Story Mode: The Destined Rivals is a roguelite game mode for one or two players in Kirby Fighters 2 which pits Kirby and a buddy of his choosing against King Dedede and Meta Knight, who have teamed up into a duo and headed to the Summit of the Buddy Fighters Tower in order to finally defeat Kirby in combat. The game mode consists of five levels (referred to as Chapters) inter-cut with narration as Kirby and his buddy make their way up the tower past numerous foes. As they ascend and defeat their opponents, the player has an opportunity to select Story Items to power the team up in various ways or heal them. In addition to regular opponents, Kirby and his buddy also battle bosses in a similar manner to traditional Kirby boss fights.
Story[edit]
“ | King Dedede and Meta Knight... Many times before have they stood in Kirby's path, even allying with one another on occasion.
Now, to finally defeat Kirby, the old rivals have become partners, taking on Kirby as a battle team! And so they sent Kirby a challenge. |
” | — Opening narration from the story mode in Kirby Fighters 2 |
In order to defeat Kirby, King Dedede and Meta Knight have decided to partner up and fight as a team. They send Kirby an invitation to come face them at the top of the Buddy Fighters Tower. Despite Kirby's inability to read the invitation, he grabs a buddy (of the player's choosing) and heads to the tower to start climbing. After defeating several foes and toppling first Twin Woods in Chapter 1, then Waddle Dees disguised as his rivals in Chapter 2, Kirby and his buddy finally confront King Dedede & Meta Knight in Chapter 3. The first fight begins to turn in Kirby's favor, so King Dedede and Meta Knight flee higher up the tower. Once Kirby and his buddy reach the Summit, they fight their rivals a second time and finally defeat them. Kirby and his buddy believe themselves to have won, but as they head away from the tower, they see that it mysteriously grows even taller, and know that they must head back to the top to defeat the rivals once again. Once they reach the top of the heightened tower, they battle King Dedede and Meta Knight one last time, who attempt to use an artifact of sinister power to make themselves stronger. Despite this augmentation, Kirby and his buddy defeat the two one last time and send them packing using the Buddy Star Blaster, disabling the artifact in the process.
Gameplay[edit]
In Story Mode: The Destined Rivals, the objective is to fight through a series of battles against CPU opponents with a buddy who is controlled either by a second player or the CPU. Kirby and his buddy may be put up against one or two opponents at varying levels of strength based on the chapter being played and the distance climbed up the tower. Battles are played in much the same fashion as standard fights, but damage values, health, and other factors of both allies and enemies is determined by Story Items collected along the way. In-between each battle, Kirby and his buddy will automatically heal by at least 20 HP (30 in the Final Chapter), which can be augmented by certain Story Items. From there, three (or more) Story Items are made available at random to choose from, the bonuses of which will last until the end of the chapter. The primary goal of this mode is to earn as many points as possible along the way by playing well and choosing helpful story items. If Kirby and his buddy are defeated at any point, the only penalty in the first four chapters is a loss of some points and having to start the round again. In the Final Chapter, however, Kirby and his buddy will lose and have to start over from the beginning of the chapter if they fail three times in battles.
What Kirby and his buddy encounter on each floor is somewhat predetermined (particularly for boss floors), but there is a good deal of randomness at play. Details on what can be expected on each floor can be found in the Floor breakdown table below.

Meter notes[edit]
For the Attack, Ghost, Quick-Charge, and Recovery stones, the amount they add to their respective meters remains consistent, with small variations from the values listed above being found, but since meters have different capacities in different chapters, they will have overall less effect in later chapters than in earlier ones. The following shows what the meters max fill is in each Chapter:
- Chapter 1: 300 points
- Chapter 2: 500 points
- Chapter 3: 550 points
- Chapter 4: 750 points
- Final Chapter: 999 points
This Twitter post retrieves data from the game's internal files regarding the effect each stone has. It is still not entirely clear what the numbers for the aforementioned stones refer to specifically, but they seem to be the reason why the added values may vary for most stones. In addition, this code references two types of stone (Shield Health and Knockback) which go unused in the final game.
Stages[edit]
The following stages have a chance to be randomly chosen on most floors of the Buddy Fighters Tower starting in chapter 2:
