Forger, that bastard! Now he's even going after the girl I've had my dear eye on, my dear Fiona! Not this time, Forger! You'll be a pariah in this hospital once I'm through you!
~ Gorey's jealousy towards Loid

Gerald Gorey, also known as Director Gorey is a minor antagonist in the Spy × Family series, being the main antagonist of Mission 67 of the Friendship Schemes Arc.

He is the the Chief Medical Director of the Berlint General Hospital where Twilight works at, as Loid Forger. He possesses an immense jealousy towards Loid due to his popularity as a therapist within the hospital and his proximity with Fiona Frost, who Gorey has a crush on. Because of this, Gorey goes above and beyond in order to sabotage his public image in the clinic, which eventually culminates in him reporting Loid to the SSS as a spy.

Appearance[]

Gerald is an old-looking man with gray hair and beard with brown eyes. He wears a standard white coat.

Personality[]

Gorey is a short-tempered man who values status above everything else and thus, despises Loid due to his popularity with the doctors and patients alike. Gorey also has a crush on Fiona Frost, and thinks that she's might be having an affair with Loid, making him also his love rival in his eyes.

Because of this, Gorey is shown to do just about anything in order to ruin Loid's public image, going from petty attacks such as putting laxatives in his coffee to more serious life-ruining allegations, such as reporting him to the authorities accusing him of being a spy. Behind the scenes, Gorey has also done some offenses that put him on the hospital surveillance list. Behind all of this, Gorey is actually a coward, freaking out and begging for mercy as soon as the situation turns against him.

Biography[]

Gorey makes his debut in Mission 67, where he's first seen spying on Loid from behind, seething with jealousy, and is noticed by Fiona while on her way to Loid's office. While talking to the spy about a potential investigation regarding Melinda Desmond, Fiona states that Loid would probably not be able to access them due to the fact that Director Gorey is seemingly refusing to assign him any patients out of personal spite. Loid then recalls that he has tried all kinds of nice advances towards him in order to gain his sympathy, but it was ultimately fruitless. Fiona then says that striking a deal with him is their only hope to advance Operation Strix, before leaving.

After seeing Fiona walking out of Doctor Forger's office, Gorey starts to think that Loid might be having an affair with her. Now with even more jealousy than before, Gorey beging his crusade of sabotaging Loid's public image in the hospital. His first attempt is to change the time of a reunion on Loid's whiteboard in order to make him arrive late, thinking that he would be shamed by his peers for it. Instead, the doctors excuse Loid's delay and even say that he should take more days off. His second attempt is to put laxatives in Loid's coffee in order to publicly humiliate him. The effect, once again, is the opposite, as the coworkers do not mind his clumsiness. His third attempt consisted of him faking a letter to Fiona with a date proposal in order to expose Loid as a cheating husband and potentially get together with her in the future. The plan does not work, as Fiona quickly recognizes the handwriting as not Loid's.

Furious, Gorey tries one last attempt against Loid, reporting him to the SSS as a spy and planting fake evidence in his office. Luckily, his call is intercepted by Franky Franklin, who arrives at the hospital alongside Fiona, both of them disguised as SSS agents. Once there, Gorey makes up a story of how he caught Loid rummaging through the records room during the night and collecting intel from them. He then leads the two agents to the fake evidence he planted on Loid's office, which was a file containing personal information from various patients. Franky then cuffs Loid and simulates his arrest while he pretends to be shocked for being falsely accused. Fiona reveals Gorey's hiding spot and also his identity as the accuser, to which Gorey makes the excuse that the reason for that is because he thought that his rising popularity was due to spy persuasion techniques. Loid, still acting coy, notes that the fiiles weren't typed by him, identifying the font as the one from Gorey's typewriter, turning the situation against him.

Cornered, Gorey tries to make excuses, but Franky starts spouting out his criminal record in the hospital that put him in surveillance list, gathered with Loid's intel, listing offenses such as his habit of falsifying medical reimbursement requests, improperly accepting donations, going on joyrides with his friend's luxury car, posing as the hospital's CEO in order to get girls and eating all donuts from the break room and then putting the blame on a chubby coworker. Franky and Fiona both start to simulate Gorey's arrest, leaving him terrified, until Loid breaks in and tries to "save him" saying he's a vital part of the team and a great leader. Following all according to plan, Franky lets him go and leaves the hospital. After all the events, Gorey is absolutely thankful to Loid for saving his life and calls him a good man.

Trivia[]

  • Despite not being too much of a national threat like other antagonists in the series, Gorey is arguabily among the characters who came the closest to uncovering Loid Forger's identity as Twilight. Had his call not have been conveniently intercepted by Franky, the SSS would most likely be reached and start an investigation that would probably lead to them finding out about Loid's real identity as a spy and, subsequently, his arrest.
  • In Episode 20 of the first season, during Anya's visit at the Berlint General Hospital, a shadow of someone spying Loid from afar can be briefly seen cast in a door frame in the corner of the screen before vanishing. Although it could have been Fiona's, as she would be introduced in that same episode, there's a possibility that it could have actually been Gorey instead, given his first appearance in the manga was spying on Loid from a door frame. If this is true, then this would mark his first ever appearance in the anime series.
    • Eventually, Gorey makes his official first appearance in the anime as a small cameo on Episode 36 of the second season, where he appears behind a doorframe, stalking Fiona Frost.
