“ Breathe...easy, easy... You remember this one, right? Shame the government didn't approve, there' a lotta applications for inducing short-term paralysis. Ah, Tony... When I, uh, ordered the hit on you, I was worried I might've been killing the golden goose. But it was just FATE that you soldiered through it, and marched your way outta that cave alive. Because ya had one last golden egg to give. You really think that just because you HAVE an idea, it BELONGS to you? Your father, he helped give us the atomic bomb. Now what sorta world would it be today if he'd been as selfish as you? Oh, it's beautiful. Tony, THIS is your Ninth Symphony. What a masterpiece, look at it. This's your legacy. The next generation of Stark weaponry, with THIS at it's heart. Weapons that'll help steer the balance of power back in OUR hands. The RIGHT hands. I wish you could see my prototype. It's not as...well, not as conservative as yours. Too bad you had to involve Pepper in this. Would've preferred she lived. „
~ Stane to Tony Stark as he paralyzes and rips the Arc Reactor out of his chest compartment.
“ For thirty years, I've been holding you up! I built this company from NOTHING! And now, nothing is gonna stand in my way! Least of all... you! „
~ Iron Monger to Iron Man.
“ How ironic, Tony! Trying to rid the world of weapons... you gave it its best one ever! And now, I'm going to kill you with it! „
~ Obadiah Stane to Tony Stark.

Obadiah Stane, better known as Iron Monger, is the opening antagonist of the Infinity Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He serves as the main antagonist of Iron Man and a posthumous antagonist in Spider-Man: Far From Home. A version of him also appears as a minor antagonist of "What If... Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?", the sixth episode of the Marvel animated anthology series What If...?.

He is an old friend of Howard Stark, who helped him found Stark Industries, taking over the company following his death in a car accident (revealed to be an assassination by HYDRA) until his son, Tony, was ready to inherit the company. Stane grew jealous when Tony brought the company to greater heights than he could even imagine, so he hires a hit on him and in his absence, profits from causing 100's of deaths by selling weapons to terrorists.

He was portrayed by Jeff Bridges.

His Evil Ranking[]

His Villainous Deeds[]

  • As revealed in What If... The Red Guardian Stopped the Winter Soldier?, he sold out Stark Industries to Hydra in exchange for the Winter Soldier killing Tony's parents.
  • He ordered a hit on Tony so he can be killed, which caused an entire convoy of young Americans to die in the attack, which heavily traumatized Tony and nearly killed him due to the shrapnel in his heart.
    • His reasons for doing so are pure jealousy due to how he has to be second-in-command instead of leading Stark Industries himself. That said, his motivation is a petty and selfish one.
    • His only "regret" about ordering the hit is fear that he's killing the "golden goose".
  • He made a profit by secretly selling multiple weapons to multiple dangerous terrorists, despite knowing they will use these weapons to kill hundreds of people.
  • He had Tony kicked out of his position in order to continue making a profit by illegal means, using Tony's decision not to make deadly weapons anymore as an excuse to do so.
  • He betrayed the Ten Rings to take the Mark I prototype of the Iron Man suit by torturing Raza by using a sonic taser to paralyze him before having the other terrorists (which are about twenty to thirty people) captured and executed by his bodyguards to cover up his tracks.
  • While not outright abusive to his employees, he had no problem yelling at William Riva that "Tony was able to build his suit in a cave with a box of scraps" when he tries to say it's impossible to replicate the arc reactor.
    • This means he is partially responsible for Riva becoming a member of Mysterio's crew, which would also make him play a part in causing the Elementals to attack Europe (via William Riva's drones), the psychological torture that Peter Parker had to endure after Tony's sacrifice to defeat Thanos and the Black Order, exposing Spiderman as Peter Parker across the whole world, and eventually leading to entire Multiverse forgetting who the Spiderman of this universe was, thus leaving Peter Parker alone and without anyone.
  • He paralyzed Tony using the Sonic taser while removing his miniature Arc reactor, the only thing keeping him alive by preventing the shrapnel inside him from stabbing his heart, to power his prototype of the Iron Man suit, while taunting him about it and announcing he will kill Pepper to spite him and that it will be his fault before leaving him to die slowly.
  • After donning the Iron Monger armor, he killed many SHIELD agents who stood in his way, before preparing to kill Pepper.
  • During his battle with Iron Man, he willingly endangered the lives of multiple bystanders if it can help in killing Stark, such as using a car filled with a mother and her four small children to crush Iron Man to death and in turn, them also, knocking of a biker off when he was moving to use his bike to hit Tony, or tossing Tony to a bus filled with civilians trying to flee the scene before blowing it up.
  • He taunted Tony on how he tried to rid the world of his weapons by creating his best before shooting missiles at Tony who was at the edge, about to fall into the Arc Reactor before being eventually electrocuted to death by it.

Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]

  • He fails the MCU's heinous standard, as villains with roughly similar (Red Skull, Alexander Pierce, General Dreykov, Arnim Zola) or less (Crossbones, Kilgrave, Mysterio and Erik Killmonger) resources did way worse. (It should be noted Stane is the heading figure of arguably the world's leading weapons development company that uses his power to sell weapons to terrorists, so his resources are pretty much close to theirs). In addition, Whiplash and Aldrich Killian gave him heavy competition.
  • In a deleted scene that is deemed as canon, he gives a speech to his employees about what is at stake, stating that he is trying to put the Arc Reactor technology in the right hands. This implies that while he does not care about the people in other countries, he does care about his own country.

Trivia[]

  • Iron Monger was originally considered Near Pure Evil due to how he still was heinous and should have stood out enough, However, he was removed from the wiki after it was decided that his crimes are far too standard for the MCU and while Stane might initially have been Pure Evil at least when the first Iron Man film came out that soon changed with later movies having villains all too comparable if not far worse than him.
  • Iron Monger is one of the two Villainous Benchmarks who are Pure Evil in their novelization counterparts, along with Abomination.
