NOTE: This article is about the incarnation of Sub-Zero from the 2021 movie. The mainstream version can be found here: Noob Saibot (Mortal Kombat).
Villain Overview

I am no longer Bi-Han. I am Sub-Zero.
~ Sub-Zero to Shang Tsung. And his famous quote.
For the Lin Kuei.
~ Sub-Zero's last words.

Bi-Han, also known as Sub-Zero, is the secondary antagonist of the 2021 live-action film Mortal Kombat.

He is a member of the Lin Kuei clan and the eternal archenemy of Hanzo Hasashi. He is also the right-hand man of the sorcerer Shang Tsung. Having pledged his allegiance to Outworld, he is sent to kill all of Earthrealm's champions before the Mortal Kombat tournament, which included Hasashi's descendant, Cole Young.

He was portrayed by Joe Taslim, who also played Manas in Star Trek: Beyond.

Personality[]

Fitting to his alias, Bi-Han is a cold-hearted assassin devoted to Shang Tsung's loyalty. As such, he carries out his tasks without hesitation. He is a sadistic individual who initially appears to be affable towards Hanzo's family before murdering them in cold blood. He appears to be very remorseless of his actions, having no care of endangering and harming innocent bystanders, despite not being his targets. When facing against his specific targets, he enjoys making them suffer through a slow, painful death through torturing them with his powers before finishing them off.

However, his actor stated in an interview that after killing Hanzo's family, Bi-Han did feel genuine remorse as it was the first time he killed a child. This would not last long though, as after some time he became a completely remorseless monster.

Biography[]

Past[]

Bi-Han in an unknown period of time became a member of the Lin Kuei clan and a servant of Shang Tsung. One day, Shang Tsung realized that an ancient prophecy might come true to unite a generation of contestants to defend the Earth Realm from the Outworld. He ordered Bi-Han to murder the entire Shirai Ryu clan to prevent the prophecy from coming true, including giving the Outworld a chance to take over the Earth Realm.

Bi-Han traveled to the place where the clan lived and murdered one of the clan members. Then he entered Hanzo Hahashi's hut where he found his wife and son. Bi-Han froze them both, killing them. Hanzo found their frozen bodies and was distraught at their death. The rest of the Lin Kuei then came to kill him, but Hanzo took them all down effortlessly. Then he went to the forest where Bi-Han was sitting, waiting for him.

Getting up, he said that on that day the Hahashi family would disappear from the earth. Hanzo and Bi-Han started fighting each other, wounding them both. Finally, Bi-Han managed to stab him with a kunai, killing him. But without Bi-Han's knowledge, Hanzo's wife hid her daughter before her death, who was later found by Lord Raiden, and who would later become the ancestor of the main character of the film, Cole Young.

Hunting down Champions[]

400 years later in Outworld, Bi-Han meets with Shang Tsung who warns the cryomancer ninja about that the profecy is upon them and they're endangered of losing the tenth tournament of Mortal Kombat. Bi-Han counters that there is no prophecy, that he killed Hanzo Hasashi ages ago. However Shang Tsung replies that things cannot be left for chance and orders him to kill all the Earthrealm's champions which Bi-han obeys, not before telling him to Shang "I'm no longer Bi-Han, I'm Sub-Zero".

Now in Earthrealm, in Illinois, Chicago, Sub-Zero attacks a restaurant where was Cole Young, a washed-up MMA figther, as well as his wife Allison and daughter Emily. However before Sub-Zero could kill them, they are rescued by a man driving a truck who resulted being Jax Briggs, Jax tells to Cole that he need to seek out the general Sonya Blade, then Sub-Zero lures Jax to an abandoned warehouse turning into an ice palace, Jax engages with a fight with him with the hope of buying Cole some time since he was not match for Sub-Zero, the ninja ends the brief fight by freezing both Jax arms and shattering them to pieces and throwing him to the floor far below and leaving him for death, however he doesn't counted that Jax would be saved by no one more than Liu Kang to take him to Raiden's temple in order to heal his wounds.

As the champions of Earthrealm gather, Sub-Zero invades Lord Raiden's temple. Liu Kang shoots a ball of fire at him, but he simply dodges it, the retaliates with his own blast of ice, knocking down the monk. He then rushes Kang and tries to freeze him, but Kung Lao knocks him away by attacking with his razor-brimmed hat. Sub-Zero is then joined by Shang Tsung and Mileena, with the sorcerer declaring that it is time to end things. Raiden, however, warns him that it is forbidden to declare victory before the tournament and erects and energy barrier to keep them all out. Before leaving, Sub-Zero stares at Raiden and also seems to show an interest in Cole.

The training of the Earth's champions begins but since Cole's training isn't bearing fruit to unlock his Arcana Raiden decides to send him back to his home with his family, not before revealing to Cole that he is descent of the great Hanzo Hasashi who was murdered ages ago by Sub-Zero when he was still known for his real name Bi-han and the same man who attacked him and his family. Meanwhile in the Outworld, Sub-Zero and the rest of Shang Tsung's group (formed by Nitara, General Reiko, Mileena, Kabal and Sub-Zero himself) are hatching a plan to destroy the energy shield to end the profecy once for all, Kabal suggest to convince Kano to betray the Earth and join them, thanks to the latter help Shang Tsung and the Outworld group manages to invade Raiden's Temple and the fight with Earthrealm group begins, altough Sub-Zero decides to stay out of the action and close to Shang Tsung, observing how the two groups fight, during this Raiden returns Cole back to the temple who was victorius against the Prince Goro (who was sent by Shang Tsung to kill Cole and his family) thanks to him awakening his Arcana which confirmed that Hanzo's blood still lives in him, stunning Sub-Zero. He then tries to transport Cole away but Shang shouts to stop him and Sub-Zero blasts Cole to the ground. He then moves to attack, but Kung Lao appears and knocks him away. In retaliation, Shang sucks out Lao's soul.

Rematch with Hasashi and death[]

After this events, Raiden teleports his team to the Void, a safe place where they can plan their next move, the team decides to split up to confront the Outworld group individually to at last defeat Sub-Zero all together, however this plan is truncated due of Sub-Zero paying a visit to Cole's home, turning it into another palace of ice and trapping Cole's wife and daughter. He then appears after Cole and Sonya Blade are victorious against Mileena, showing Cole a lock of his daughter's hair, then freezing and shattering it. Cole, shocked, is tricked into following him through his black portal, back to his home. There, Sub-Zero declares that the Hasashi bloodline will end and quickly gains the upper-hand by repeatedly encasing Cole in ice and blasting him away. Cole, however, fights using the blade of Hanzo given to him by Raiden and, to Sub-Zero's shock, Hanzo Hasashi himself appears, declaring himself to have risen from Hell to kill him. An epic battle begins, Sub-Zero wielding a blade of ice, but Hanzo manages to bring him to the ground. He then removes his mask, asking him if he remembers his face and declaring himself to be Scorpion.

The two continue the fight and Cole joins them, having left them for trying to free his family, Sub-Zero finds himself cornered due of the both warriors efforts combined, after removing part of his armor in order to gain more mobility, he manages to incapacitate Scorpion, leaving Cole to fight him alone but Cole manages to down him on his own. Scorpion then shows his fire powers to use them to free Cole's family from Sub-Zero's ice, Sub-Zero (heavily wounded) takes his helmet off and declaring once more "for The Lin Kuei", however Scorpion manages to down him with his chains, then Scorpion tells to Cole to leaving them alone, even if he didn't understand a word, Cole knew his intentions, Scorpion removes his mask and before giving the fatal move, Hanzo says to Bi-Han about how he wished him to burn in the fires of hell but instead, he learned to control it, he then breathes fire and burns Sub-zero alive, with Hanzo ending his adversary life and avenging his clan, his family and his own death after so much time.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Cryokinesis: Sub-Zero's powers are elementally ice-based as he controls over the element of ice. He is easily able to deep freeze opponents, to the point of them becoming brittle enough to shatter into pieces. With a single touch, he was even able to flash-freeze opponents and had the ability to freeze the entire air itself by concentrating all of his ice power into one destructive blast.
  • Weapon Creation: By shaping ice into various forms, Sub-Zero can create several weapons made of ice such as swords.

Abilities[]

  • Master Martial Artist: Sub-Zero is known to be a master hand-to-hand combatant and martial artist.
  • Master Swordsman: Sub-Zero is a highly skilled swordsman as he is capable of using ice swords in combat.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike his game counterpart, who becomes sadistically cruel and evil after being resurrected as Noob Saibot, Bi-Han appears to be evil from the very beginning during his time as Sub-Zero. Instead of being framed for the massacre of the Shirai Ryu, he appears to be the actual one responsible for the event.
    • Also, in contrast to the games, Sub-Zero appears to be the most powerful of Shang Tsung's champions, being able to take on any battle on his own and coming out victorious. The only opponent that was able to match with him was Scorpion and even then, Cole Young assisted him to defeat Sub-Zero together.
  • According to Joe Taslim, Bi-Han is usually against killing children, but because he strictly follows the orders given to him from his superiors, he is willing to carry such acts, even if it goes against his morals. This is why he tells Shang Tsung he goes by his alias now as a means to distance himself from Bi-Han.
    • This would also explain why he acted friendly towards Hanzo's eldest child before murdering him with his mother as by this point, he has long abandoned his former self and embraced his murderous role as Sub-Zero.
