Birdie[note 1] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He[2] is a pink Flicky residing in Green Hill, who was formerly trapped inside E-102 Gamma during the Chaos incident.[3]
Concept and creation[]
Birdie was introduced in the game Sonic Adventure, but was unnamed until his appearance in the Sonic Prime television series. During development of the show, the role of Birdie was originally intended to be filled by his cyan brother of the same name, also from Sonic Adventure, although for unknown reasons, the role and name of the original Birdie were later applied to the pink Flicky, who was chosen to appear in the show instead.[3]
Appearance[]
Birdie is a pink Flicky of average size, with a pink body, white belly, and three-toed yellow feet. Originally, Birdie's face sported red eyes, a short yellow beak, and three tufts of hair on its forehead area. By the time of the Paradox Prism incident, Birdie's facial appearance had changed slightly, now sporting red eyes, two tufts of upright hair, and dark blue facial markings between the eyes.
History[]
Past[]
At some point in the past, Birdie and his siblings were captured by Dr. Eggman. While Birdie's cyan brother managed to escape, Birdie himself was placed inside E-102 Gamma as his power source, while Birdie's other sibling was likewise placed inside E-101 Beta.
Sonic Adventure[]
Birdie spent the majority of the Chaos incident trapped inside Gamma's body, but was eventually freed when the robot was destroyed in his final battle with Beta. After being freed, Birdie met with his newly-freed sibling, and both flew across the Egg Carrier to meet their cyan Birdie brother, who had been brought to the vessel by Amy Rose. The trio was momentarily panicked when the cyan Flicky was attacked by E-100 ZERO, but regained their composure when the rampaging robot was destroyed by Amy's fury, and the cyan bird recovered. After signaling their farewells to Amy, Birdie and his siblings flew away to live in peace.
A short while after, Birdie briefly returned to Amy's side during Perfect Chaos' rampage on Station Square, accompanying her while she searched for a discarded Chaos Emerald.
Powers and abilities[]
Being a Flicky, Birdie is capable of flight.

Sonic X[]
In the Sonic X anime series, Birdie appears, but is unnamed. In the show, he shares an almost similar role to his game counterpart, being a kidnapped pink Flicky who was captured by Dr. Eggman, and placed within E-102 Gamma. After Gamma was destroyed by E-101 "Kai", Birdie was freed, and flew away with his siblings to live in peace.[4]
Sonic Prime[]
In the Sonic Prime series, Birdie appears as an animal in Green Hill's fauna. Prior to the main events of the show, he witnessed several actions and adventures taken by Sonic and his friends, such as when Amy gathered the team around a palm tree to "gift" it to Sonic[5], or when Sonic fought Shadow in Hedgehog's Pass. However, when Sonic accidentally shattered the Paradox Prism, Birdie lost physical form and became a ghost in Ghost Hill[6], while the Prism Shards manifested Shatterspaces, two of which featured counterparts of Birdie.[7][8]
After Sonic restored the Paradox Prism to its complete form, Green Hill, and by extension Birdie, was restored to its normal form.[9]
Books and comics[]
Archie Comics[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Birdie is a brown female Flicky that previously was trapped inside E-102 Gamma. She is also the mother of Birdy, a green baby Flicky that befriended Amy.[10][11] Upon seeing her child in captivity aboard the Egg Carrier, Birdie's sheer will inside Gamma mixed with his programming, and allowed the robot to revolt against his creator.[11] Roughly a year later, Birdie was finally freed from Gamma when E-123 Omega destroyed him.[10]

Notes[]
- ↑ While the "main" version of this character is not named in Sonic Prime, two alternate counterparts of him appear, both of which are named "Birdie". The New Yoke City counterpart in particular is physically identical to the mainline version, implying they also bear the same name.
