Prison Island is an area in Xenoblade Chronicles located above Eryth Sea. Most of the island's interior is inaccessible until much later in the story.

Geography[edit]

Prison Island floats above Eryth Sea in a similar manner to the Hovering Reefs. However, its shape and composition are unlike anything else in the region. The island is comprised of unusual black stone, and the exterior features several glowing blue lights, enormous metal stakes driven into the side of the island, and enormous chains wrapped around the main spire. It is comparable in size to Alcamoth. It sits directly above the Bionis' Occipital, on the opposite end of the sea to the city and the High Entia Tomb. The transporter to the island on Central Seal Island has been locked by seals on two nearby islands.

The path from the High Entia Transporter leads to the Prison Gate, a massive door sealed by the High Entia ancestors, with statues depicting them being placed in front. Only three levels of Prison Island can be explored during this point in the story: the Central Hall by the main entrance, the Great Canyon on the fourth level, and the Prison Terrace on the top level. Traversing between floors is made possible through the use of portals, as the island's primary transporters are disabled. Aside from the Skyrays that fly around the island, it is largely uninhabited by monsters at this time.

Story[edit]

Prison Island serves as the party's major objective following the battle with Xord. Shulk first has a vision of Prison Island when he and the group are facing Metal Face and an army of Mechon outside of Colony 6. He sees himself battling Metal Face at the top of the tower and the Monado easily cutting through his armor, and resolves to make the vision come true.

When the party finally reaches Eryth Sea, they venture to Alcamoth to request permission to enter, but are met with uncertainty from the High Entia emperor Sorean. One month prior, Sorean was shown a vision by Alvis, the royal seer, which showed him alongside the group on Prison Island and meeting his demise. When the Mechon attack the High Entia, however, Sorean chooses to go to the island to fend them off regardless of the vision. He arrives at the tower's summit and uses the Imperial Staff to reveal what had been sealed on the island, which turns out to be a Giant. The Giant allows the emperor to use his power, which creates a barrier around the island and fires bolts of lightning at the Mechon.

Once they undo the seals on the Central Seal Island transporter, the party arrives at the entrance to Prison Island. As heir to the throne, Melia is able to open the door that had been sealed by her ancestors, and the party proceeds. They soon arrive at the top, which Shulk confirms is the place from his visions, and find Sorean and the Giant on the terrace. The Giant, named Zanza, explains that he created the Monado and used it in the ancient battle against Mechonis, but that the High Entia feared the power of the Monado and imprisoned him. He then asks Shulk to free him in exchange for removing the Monado's limits and unlocking its full power. Despite Melia's uncertainty, Shulk chooses to release the Giant, but just as Zanza is about to empower the Monado, he is suddenly struck by a spear thrown by Metal Face, disabling the island's defenses.

As the Mechon land on the island, Face Nemesis attempts to mentally communicate with the dying Zanza, but is interrupted by Shulk. In the ensuing battle, Metal Face is briefly disabled by Sorean, but the Mechon retaliates by stabbing him with his claws. Shulk is distraught over failing to save him, but hears Zanza's voice tell him that he has already been given the power before his body vanishes. Shulk is then able to trans changes, and with its new power he is able to cut through Metal Face's arm. Before Shulk can strike again, his attack is intercepted by Face Nemesis, cutting it open and exposing that it is being piloted by Fiora, who seemingly has lost her memories. Shulk tries in vain to get her to remember him as the Mechon return to their base.

Following the battle, Emperor Sorean tells Melia to become the hope of the High Entia and entrusts the Monado with Shulk before passing. The party leaves the tower having resolved to get revenge on the Mechon. Some time after, Alvis arrives on the terrace and converses with Zanza's disembodied voice, who senses further trouble in the future.

After Zanza's spirit is reawakened, he returns to Prison Island to initiate the destruction and recreation of the world, sinking the island into the Bionis. The party returns to the island from the Bionis' Interior.
