The Fallen Arm is an area in Xenoblade Chronicles located between the Bionis and the Mechonis directly under Galahad Fortress. As the name implies, it is the arm that was severed by the Bionis in the battle between the two Titans.
Geography[edit]
The Fallen Arm floats upon the endless ocean, between the two titans and beneath the Mechonis' sword. The Arm itself both geographically and geologically serves as a bridge between the two worlds, being overrun with organic life while sheltering the remnants of the Machina, the mechanical life of the Mechonis. Sand has accumulated at the shores of the Arm, forming scenic beaches. The broad, flat areas of the arm have become quite verdant, and host a variety of terrestrial and aerial life. Debris and wreckage from Sword Valley and Galahad Fortress commonly falls upon, or washes up onto the Arm. This can be seen with various Landmarks (Silver Wreckage, Black Wreckage, Giant Mechon Debris, etc.), as well as the rusted Mechon that patrol the land.
The Hidden Machina Village is built inside of the hand's palm, surrounded by walls on all sides. The village is largely composed of housing pods on a platform over the water, in the center of which sits the flying ship Junks. A large metal bridge leading from the arm leads to an entrance to Mechonis Field, which is rendered inaccessible after the Mechonis awakens.
Story[edit]
After the battle at Galahad Fortress, the party falls from the Sword, and they wash ashore on the arm separated from each other. First, Shulk wakes up on a beach alone. Worried, he checks his surroundings and spots the ruined Face Nemesis just at the shore. Shulk then retrieves Fiora from the wreckage and checks her condition. She is alive, but unconscious. He goes to retrieve water for her to drink, yet she remains unresponsive. Trying both to wake her and get her to drink, Shulk kisses her. This succeeds, and the two joyously embrace. Shortly afterwards, Fiora explains that until then, she had no control over her body; someone else was in control, and that she was aware of everything unfolding between Prison Island until then. Shulk expresses great displeasure at this fact, which Fiora contradicts; saying that although this person took over her body, she was not malicious in her actions or intent. She asks that Shulk let her find out what it is the other soul within her needs, and the two settle down for a while longer. Further afterward, both depart the beach to find the others. A short while ahead, they both stop to let Fiora rest; her body adjusting poorly to being outside her Face. Shulk reflects on the damage inflicted to the Monado by Egil and the Apocrypha Generator. Fiora wakes up, and asks for more water, further explaining that she has no need for food, only water. However, she appears increasingly distraught by these changes, even suggesting that Shulk ought to abandon her. He ardently refuses this, recalling the unparalleled grief he felt from watching her die in Colony 9, and vowing to keep her safe no matter what. They are then interrupted by a pair of Mechon, leaving Shulk alone to fight with a severe disadvantage.
Reyn and Sharla end up together on the Arm, and both are next seen preparing to search for the others on their own. Before setting out, however, Reyn expresses a feeling of deep uselessness to Sharla, feeling himself obsolete due to Shulk's growth as a combatant and individual. Sharla encourages him, likening this sense of futility to her own experience defending against the Mechon, and remaining strong out of sheer necessity. She maintains that even if Reyn doesn't need to, there's nothing wrong with continuing to protect his closest friend. The two continue onward, and hear sounds of fighting. They see Shulk contending with the pair of attacking Mechon, and intervene. After they defeat these Mechon, all four gather for a while and catch up. Later, they set out again, and head towards the fingers of the Arm. They stop ahead of the Radiocarpea, as Fiora can hear something, which is shown to be a group of mysterious figures walking up to them.
Dunban, Riki, and Melia have formed a group, and are next seen when Riki suggests they take a break to sleep. However, his abundant energy to fish for both himself and Dunban informs the latter that he primarily was accommodating Melia, who has fallen fast asleep. Riki also notices how concerned Dunban seems to be, which strikes him as unusually observant. Dunban offloads about his concerns regarding Fiora and Shulk; both his worry about his sister's apparent amnesia, and her relationship with Shulk potentially ending due to it. Riki reminds Dunban that he is a father, and has raised many children. He understands that Dunban raised Fiora, his sister, much like a father, and is a fatherly influence on Shulk as well. He comforts Dunban, saying that he's done right by those he protects. Later, all three are refreshed enough to continue their search, and happen to enter the Hidden Village, where the other four spot them and rush towards them. Dunban tearfully reunites with his sister, and Melia, while apparently jealous of Fiora, congratulates Shulk on their safe reunion. All seven are then approached by a group of villagers, who introduce themselves as the Machina, mechanical life born of the Mechonis. They direct the party towards Junks to speak with their chief, but not before Linada, a Machina doctor, confuses Fiora for a defective Machina. She is corrected, and learns that Fiora is a mechanized Homs, she offers treatment, due to specializing in Face pilots. She further explains within the Junks' medbay that she requires adjustments to her artificial circulatory system, and requires a Piezoelectric Unit. Meanwhile, Miqol, the head of the village, speaks to the group and requests their assistance in killing Egil, his own son.
Miqol elaborates on his stance; he states to the heroes that he witnessed the Great Battle, and that the Bionis struck first. This forever marked a change in Egil for the worse. Once a kind and caring individual, his love for his people has turned into rampant hatred for the Bionis, and all life upon it. Attempts had been made to stop him, at the cost of further Machina lives. Left with no recourse, the remaining Machina took refuge on the Arm, away from Egil and his army of Mechon. After retrieving the part needed for Fiora's recovery, the group catches some rest. The next morning, they speak with Miqol once again. Shulk tells the distended Machina elder that he will do what is necessary to stop Egil, but will attempt to reason with him. Then, Dickson enters the room, surprising all present except Miqol, who recognizes him. Dickson explains that he deduced the party must've ended up on the Arm, having fallen from Galahad Fortress. Further still, it is revealed that the experimental technology he brought to Colony 9 was derived from Machina technology offered by the village in exchange for information on the outside world. Dickson is brought up to speed, and the group prepares to head for the Mechonis itself, with the goal of reaching the capital within the titan's head.
While the party makes their final preparations to leave the Arm, Dickson grills Shulk about what he plans to do when he should meet Egil, testing his resolve. A revitalized Fiora rebuts him, affirming that Shulk will do what is right, and the others are happy to place their hopes within Shulk. This assuages Dickson's concern about his adoptive son's apparent softness, and relents. He departs the village to return to Alcamoth and organize the allied force, and the party makes tracks for Mechonis Field.
After the party escapes from Agniratha, they are taken by Junks back to the hidden village to regroup and plan their next move as Egil awakens the Mechonis.
