Franny Slater is a supporting antagonist in Coronation Street, appearing in 1972.

He was portrayed by the late Michael Angelis, who voiced Diesel as the narrator of Thomas and Friends.

Biography[]

Franny Slater was a regular at the Flying Horse. He had a proprietorial attitude towards barmaid Sharon Duffy and was unhappy that she was dating Ray Langton. When a group of Rovers Return regulars visited the Flying Horse for a "pub olympics", Franny recognised Jacko Ford among them, knowing that he'd spent time in prison. He told Sharon that the difference between him and Jacko was that he'd never been caught.

Later on Sharon boasted to him about the posh flat Ray lived in. However, Franny knew that the flat she was describing belonged to bookmaker Benny Lewis and that Ray only had a key to it because he was doing building work there. After telling Sharon she'd been deceived, Franny convinced her to borrow the key off Ray in order to cook him a meal there. Franny then took a copy of the key, planning to burgle the flat. Sharon wanted to frame Ray but Franny thought Jacko would make a better scapegoat: He knew Jacko had been telling people he had no money, so if he suddenly had some, he would look suspicious.

Soon enough Franny convinced Sharon to get Ray to show her round the flat and get full information on the security systems. He then hired Freddie Slack to help set up Jacko. Freddie drove Jacko to a remote spot and asked him to help out with a job. When Jacko refused, Freddie gave him £30 for his troubles, then left him to walk home from the middle of nowhere so he'd have no alibi. At the same time, Franny let himself into the flat with the key and disabled the alarm, stealing £5000 from Benny's safe.

It was then Franny spent £500 buying a new sports car, gave £500 to Freddie and £1000 to Sharon, then headed off for London with the remaining £3000. Although Jacko was eventually cleared, it is unclear whether the police ever caught up with Franny.
