“ | Gather ore and toss it into the containers! | ” | — Collection Lists description of Ore Express. |
Ore Express is one of the ten battle types in Kirby Battle Royale. Contestants are tasked with chasing a train through a dynamic area, and tossing pieces of ore into its cargo as it moves.
Rules and gameplay[edit]
“ | There's a battle in a mine full of shiny rocks. I LOVE SHINY ROCKS! | ” | — Waddle Dee in Kirby Battle Royale |
The game takes place out along a path next to a train track. As the train moves, the screen will scroll along with it, revealing more of the path. Along the way, several pieces of green crystal ores can be found on the ground, which the contestants will fight over. Contestants have to pick up these ores, in stacks if they can, and toss them into the train's cargo holds as they open. As the train is constantly moving, the contestants will have to scramble over all manner of terrain and hazards to keep up with it. There are also rare golden ore pieces which are worth 5 points each. At the end of the path, the contestant (or team) who deposited the most ore is the winner. Scores for Ore Express can be as low as 0 to as high as 99 points.
There are some areas in stages where the train can come careening into the area of play. It will destroy any ore chunks it runs over, and instantly KO any contestants it hits. Sometimes the train will have a special cart open. Ores tossed in this cart are worth double the usual points.
There are two checkpoints along the way in each stage, where the contestants will be given their current score. It is not displayed to them during the rest of the round.
Like most other battle modes, contestants have health, and if KO'd will be removed from the playing field for a short time. Contestants can also be KO'd if they are caught between an obstacle and the scrolling screen.
Stages[edit]
There are three stages for Ore Express. They are as follows:
Stages in Ore Express | |||
---|---|---|---|
Name | Intro | Gameplay | Description |
Wayward Plains | ![]() |

The path is relatively straightforward, though it moves upward after the first checkpoint. Along the way are fences, many of which can be broken. |
Twisty Tunnels | ![]() |

As the name implies, this path is underground. It is lined with spikes in places, and also has UFOs carrying ore. |
Logjam Pass | ![]() |

UFOs appear at the beginning of this stage, carrying ore on the train tracks. The path itself is very sparse, giving ample opportunity for the train to hit the contestants.
In the Cake Royale, this stage is used only for the Gold League Qualifier Battle. |

In the Kirby novel series[edit]
In the Kirby novel series, a match of Ore Express takes place in Kirby's Decisive Battle! Battle Royale!!.
During Dedede's Cake Royale, Kirby and Waddle Dee face against a Whip and a Hammer Kirby copies in a match of Ore Express. As Kirby tries to grab the pieces of ore, Whip Kirby snatches them with his whip from the distance. When the train comes, Whip Kirby throws all the pieces on its containers, taking the lead. Kirby tries to stop him, but Hammer Kirby stands in his way and sends him flying with his attack. After the train leaves, Waddle Dee tells Kirby to distract Whip Kirby. While Kirby and Whip Kirby fight, Waddle Dee grabs the ore faster than Hammer Kirby. When the train comes once again, Hammer Kirby tries to stop Waddle Dee from putting all the ore in the train. Since Waddle Dee, with ore in his hands, is too slow to escape, Hammer Kirby hits him. Fortunately, the ore acted as a shield for Waddle Dee, who jumps on the train and puts all the ore inside. For the match point, Kirby and Waddle Dee continue with their plan, successfully taking the lead. When the train comes, Whip and Hammer Kirby jump on it, mysteriously leaving the arena as Kirby and Waddle Dee win.
Later in the story, it is revealed by Tron that the tracks of the Ore Express were constructed to spread the Kirby copies all over Dream Land, so they will eat all its food.
Trivia[edit]
- No more than 20 pieces of Ore can be on screen at any given time. As such, if contestants are holding 20 pieces, no additional ore will appear.
