- "But Thomas, you're not number one because of a number painted on your side. You're number one because I can count on you."
- ― Sir Topham Hatt comforting Thomas
Sir Bertram Topham Hatt IV is the controller of the North Western Railway.
Personality
Sir Topham Hatt is described as a character intended for comedic relief and is quite flamboyant and overdramatic, however, more times than not, Sir Topham Hatt has been shown to be more of an authority figure like the original series.

Trivia
- Sir Topham Hatt is the only human character intended to interact with the engines as opposed to the original series, where various humans would interact with the engines quite often.
- Sir Topham Hatt was originally planned to not have a British accent in the US dub like he had from the nineteenth - twenty-fourth series of the original show, but this was later changed.
- Instead of simply being called "sir", Sir Topham Hatt is generally referred to by his full name in All Engines Go.
- Additionally, he is also not referred as "The Fat Controller" in the UK dub, as the nickname is considered rude, unlike in the original series and the Railway Series.
- As revealed in the episode Sir Topham Hatt's Hat, he is one of the multiple railway-controllers that have worked on Sodor over at-least the past 75 years.
- The current Sir Topham Hatt is the fourth controller of the North Western Railway.
- Alongside running the railway, Sir Topham Hatt is also in charge of organising special events on the Island of Sodor.
- Unlike in the original series:
- Sir Topham Hatt lives at Vicarstown rather than Wellsworth.
- Despite still being the owner of the railway, Gordon is shown to be the one organising the daily jobs on Sodor and takes on the role as the father figure of the smaller engines.
- Unlike the original series and the Railway Series, Sir Topham Hatt does not appear to be married or have grandchildren.
- According to the book Meet the Engines, his real name is Bertram. This first name came from episodes from the thirteenth to fifteenth series of the original Thomas & Friends where he is referred to as "Bertram" by Allicia Botti and Dowager Hatt, even though his first name was actually Topham according to the 2013 Character Bible.
- Despite this not being his real name in the original Thomas & Friends, his real name is still revealed to be Bertram in the book.
