“One foot in front of the other,” Lee murmured. One sand dollar and then another."
I loved this book so much! I've read it in one sitting.
It took me a while to get into the story and warm up to the characters, but then I couldn't put this book down.
We get many disturbing topics, such as kidnapping, sexual abuse, murders. There are some on-page heart wrenching scenes. My heart broke for green-eyed Lee over and over again. And Shaw, well I resented him for not standing up for Lee and helping him. He seemed so ruthless and cold.
This story isn't dark. Not really. At least it didn't feel dark to me. I've read many dark, twisted and also pitch black stories. Actually after reading this one I saw Lisa Henry wrote Stealing Innocents under the pen-name Cari Waites. And that book was really dark. I mean, as dark as it can get. So knowing how far this author can take us in the dark seas of imagination, The Island was bearable.
We get suspense and I'm glad the author surprised me here. Big time!
I'm pleased the bad guys (really bad guys) got what they deserved.
I simply adored Lee and Shaw. And I so needed an epilogue!!! The reason I'm not rating this with 5 full stars would be the fact that the ending wasn't exactly what I expected. Of course Lee needed time to heal, of course he needed therapy. I just feel like this took a lot of time, even if it was necessary, but we didn't get more of Lee and Shaw together. Maybe we'll get more of them in the future. A novella would be awesome.
Overall I really loved it and found myself re-reading some highlights. The writing really worked for me, so I'll be reading other books by this author....more
I absolutely LOVE the cover!! It really makes you want to discover the story. Doesn't it? [image]

I enjoyed this book way more than I expected. It has a lot of action and so much suspense. I expected something very different, an easy read, maybe a little suspense, BUT this story gave me so much more: demons, vampires, ghosts, dark forces and those who fought against them!
I was hooked from the first pages, even if I had to read twice the first sentence: "Sara's mother called him again ...", because I "tripped" at Sara and him.
I love the writing style of these authors. They didn't gave us too much from the start and I always appreciate this. I could complain the story was a little slow paced at the beginning, but I will not, because everything was revealed at the perfect time. I enjoyed discovering the story while Sara discovered Mr. Dupont's secrets.
Mr. Thaddeus Dupont - was such a complex character. I was so curious about his past! I couldn't wait for him to give us another piece of him, and for Sara to begin to understand him a little more. If he ever actually smile, Mr. Intense would be devastating.
Sarasija made me picture a very young, hansom but ingenuous man. He took his first job without even taking in consideration any danger that may come. To say his job as Dupont's assistant was very different from what he expected, is an understatement!
About Thaddeus and Sara, well despite their differences: age and experience, they feel very attracted to each other even if they are both afraid to give in to temptation. Their reasons are so different too, Dupont doesn't want to break his contract and Sara doesn't want to have an affair with his boss. But everything gets so complicated, their lives are in danger and they had to fight the evil every moment. So when they couldn't fight and gave into each other, everything felt right. All their hot moments together seem right and made me realize they mean a lot to each other and words were not necessary.
I really liked the choice of words of these 2 authors. I think it gives authenticity to Mr. Dupont having such an old soul, and I also loved all his French words he used sometimes. He really felt like an old soul trapped in such a young and beautiful body.

I would resign myself to an eternity in hell, if it meant a single lifetime with him.

I have started this book a year and a half ago. Wow! So looong ago!!! It feels like a lifetime ago... I was pregnant and anxious and thought reading would calm me, but I was not able to concentrate much so I just abandoned it. It's been too long since I could read again. My head and heart were... somewhere else. My beautiful daughter, Ais, kept me busy to say the least. I enjoyed this story and I am glad it wasn't too angsty. I'm not sure I could deal with much angst right now. It kept my interest and it was well written. It wasn't mind blowing and I'm not sure I will remember it over time, hence the rating. Hopefully I will be able to read something soon and it will blow my mind. Looking forward to reading something awesome. It's good to be back in the world of books. Oh and this one was a paperback gifted by my best friend ❤ So it was a great comeback ...more

Her writing is exquisite, as always! From the first page you get transported into this fantastic world with humans, elves, soldiers, courtesans.
We get Ōkkanȏ Kyatto - a male courtesan with an Incubus lust demon, and Sergeant Jhagán Lázhien - a human soldier.
They couldn't be more different, but they share a very special and rare bond: Sergeant Jhagán is Ōkkanȏ/Tii-Matâshi's fated soulmate.
This story starts with intense lust, even if Ōkkanȏ can't stand soldiers. But Lázhien is determined to have him anyway.
There's a lot of inner struggles, especially in Ōkkanȏ, who has to fight his demon a lot. He's insecure and afraid to be rejected. So even if he gives into temptation, he was not ready to give their bond a try.
Lázhien was a great surprise. He was tough on the outside, but an attentive lover. He was also kind, and protective. I would have wanted him to fight more for Ōkkanȏ, to speak his mind and not to just accept the situation. Even if I liked Madame Ranelle, I would have wanted Lázhien to pursue Ōkkanȏ on his own.
Overall I enjoyed the story and especially the epilogue!
