~ Hissa explaining his plan to take over the galaxy. |
Grand Moff Bertroff Hissa is a major antagonist in the Jedi Prince series of young adult novels set in the Star Wars universe. He is a corrupt Imperial Governor, or Grand Moff, who conspires with his fellow Grand Moffs to take over the galaxy by passing off the con artist Trioculus as Emperor Palpatine's son and installing him as a puppet ruler.
Biography[]
The Glove of Darth Vader[]
In the aftermath of Emperor Palpatine's death and the fall of the Galactic Empire, the Moffs of the Imperial territories are fighting each other for power amid the lack of a central governing authority. Hissa and his cronies form the Central Committee of Grand Moffs to overthrow Ysanne Isard, who had been next in line for control of the Empire following the deaths of Palpatine and Darth Vader.
To that end, Hissa and his cohorts recruit three-eyed con artist Trioculus to pose as Palpatine's long-lost son and try to put him on the Imperial throne; Hissa plans to use him as a puppet and rule the galaxy himself as the power behind the throne. Meanwhile, they imprison Palpatine's real son, Triclops, in the spice mines of Kessell and torture him until he goes insane.
Kadann, Supreme Prophet of the Dark Side, has foretold that the next ruler of the galaxy will wear Vader's right-hand glove, which his son Luke Skywalker cut off during their duel on the second Death Star prior to its destruction. Hissa therefore begins searching for the glove for Trioculus to wear in order to get Kadann's blessing for his new empire. He also outfits Trioculus with finger implants that shoot bolts of electricity to make it appear that he has Palpatine's power of Force lightning.
Hissa convenes a meeting of high-ranking Imperial politicians and presents Trioculus to them as their new Emperor. Trioculus' display of "Force lightning" against an Imperial who openly doubts him cows the others into obedience. Trioculus tells Hissa to find Vader's glove for him, and Hissa sends search droids all over the galaxy, finally finding the glove on Mon Calamari.
Hissa and Trioculus go to Mon Calamari to retrieve the glove, but their plans are foiled by Luke Skywalker and Admiral Gial Ackbar, who subdue Trioculus and force him to flee with Hissa. Ultimately, however, they find the glove and use it to seize power.
The Lost City of the Jedi[]
Hissa and Trioculus meet with Kadann, who immediately sees through their ruse. Hissa tells Kadann their entire plan, and Kadann gives them his blessing after he agrees to find and kill the Jedi Prince, Triclops' young son Ken, who lives in the fabled Lost City of the Jedi.
To find Ken, Hissa has Trioculus send a droid into the Jedi Temple containing a message from the latter, threatening to trigger the droid's self-destruct mechanism and kill everyone in the Temple unless the revealed the location of the Lost City. Luke Skywalker manages to destroy the droid before it explodes, however. Undeterred, Hissa orders Imperial stormtroopers to burn down the forests on Yavin 4, the site of the Rebel Alliance's headquarters, in order to scare them into revealing the Lost City's location.
Meanwhile, Vader's glove causes Trioculus to go blind in all three eyes, so Hissa looks for a cure. He hires a healer to bring him a rare plant that cures blindness, but the healer finds that the plant has all but gone extinct - ironically, the only place it can be found is the forests of Yavin, which Hissa had ordered burned down. The healer manages to find the last of the plants and cures Trioculus, who then stops wearing Vader's glove, wearing a duplicate instead. Hissa then puts a bounty on Ken across the galaxy.
Zorba the Hutt's Revenge[]
In order to put pressure on Luke to give up Ken, Hissa tells Jabba the Hutt's father Zorba that Luke's sister, Princess Leia Organa, killed his son. Zorba kidnaps Ken, while Trioculus kidnaps Leia, intent on making her his Queen; this results in a skirmish between the two warlords that results in Ken escaping and Trioculus being frozen in carbonite.
Hissa tries to free Trioculus, but the Prophets of the Dark Side take possession of the frozen tyrant before Hissa can thaw him out. They inform Hissa that Kadann has turned against him and Trioculus, and stage a coup, taking control of the galaxy.
Mission from Mount Yoda[]
Hissa tries to curry favor with the new rulers of the galaxy by attacking Leia's lover Han Solo in his ship, the Millennium Falcon. Solo escapes to the planet Duro, where the Prophets take Hissa - not to pursue Solo, but to find Triclops, who had escaped from his prison. They find Triclops and Ken with Luke, and the Prophets order Hissa to take them all prisoner. Hissa holds Ken at gunpoint to force Luke to surrender, which he does.
At that moment, however, Triclops - who, unlike Trioculus, actually has powers fueled by the dark side of the Force - uses his third eye to create a magnetic force that pulls the boy out of Hissa's clutches, and then attacks his former gaoler to get revenge for the years of torture he endured at his hands. Before Triclops can take his revenge, however, the ground crumbles under Hissa's feet, and he falls into a pit of acid, which burns away his arms and legs. Hissa survives the fall into acid, and replaces his arms with robotic prosthetics and his legs with a hoverchair.
He convenes a meeting with his fellow Moffs to plot revenge against the Prophets. They also take Zorba prisoner, and take possession of Trioculus' frozen body. They thaw out Trioculus, who threatens to have Zorba executed by throwing him into a Sarlaac Pit. Zorba makes a deal with them, however; in return for sparing his life, he would give them Leia, who he had taken prisoner. Hissa and Trioculus accept the deal, although Trioculus goes back on his word after taking Leia prisoner and has Zorba fed to the Sarlaac anyway.
Queen of the Empire[]
Trioculus forces Leia to marry him, with Hissa presiding over the wedding by reading from a Sith tome. However, they are both unaware that Trioculus' "bride" is in fact a droid replica of the Princess that Kadann had designed to kill his three-eyed foe. As Trioculus says "I do," the droid replica shoots laser beams out of its eyes, hitting him in the chest and mortally wounding him. As he dies, Trioculus makes Hissa pledge to kill Kadann and Luke, and to take back control of the galaxy.
Prophets of the Dark Side[]
Meanwhile, Zorba survives and escapes from the Sarlaac, and becomes obsessed with getting revenge against Hissa. He meets with Kadann and tells him of Hissa's treachery, convincing him to put a galaxy-wide bounty on the Moff's head. Eventually, Hissa and his fellow Moffs are captured, and Kadann puts them on trial for treason. Hissa protests his innocence, even as the other Moffs plead guilty to save their own lives. Hissa is nevertheless found guilty and sentenced to a slow, painful death: he will be starved for days until, finally, he will be fed a meal that contains flesh-eating parasites that will devour him from the inside out.
Kadann's men transport Hissa, chained to his own hoverchair, to the volcanic planet where his sentence would be carried out. Moments later, however, a sudden flood of lava engulfs him and kills him instantly.
