“
The dead, in the pit, they're -- they're escaping. Someone -- Someone's letting them out. You can't touch them. You can't even go near them.
―Arno reveals the danger to Luciana and Wes.[src]
”

The crater, also called the Pit by the Stalkers, is a location that appears in Season 7 of AMC's Fear the Walking Dead. It is a nuclear blast crater filled with countless radioactive walkers located somewhere in Texas five miles west of Manny's Salvage Yard and relatively close to the Franklin Hotel.

Pre-Apocalypse[]

Nothing is known about this location before the outbreak.

Post-Apocalypse[]

This location suffered a direct hit from one of Teddy's nuclear warheads, killing anyone close by and creating a massive blast crater in its place. Over the course of the following months, countless walkers fell in and became trapped, stewing in the intense radiation left over from the blast and becoming incredibly dangerous to anyone that came across them.

Season 7[]

"Follow Me"[]

While traveling along the road, Arno and Sage come across the walker-filled crater. The two men are left horrified by the discovery and when Sage asks how many walkers there are, Arno states that there are too many and that if even just one of them got out "none of us are going anywhere." The discovery renews Arno's determination to take Strand's Tower for the Stalkers.

"Mourning Cloak"[]

A group of Stalkers question Ali about why Victor Strand keeps sending people to the crater, but he doesn't know.

"Ofelia"[]

Arno mentions a grave threat to Daniel, Luciana and Wes, although he doesn't elaborate. Sage later explains that the undead are gathering in one of the blast craters and have gotten stuck there and are more dangerous now. However, Sage doesn't know why Arno is so scared of them.

During this time, Sabrina uses a boat hook to put down a radioactive walker which is stated to be the third one that day.

After Arno is fatally mauled, Luciana attempts to get answers from him. Arno eventually reveals that someone is letting the dead out of the crater and that they're so dangerous that you can't even go near them.

"The Raft"[]

With the Tower's walker moat chasing him, Morgan decides to dump them in the crater with the help of Alicia. However, the two find the crater to be virtually empty aside from a few walkers, somebody having lowered a ramp into the crater that has allowed most of the radioactive walkers inside to escape.

Deaths[]

  • Numerous counts of unnamed people

Trivia[]

  • Although unconfirmed, this may be the origin of the radioactive walkers from "Six Hours" as Bea tells Morgan that "they're from the crater." However, it may have also been another blast crater from the nukes as at least 8 warheads went off.
  • This is the only blast crater seen in the series from the nuking of Texas, but there's at least 7 more located elsewhere.
  • It's unclear exactly where the crater is located. However, it is only five miles from Manny's Salvage Yard and relatively close to the Franklin Hotel.
    • This means that the blast that had created this crater is the same one that had destroyed the hotel.
  • Although unconfirmed, Victor Strand and his rangers appear to have been the ones to let the dead out of the crater as Strand has his men lead the walkers to his tower in "Divine Providence".
