Jackie Owen is a fictional character and supporting antagonist of the British soap opera EastEnders. She appeared as a major antagonist from 1999 to 2000 before serving as a overarching character in 2001-2002 and then in 2018-2019 respectively.

In her characterization, Jackie is the sister of main antagonist Steve Owen and the eldest child of their parents Richard and Barbara altogether. She started out as a waitress who conspiratorially helped Steve avoid going to prison for killing his ex-girlfriend Saskia Duncan, thus being partially accountable for letting her brother's former employee Matthew Rose end up getting sent down instead after Steve framed him for the crime.

Thereafter Jackie became involved in a relationship storyline with established character Gianni Di Marco, whom she soon physically abused for a while before it eventually transpired that she has a Premenstrual Tension. Nevertheless, her violence towards Gianni continued up until they eventually broke up and she subsequently departed the square in order to help Steve overcome his drug addiction.

The character was portrayed by Race Davies.

Biography[]

Jackie Owen first came to Albert Square in Walford, a fictional borough in East London, in September 1999.

It quickly emerged that she was the sister of Steve Owen, an infamous nightclub owner who is currently in prison awaiting trial for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Saskia Duncan. Months earlier on Valentine's Day 1999, Steve was celebrating the opening of his E20 nightclub when Saskia confronted him over how their broken relationship involved her getting an abortion; they ended up having a fight that culiminated with Steve killing Saskia in self-defense. The follow-up of Saskia's murder saw Steve forcing his former employee Matthew Rose, who had witnessed the incident, to cover up the crime before going on to implicate him as Saskia's killer after her death became public knowledge; upon hearing that her brother was somewhat involved in the crime, Jackie came to Walford to visit Steve and help him overcome the situation.

As time went on, it became clear that Jackie believed that Steve was innocent and that Matthew was guilty. She soon testified against Matthew for her brother, but later discovered the truth about Steve being the killer. Nevertheless Jackie continued to collaborate with Steve's plan and this worked successfully as Steve was acquitted for Saskia's murder, whereas Matthew was found guilty and sent to prison for the crime instead.

Following Saskia's murder trial, Jackie faced amniosity in the square alongside Steve over how they got Matthew wrongfully jailed for the crime. This led to the pair being resented by Matthew's girlfriend, Teresa Di Marco, along with his closest friends Jamie Mitchell and Robbie Jackson. As such Matthew's other friend, Martin Fowler, also resented Jackie for what she did and began hassling her. Jackie eventually banned him from the restaurant where she worked as a waitress, after which Martin broke into the place and vandalized it in retribution. Later on, though, Jackie joined the campaign to get Matthew released from prison. Soon afterwards, Jackie comforted Steve after Matthew took revenge against her brother for getting him sent to prison. After Matthew departs the square, Steve begins to develop a drug addiction in order to cope with the aftermath; this in turn causes him to grow distant from his sister.

It was then Jackie began a relationship with Teresa's brother Gianni after the pair fell in love with each other. However, the couple later got into an argument that ended with Jackie hitting Gianni. This soon grew frequent until it appeared to end when Jackie makes a revelation to Gianni; that she suffers with severe Premenstrual Tension (PMS) for a week on a regular monthly basis, which makes her enraged and violent. Gianni decides to support Jackie, especially when she later discloses that she and Steve became who they were after their mother Barbara had neglected and mistreated them - including at the time when the siblings' late father, Richard, was still alive.

The couple's relationship soon broke down as Jackie, despite getting medical help at one stage, continued to physically abuse Gianni and take her violent furstrations out on him for a while now. As such, Gianni grew distant from Jackie and he even rejected her when she witnessed his confronation with Steve's love rival Dan Sullivan over the latter seducing Teresa. Eventually she decided to break up with Gianni and left the square to help Steve overcome his drug addiction.

In 2002, Jackie is mentioned following's Steve death in his death in a high-speed car chase with archenemy Phil Mitchell. The follow-up of Steve's funeral saw his crimes coming to light, including money laundering and drug trafficking that both his wife Mel Healy as well as Jackie herself were falsely held accountable for after Steve implicated them for his illicit activities.
