History[]
Verona Dempsey is a clothing importer native to Wisconsin, United States of America settled on the same town where Fred Jones' uncle Karl lives. At some point in her life, Verona started a clothing line of hermetic clothes which became a success. However, worried of being driven out of business by competitors, Verona decided to disguise herself as the ghost of the late Lighthouse Keeper to use the lighthouse to scare away any boats from her competition to ensure only the boats carrying her goods could reach the port and let her profit, threatening several businesses. To do so, Verona had to help Crusty McPete in his scheme to locate the lost sunken treasure of the Dauntless.
In the Season 3 episode "Fright House of a Lighthouse", sometime after the Creepy Kreeper causes a ship to crash and evacuate one stormy night, Mystery Inc. visits Michigan to stay at the house of Fred's uncle Karl, who tells them the story of the Lighthouse Keeper after Shaggy Rogers and Scooby-Doo return scared from an encounter the Creepy Keeper when they come to the lighthouse to ask him to turn off the light. When Mystery Inc. goes to the lighthouse to investigate, they encounter Verona on the way. She shows off her mystery equipment, takes a photo of a mysterious van (actually belonging to an association of storm chasers not related to the mystery) embarasses Velma and even gifts Daphne with one of her hermetic pajamas. She then attacks the gang disguised as the Creepy Keeper, taking Daphne to the last floor and nearly letting her fall to her death. She tries to attack Fred and Velma, but Shaggy and Scooby turn off the lights, leading the Keeper to vanish.
The following day, Verona meets Mystery Inc. again while investigating as Crusty McPeet's warehouse, mocking Velma again for her lack of progress while examining a mechanical piece and declining Fred's invitation to join them by saying that she is about to wrap up the case, cementing Velma's dislike for her. That night, as Shaggy and Scooby are forced to go into the lighthouse to turn on the light and save Fred, Daphne and Velma from crashing against the rocks aboard the fake Dauntless built by McPeet to search the treasure, the Creepy Keeper surprises them, so they incapaticate her with barrels after Scooby distracts her dressing as a mermaid and use the fog horn to guide their friends before escaping from the Creepy Keeper again. Verona then reaches them at the port and catches a fleeing Crusty McPeet with a net before exposing him as the one behind the skeleton crew of the fake Dauntless, seemingly solving the case much to Velma's chagrin.
However, as they eat cheese for dinner, Velma comes to the conclusion that the case isn't solved yet and tells her friends to go back to the lighthouse and set up a trap for the Creepy Keeper, with Fred sending Shaggy and Scooby to provoke the Keeper into coming out of the lighthouse. The Creepy Keeper chases Shaggy and Scooby, but the trap fails, leading to a chase that has the former two being followed by the latter in quad bikes until the Keeper crashes against a "No Dogs Allowed" sign. She then chases all of Mystery Inc. to the docks and then back into the lighthouse. Once at the last floor, the Creepy Keeper takes Scooby by the tail, but Fred catches her with a rope and then Shaggy accidentaly incapacitates her by turning on the light, leading her to fall off through the trapdoor and get suspended by the rope. Now trapped, the Creepy Keeper is unmasked by Velma as Verona and exposes her motives. Verona still insists that she knew about the storm chases, pleading the gang to admit she knew, but Velma tells her that she is still the best meddler in town, much to Verona's chagrin. She is likely arrested later on while the town's businesses thrive again to recover from the damage she did.
Trivia[]
- It's possible that Verona Dempsey may be homosexual or bisexual, as when she dons the costume of the Lighthouse Keeper's ghost, she falls for Scooby-Doo when he crossdresses as a mermaid to distract her momentarily, though the attraction ends once she realizes Scooby's ruse. If this was the intention, this may have been a reference to the theory that Velma Dinkley, her rival, is part of the LGBT community.
- Alternatively, Verona may have seen through Scooby's diguise and just feigned feeling attracted to him to make it look like the ghost or whoever impersonated the ghost was a male to avoid anyone from suspecting her.
- In the Italian dub of What's New, Scooby-Doo?, Verona Dempsey was named "Veronica" instead.
