return to Betafarl with him aboard Scorpio, he asked Avon to captain the ship instead.
Zukan and Finn departed the planet, triggering their explosives which trapped the crew inside the base and also released the airborne radioactive virus that Zukan had planted inside the factory equipment, leaving the crew stranded in the control room with the air supply shut down. Zukan and Finn met with Servalan and together they received the report that a Federation ambush had captured Avon and that Zeeona was with them. (In fact, it was Soolin, who had pretended to be Zeeona.) Zukan did however refuse to reveal the location of the Seven's base.
Left alone, Zukan expressed his regret to Finn that releasing the virus had caused the death of eleven Betafarl technicians. It was then that they discovered Servalan had planted a bomb in their ship's airlock. Zukan ordered Finn to remove it, then ejected him into space. However, the bomb went off, badly damaging the ship. With Avon having escaped the trap and en route to Betafarl aboard Scorpio, Zukan contacted him and said he would reveal how the crew trapped on Xenon could get fresh air if Scorpio would rescue him. However, there was no way for Scorpio to reach him before the air ran out. Zukan refused to believe Avon would rescue him if he revealed it, instead suggesting two of the crew die so the others could survive. Zeeona contacted him to let him know she was still on Xenon and beg him to help, but, having heard the report of her being on Betafarl, he refused to believe it. Avon worked out which air conduits were safe without his help and Zukan was killed when his ship exploded.
