The Mechonis Core is an area in Xenoblade Chronicles inside the Mechonis. It is a relatively tiny area that can be only accessed is when fighting Egil and Zanza.
Geography[edit]
Mechonis Core is effectively the Mechonis' brain, being the physical control center of the titan itself. It is entirely enclosed by the titan's head, and it is from here that Egil pilots the Mechonis through his Face. A holographic screen is projected onto the walls of the Core to allow one to see through the Mechonis' eyes. It is a very simple location visually, being a large hollow sphere with a circular hologram platform spanning the diameter of the Core from the central platform. Aside from Egil entering from the Meyneth Shrine in Agniratha, the only access to the core is a transporter near the Apocrypha Generator in the Central Factory.
After the battle against Egil, Zanza slices through the head of the Mechonis with the Bionis' Monado, exposing the core to the open sky.
Story[edit]
After Egil defeats the party in Agniratha, he retreats to the core and connects Yaldabaoth to the Mechonis, awakening the titan and allowing him to directly control it. The party returns to Mechonis through a vent on its back, and confronts Egil in the core to stop him from destroying Bionis. They try to reason with him once more, but Egil only reaffirms his intent to destroy Bionis and the Monado while denouncing Meyneth, declaring that the world has no further need of gods.
The battle ends with Shulk standing over Egil, being encouraged by Zanza's voice to kill him, but after remembering what others have said over the journey, he chooses to spare him, insisting that he will stop Egil as many times as necessary until they can reach an understanding. Impressed by his resolve, Egil reveals the true nature of Zanza and the Monado to Shulk: the Giant that claimed to be Zanza was once a friend of Egil's named Arglas, until he discovered the Monado and became Zanza's vessel, as Zanza must inhabit beings of Bionis in order perpetuate his existence. However, Egil notes that Shulk has been able to resist Zanza's influence, and now believes that he may be able to end Zanza's threat to the world, as had been his true goal all along.
Shulk offers a peaceful resolution, to which Egil agrees. At that moment, however, Shulk is shot in the back by Dickson, who is revealed to be one of Zanza's disciples, and Zanza manifests from him in a new body. Meyneth explains that, after their battle, the High Entia sealed Zanza's body within Prison Island, while the Monado, which housed his spirit, was sealed in Ose Tower. Dickson then states that the Homs that found the Monado had their lives taken by Zanza, including Shulk. Zanza then inhabited Shulk as his new vessel, becoming his life force, and Dickson raised him in anticipation of Zanza's return. Now that Zanza has been reborn, he intends to destroy the current world and remake it, and awakens the Bionis in order to destroy Meyneth and the Mechonis so that no one can interfere. Egil tries to fight back with the Mechonis, but is brought down after the Bionis' Monado cleaves Yaldabaoth in half. Before Zanza can destroy the Mechonis and the party, Meyneth manifests her own Monado and challenges Zanza.
As the two fight, Zanza realizes that Meyneth is distracted by her desire to protect Shulk and the party. He starts to direct his attacks at them instead, forcing Meyneth to emerge from Fiora's body and defend them by sacrificing herself, entrusting to them the future of the world and her wish to create a world without gods. Zanza claims Meyneth's Monado as his own and departs to initiate the destruction and recreation of the world, while the party escapes from Mechonis. Egil, however, chooses to stay behind to buy them time, using the Mechonis to allow them to flee safely and deal one last blow to Bionis before both he and the Mechonis are destroyed.
