Psalm 23

1  Psalmus David. Dominus regit me, et nihil mihi deerit:
2  in loco pascuae, ibi me collocavit. Super aquam refectionis educavit me;
3  animam meam convertit. Deduxit me super semitas justitiae propter nomen suum.
4  Nam etsi ambulavero in medio umbrae mortis, non timebo mala, quoniam tu mecum es. Virga tua, et baculus tuus, ipsa me consolata sunt.
5  Parasti in conspectu meo mensam adversus eos qui tribulant me; impinguasti in oleo caput meum: et calix meus inebrians, quam praeclarus est!
6  Et misericordia tua subsequetur me omnibus diebus vitae meae; et ut inhabitem in domo Domini in longitudinem dierum.

1  The Lord is my shepherd : therefore can I lack nothing.
2  He shall feed me in a green pasture : and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.
3  He shall convert my soul : and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness, for his Name's sake.
4  Yea, thou I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil : for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me.
5  Thou shalt prepare a table before me against them that trouble me : thou hast anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full.
6  But thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life : and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

1.
My shepherd is the living Lord
nothing therefore I need:
In pastures fair, with waters calm
he sets me for to feed.

2.
He did convert and glad my soul,
and brought my mind in frame:
To walk in paths of righteousness,
For his most holy name.

3.
Yea though I walk in vale of death
yea I will fear none ill:
The rod, thy staff doth comfort me,
and thou art with me still.

4.
And in the presence of my foes,
my table thou shalt spread:
Thou shalt O Lord fill full my cup
and eke anoint my head.

5.
Through all my life thy favour is,
so frankly showed to me:
That in thy house for ever more
my dwelling place shall be.

The Lord himself, the mighty Lord,
Vouchsafes to be my guide;
The shepherd, by whose constant care
My wants are all supplied.

In tender grass he makes me feed,
And gently there repose;
Then leads me to cool shades, and where
Refreshing water flows.

He does my wand'ring soul reclaim,
And, to his endless praise,
Instruct with humble zeal to walk
In his most righteous ways.

I pass the gloomy vale of death,
From fear and danger free;
For there his aiding rod and staff
Defend and comfort me.

In presence of my spiteful foes
He does my table spread,
He crowns my cup with cheerful wine,
With oil anoints my head.

Since God does thus his wondrous love
Through all my life extend,
That life to him I will devote,
And in his temple spend.

I. The Lord my pasture shall prepare,
And feed me with a Shepherd's care :
His presence shall my wants supply,
And guard me with a watchful eye;
My noon-day walks he shall attend,
And all my midnight hours defend.

2. When in the sultry glebe I faint.
Or on the thirsty mountain pant;
To fertile vales and dewy meads
My weary wandering steps he leads;
Where peaceful rivers soft and slow.
Amid the verdant landskip flow.

3. Though in the paths of death I tread.
With gloomy horrors over-spread;
My steadfast heart shall fear no ill,
For thou, O Lord, art with me still;
Thy friendly crook shall give me aid.
And guide me through the dreadful shade.

4. Though in a bare and rugged way.
Through devious lonely wilds I stray.
Thy bounty shall my pains beguile:
The barren wilderness shall smile
With sudden greens and herbage crowned,
And streams shall murmur all around.

VERSION I (L.M.)
My Shepherd is the living Lord;
Now shall my wants be well supplied;
His providence and holy word
Become my safety and my guide.

In pastures where salvation grows
He makes me feed, he makes me rest;
There living water gently flows,
And all the food's divinely blest.

My wandering feet his ways mistake,
But he restores my soul to peace,
And leads me, for his mercy's sake,
In the fair paths of righteousness.

Though I walk through the gloomy vale
Where death and all its terrors are,
My heart and hope shall never fail,
For God my Shepherd's with me there.

Amidst the darkness and the deeps
Thou art my comfort, thou my stay;
Thy staff supports my feeble steps,
Thy rod directs my doubtful way.

The sons of earth, and sons of hell,
Gaze at thy goodness, and repine
To see my table spread so well
With living bread and cheerful wine.

How I rejoice when on my head
Thy Spirit condescends to rest!
'Tis a divine anointing, shed
Like oil of gladness at a feast.

Surely the mercies of the Lord
Attend his household all their days;
There will I dwell to hear his word,
To seek his face, and sing his praise.

VERSION II (C.M.D.)
My shepherd will supply my need,
Jehovah is his name;
In pastures fresh he makes me feed,
Beside the living stream.

He brings my wandering spirit back
When I forsake his ways;
And leads me, for his mercy's sake,
In paths of truth and grace.

When I walk through the shades of death,
Thy presence is my stay;
A word of thy supporting breath
Drives all my fears away.

Thy hand, in sight of all my foes,
Doth still my table spread,
My cup with blessings overflows,
Thine oil anoints my head.

The sure provisions of my God
Attend me all my days:
O may thy house be mine abode,
And all my work be praise!

There would I find a settled rest,
While others go and come;
No more a stranger or a guest,
But like a child at home.

VERSION III (S.M.)
The Lord my Shepherd is,
I shall be well supplied.
Since He is mine and I am His,
What can I want beside?

He leads me to the place
Where heav'nly pasture grows,
Where living waters gently pass
And full salvation flows.

If e'er I go astray,
He doth my soul reclaim
And guides me in His own right way
For His most holy name.

While He affords His aid,
I cannot yield to fear;
Though I should walk through death's dark shade,
My Shepherd's with me there.

In spite of all my foes
Thou dost my table spread;
My cup with blessings overflows,
And joy exalts my head.

The bounties of Thy love
Shall crown my following days,
Nor from Thy house will I remove
Nor cease to speak Thy praise.

My Shepherd's mighty aid,
His dear redeeming love,
His all-protecting pow'r display'd,
I joy to prove:
Led onward by my guide,
I view the verdant scene,
Where limpid waters gently glide
Through pastures green.

In error's maze my soul
Shall wander now no more;
His spirit shall, with sweet control,
The lost restore;
My willing steps shall lead
In paths of righteousness;
His power defend; his bounty feed;
His mercy bless.

Affliction's deepest gloom
Shall but thy love display;
Thou wilt the vale of death illume
With living ray;
My failing flesh thy rod
Shall thankfully adore;
My heart shall vindicate my God
For evermore.

Thy hands an unction shed,
Whose balmy sweets abound;
It honours my devoted head,
With gladness crown'd.
While hid from ev'ry ill,
From each infernal foe,
My cup ten thousand comforts fill,
And overflow.

Thy goodness, ever nigh,
Thy mercy, ever free,
Shall while I live, shall when I die,
Still follow me;
Forever shall my soul
Thy boundless blessing prove;
And while eternal ages roll,
Adore and love.

Der Herr ist mein getreuer Hirt,
Dem ich mich ganz vertraue;
Zur Weid er mich, sein Schäflein führt
Auf schöner grüner Aue.
Zum frischen Wasser leit er mich,
Mein Seel zu laben kräftiglich
Durchs selig Wort der Gnaden.

Er führet mich auf rechter Bahn
Von seines Namens wegen;
Obgleich viel Trübsal geht heran
Aufs Todes finstern Stegen,
So grauet mir doch nichts dafür,
Mein treuer Hirt ist stets bei mir,
Sein Steck und Stab mich tröstet.

Ein köstlichn Tisch er mir bereit,
Sollts auch den Feind verdrießen;
Schenkt mir voll ein, das Öl der Freud
Über mein Haupt tut fließen.
Sein Güte und Barmherzigkeit
Werden mir folgen alle Zeit;
In seinem Haus ich bleibe.

Az Úr igazgat engem, és semmi hiával nem leszek;
a legelés helyére fektetett engem; a megújúlás vize mellett nevelt engem;
lelkemet megtérítette, az igazság ösvényein hordozott engem az ő nevéért.
Mert ha a halálárnyéka közepett járok is, nem félek roszaktól: mivel te velem vagy. A te vessződ és botod, azok vigasztaltak engem.
Asztalt készítettél előttem azok ellen, kik engem szorongatnak. Megkented olajjal fejemet; és az én kedvetadó poharam mely jeles!
És a te irgalmasságod követ engem életem teljes napjaiban;
hogy az Úr házában lakjam hosszú ideig.

The Lord's my Shepherd, I’ll not want.
He makes me down to lie
In pastures green; He leadeth me
The quiet waters by.

My soul He doth restore again;
And me to walk doth make
Within the paths of righteousness,
Even for His own Name's sake.

Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale,
Yet will I fear no ill;
For Thou art with me; and Thy rod
And staff my comfort still.

My table Thou hast furnishèd
In presence of my foes;
My head Thou dost with oil anoint,
And my cup overflows.

Goodness and mercy all my life
Shall surely follow me;
And in God's house for evermore
My dwelling place shall be.
