Not to be confused with New York City.

I was trained by the misery of life and this foul and heartless city.

Tails Nine, "Shattered"

New Yoke City (ニューヨウクシティ[1] Nyūyouku Shiti?) is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a dystopian city ruled by the Chaos Council, entirely industrialized and heavily polluted, and a twisted version of Green Hill from another universe or as Nine dubbed it, a Shatterspace.

Description[]

New Yoke City is a dystopian city on an unnamed planet, where Sonic and Shadow never existed. As such, New Yoke City is a miserable and oppressive place, entirely industrialized with ugly technology and neon lighting everywhere. The skies surrounding the city are constantly filled with smog. There is no trace of nature (save for a lone palm tree in the Resistance base); it is all metal, glass and concrete. Many buildings are egg-shaped.

There is Egg Propaganda everywhere, and robots patrol the streets to ensure that the citizens stay in line. Even the sidewalks are motorized and the people generally do not walk along them, but they allow themselves to be moved at an orderly pace.

History[]

Past[]

Oh, you mean divide the city?
Five sectors. One for each of us.
The baby has a point. Surely, a council of equals is preferable to total chaos.
Conquer then divide? So be it.

Chaos Council after hearing Dr. Babble's idea, "Double Trouble"

It is unknown how exactly New Yoke was first built, as Nine was living in it during the Shatterspace's "Classic" era. But after the Chaos Council successfully took over Green Hill and thus expanded New Yoke City, they argued over who should rule the now huge in size city. They kept arguing until Dr. Babble had an idea on dividing the city into five sectors for each leader, which they all agreed to.

TV series[]

Season one[]

In Sonic Prime, following the Paradox Prism's shattering at the hands of Sonic the Hedgehog, he was tossed through the Shatterverse and teleported to New Yoke City. Sonic quickly tried to assess the situation, only to draw the attention of the Chaos Council's Eggforcers, due to him being unrecorded in the citizen database after he was caught talking with Denizen 1998 and his Froggy, who Sonic thought was Big and Froggy. Despite working against the strange energy which had been bonded to his shoes during the shattering of the Paradox Prism, Sonic escaped the Eggforcers after a lengthy chase, and ran into Dr. Babble’s section of the city. Sonic soon encountered Babble, but outsmarted him and escaped to the Scareport, where he saw a citizen he thought was Tails (though in actuality, it was his native counterpart, Tails Nine).

In "The Yoke's on You", a flashback shows that New Yoke City used to be just like Green Hill, a beautiful tropical land with many palm trees, blue lakes, hills and loops. Rebel Rouge and Renegade Knucks also used to live in peace in this dimension's Green Hill. However, one day, the Chaos Council appeared and, since Sonic never existed in this dimension, no one stopped the Chaos Council from fulfilling their evil plans. They destroyed the land, cutting all trees and drying out the lakes, transforming the place in the city it is now. This led Rebel and Knucks to create the Resistance to take the Chaos Council down. The Resistance was able to save one palm tree from their original home and keep it safe in their hideout base.

Season two[]

New Yoke appears once again in Season two, first in "A Madness to Their Methods" and appears to be much freer due to the Chaos Council not being around. Rebel and Renegade comment on how this was everything they hoped for them and the rest of the citizens and they could finally return New Yoke to how it was supposed to be. Unfortunately, the Chaos Council returned in that instant, re-powering the city upon their arrival, and enforcing their rule once again. Soon, the city dissolves into chaos with the Eggforcers forcing everyone back in line and attacking the rebels, as well as the Chaos Council showing off their latest Jumbo Eggforcers powered by the Shard Energy. New Yoke's streets were crawling with the super-charged bots, and it took quite the effort for Sonic and the Resistance to rid them. Just when they thought it was over, the Council unleashes Chaos Sonic.

In "Double Trouble", another flashback shows how the Council originally divided the city, each into their own district so they would have equal command over their city, since they were arguing quite a bit over who should be in charge. And in the present, they all comment on how they want to change their sector now that they have unlimited power from the three Shards. Mr. Dr. Eggman requests smokestacks, Deep offers museums, and Don't wants theme parks. This leads Mr. Dr. Eggman to propose that they could terraform the other Shatterspaces and rule them right from New Yoke. With that, they start up their initiation sequence, creating portals, which lead to buildings and characteristics from New Yoke start appearing in the Boscage Maze and No Place, which started the decay of the Shatterverse. Sonic and Nine would traverse through the portals, first to No Place, then to the Boscage Maze as an attempt to get their makeshift Shard Case to Ghost Hill to restore the Paradox Prism

Season three[]

After Nine connected all of the Shards together in The Grim to reform the Paradox Prism, it accelerated the decay in New Yoke City along with the other Shatterspaces. After Shadow threw Sonic out of The Grim, Sonic was chased by Grim Birdies, so he decided to head to New Yoke to get some help. As Sonic was running, Nine used his power to turn the city over, leaving some denizens dangling, but they were saved by all three of Amy Rose's Shatter Variants and the Scavengers. Then, Rebel and Knucks showed up and Rebel decided to head to the Yoke for shelter. Sonic was then chased by the Grim Birds again on his way to the Yoke, and, as he made it, the Chaos Council, except Don't, helped him in fighting them. Inside, the heroes and the Council formed a temporary alliance in stopping Nine. The Chaos Council then used the Prism Energy that Sonic generated them by running in the hamster ball, so that could have enough energy to bring a protective dome up.

After the fight in The Grim was over, Nine used the fully restored Paradox Prism to reform the New Yoke City Gateway, along with the others.

Points of interest[]

Game appearances[]

Sonic Speed Simulator[]

In Sonic Speed Simulator, New Yoke City is represented by two areas, one named "New Yoke Tag Arena", and the other simply named "New Yoke City". The former served as a small arena for Tag matches up until its removal following the conclusion of the Sonic Prime Premiere Event, while the latter is a full Zone added by the 2.8 update.

Sonic Prime Dash[]

In Sonic Prime Dash, New Yoke City appears as one of the playable Zones.

Trivia[]

  • New Yoke City's name is a pun on "New York City", featuring the misspelling of the word “yolk” (the yellow circle inside part of an egg), referencing Dr. Eggman’s penchant for eggs.
    • When using English subtitles on Netflix, it is sometimes misspelled as "New Yolk City".
  • A "Yoke" is also a kind of leash, used to control cattle - appropriate since the citizens of New Yoke are oppressed and enslaved.
  • The place is similar to Robotropolis, a setting in the Sonic the Hedgehog television series, the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comic series, and Sonic Underground, a formerly beautiful civilization that coexisted with nature in perfect harmony, now a vast city of only both technology and pollution that is a dreary and lifeless metropolis. It also bears a heavy resemblance to Stardust Speedway's Bad Future, with both having dark red, cloudy skies and a similar cityscape setting with purple neons, and a minor one to Eggmanland (especially its counterpart from Sonic Unleashed), with both being Dr. Eggman's/the Chaos Council's ideal world.
