“ | I am used to being called a liar. If you want to call me less than a Magic God to soothe your own pitiful self-respect, go right ahead. There is no point in holding me within the infield of “magicians” or driving me into the outfield of “Magic Gods”. My existence can only be described as “me”. I am a third category. I am neither a magician nor a Magic God. I am St. Germain. No other term can describe me, but it seems some stubborn people have difficulty understanding that on a conceptual level. It is similar to how those obsessed with logic and numbers cannot understand the sparkle of the artificially-stabilized non-equilibrium structure that is a diamond. | „ |
~ St. Germain |
St. Germain is a major antagonist of the A Certain Magical Index franchise, serving as the titular main antagonist of the St. Germain Arc and a supporting character in the Christmas Day Arc.
It is a mysterious being who claims to be the legendary Count of Saint Germain, a historical figure who was the subject of wild speculation. However, it is actually a form of collective consciousness who takes on multiple host bodies, spread via microbes from a black crystal/pill form inserted into the host. It is also the arch-nemesis of Shinka Kanou.
Appearance[]
Being a collective identity, St. Germain has no true form and the appearances of its host bodies varies in gender and age. However, they all have similar attires which consists of tailcoats, monocles and top hats, resembling something akin to a stage magician. It also takes the form of either a black pill or a crystal.
During the events of the St. Germain Arc, the primary host body that St. Germain appeared in was that of a young woman around college-age with waist-length, wavy blonde hair, blue eyes and white skin. She resembles an aged-up Frenda Seivulun, something which St. Germain uses to manipulate Kanou. She wears a golden, wing-shaped monocle on her left eye and a tailcoat resembling a stage magician's bunny suit and jacket combination.
Personality[]
St. Germain is an extremely manipulative, cunning, opportunistic and deceitful liar, though he refuses admit that. He has no qualms with spreading various lies or falsehoods to deceive others and will manipulate anyone he can for the sake of his goals. St. Germain is very callous and uncaring, showing a blatant disregard for those he manipulates and is quite willing to send them to their deaths or subject them to untold cruelty. He doesn't care what happens to its host bodies as he claims to always has some in reserve. He is also willing to force espers he has controlled to perform magic and injure themselves.
Given he's a liar, St. Germain will often twist or outright trampling the truth to make his lies more credible. He's shown to be incredibly egoistical and narcissistic, holding himself in very high regard and will denounce others who deem him as "delusional" or "foolish". He also arrogantly claims that he's an entire third category separate from Magicians and Magic Gods. St. Germain is also quite theatrical, as shown by his conversation with Shinka Kanou.
However, many of St. Germain's actions are illogical or contradictory in nature and his motives will change frequently. He's unable to keep up a lie for long and will make up new goals on the spot, overwriting his own memories and thought processes, and fabricating his morality afterwards, all while making it seem like its part of a grand masterplan. As a result of the continual lying to both others and himself, St. Germain's mind is shown to be fragmented and an incoherent mess that cannot be truly called his own.
In Genesis Testament, one of the St. Germain microbes is shown to be willing to join forces with Touma Kamijou to battle Anna Sprengel and Aiwass. It even was willing to sacrifice it's own existence to save Touma's life.
Biography[]
St. Germain is a legendary figure said to have been a mysterious noble who appeared throughout medieval Europe's history over multiple regions and across multiple time periods. Among other things, he is said to have acquired a secret technique of immortality, not aging and eating nothing but water, wheat and pills. It is also said, from the strange and irregular frequency of his appearances and records of him possessing knowledge he should have had no way of knowing, that he had a method of traveling through time. He is also said to be capable of perfectly repairing scratched diamonds, a skill prized by nobles, and said to have written a grimoire owned by Cagliostro.
In the legends and records associated with him, nothing is truly known of St. Germain, with no accurate records of birth or death, no claims of descent, no reliable graves and no record of defeat. However, in reality, St. Germain was originally nothing more than a name associated with a rare sort of con artist. The identity of St. Germain was built from the ground up, using deceptions such as lies of places never visited, forged and delayed letters, and false appraisals, to support the various claims that were made, and was used as a sort of free pass to attend formal events or acquire investments.
Wile the identity of St. Germain was initially nothing but a name and a free pass with no credibility, at some point someone gave it "life", using existing legends and magic to see if they could make it real and then stimulating the small core they had created within the sea of knowledge to create a real crystal. Whether this was done out of fascination or to disguise something else isn't known, but the collective identity of St. Germain that was given life survived, using the alluring spread of legend to pass between those involved and those seeking to be witnesses, synchronizing and infecting their minds with St. Germain's ideology and organizing them into a single crystal.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
Collective Identity: St. Germain is a superorganism in the form of a collective identity which is held between various members of a synchronized and parallel hivemind network with a structure similar to that of a pure diamond. St. Germain is able to takeover the bodies of random individuals which allows it to possess multiple bodies simultaneously. It's best described as a virus that literally infects people with microbes and add them to its collective. It can brainwash people and synchronize them into joining the St. Germain network by forcing them into something like an acting trance and can overwrite its own memories and thought processes on the spot. All infected individuals will have the same magic abilities as the others, even if they didn't know anything about magic previous to joining the network. Each of the host bodies are also telepathically linked to one another. Due to not having a physical form of its own, St. Germain is able to persist even with the loss of a member, making it immortal. Moreover, St. Germain also takes the form of black pills comprised of microbes, dried by the thousands and while dry, mostly inert but capable of remaining alive for years. When the microbes are absorbed by liquid, such as saliva, they resume functioning and invade the body of the person who has ingested them.
Chambord: A powerful spiritual item that takes the form of a spear in the shape of a treble clef, with the words 'St. Germain' engraved on it, and St. Germain's primary weapon. Named after the site of his former laboratory, it provides the tools St. Germain needs to pursue his research themes. The Chambord is fairly durable and is able to be modified, as St. Germain made the Chambord capable of withstanding and catching a shot from Shizuri Mugino's Meltdowner after experiencing the attack once in one of his bodies.
- Carbon Manipulation: The Chambord's main ability allows St. Germain to manipulate carbon and all carbon-based materials, such as diamonds, melting them down and forming them into various constructs, such as spears, walls, or even more Chambords for the new members of the group. In carbon-rich environments such as the Dianoid, which is almost entirely constructed from carbon-based materials, St. Germain is shown to be extremely powerful, able to warp and control the surroundings. It is capable of skewering its opponent with spears from all directions, with each individual St. Germain being able to create around a hundred carbon spears. If Touma were to break any bones, St. Germain was confident they could provide him a diamond exoskeleton. It can also release deadly carbon monoxide into the air.
- Organic Matter Manipulation: The Chambord also allows St. Germain to manipulate all organic materials, since organic matter is comprised of carbon as well. Aside from the microbes that allows it to spread, St. Germain is capable of freely manipulating carbon-based lifeforms such as humans through contact with its magic, allowing it to deform human bodies. For example, St. Germain's carbon spears have thin hair-like points extend fifty to one hundred centimeters from the tip, and when they touch a carbon-based structure they can open a hole, using this as an attack or to bypass a physical obstacle and continue to target the enemy behind it.
- Chlorokinetic Constructs: An extension of its ability to control organic matter, St. Germain can use Chambord to create plants-like creatures, such as beasts or golems made up of plant cells. As opposed to ordinary plant cells, the plant cells created by Chambord are given their own different functions and are reunified to stimulate optimization. The creatures created from the plant matter are stronger than ones of animal matter, given the cell wall that the plant cells have as opposed to an animal cell's membrane. These incomplete beasts can also incorporate St. Germains into their structure and can split into different smaller creatures in a fashion similar to a Russian nesting doll. They are also capable of producing and emitting carbon monoxide as an attack. The St. Germains can also wrap roots and vines around their legs to create enormous springs that allow them to jump around the walls and ceiling at high speeds.
Abilities[]
Keen Intellect: St. Germain is a very cunning and manipulative entity with a lot of knowledge and experience. It is a highly deceptive and skilled liar, able to fool people through its words alone. It gets Shinka Kanou to trust it by appearing to him in a body that resembles his friend Frenda Seivelun and pretended to support his quest to avenge Frenda while actually using him in its scheme to usurp the Magic Gods and plotting to send Shinka to his death. However, St. Germain's intellect is often offset by its incredible ego and inability to stick to a goal or a logical course of action.
