- ―Lando Calrissian, to a 2-1B
The 2-1B surgical droid also known as the 2-1B-series medical droid[19] or the 2-1B medical droid, were a model of medical droid that was common throughout the galaxy.
Characteristics[]
- "Can I be of assistance?"
"No thanks. Just get in the back and take care of the clones."

2-1B surgical droids had modular limbs for all situations.
The nomenclature of the 2-1B-series—the digit two, followed by another digit, and then a letter[20]—was also seen on the 2-0A medicial droid active in the High Republic Era.[21] Humanoid in appearance, all 2-1B series droids were equipped with encyclopedic memory banks. Their memory banks and modular limbs helped ensure that the droids gave the best course of medical treatment in any given medical situation. The droids also had stabilizing feet, hydraulic legs, vocabulators, hydraulics covered by a transparent shell, and some even had hypodermic injectors.[3]
2-1B droids boasted remarkable joint articulation coupled with their precision-crafted servogrip pincers, which could be replaced with multiple attachments to suit various requirements. The droids could be upgraded to specialize in neurosurgery, alien biology, cybernetic limb replacement, pediatrics, and podiatry.[20] Though they were designed to treat humans,[22] they were able to treat the diseases and injuries of millions of different species[23] using stored data.[24] They often worked alongside FX-7 medical droids. Due to the need to care for patients, 2-1B droids spoke numerous languages.[25]
History[]
Republic Era[]
- "The senator will be fine. It was only a flesh wound."
- ―A medical droid describes Padmé Amidala's injury to Ahsoka Tano
2-1B droids were popular since the Republic Era.[1] Several 2-1B droids were part of Ajax Sigma's army during the High Republic Era.[9] One droid became a bartender working at Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina on Tatooine.[27] Other notable droids were also stationed on the Resolute[28] and the Kaliida Shoals Medical Center.[29] The BU-series bartender droid[30] and the DG-1B catering droid[31] shared the same frame design as the 2-1B droid.[30]
The droid TB-2 was a 2-1B droid stationed on the G9 Rigger-class light freighter Twilight during the Clone Wars. He was originally a hologram,[32] but was eventually uploaded into a body and stationed on both the Twilight and the Venator-class Star Destroyer Resolute[5] because of how valuable he had proven himself to be.[33]
Other notable 2-1Bs were used on worlds, such as Naboo,[34] Alderaan,[26] and Coruscant.[35] A 2-1B droid helped the group of Senator Padmé Amidala, Gregar Typho, Queen Neeyutnee, Jar Jar Binks, and C-3PO to unlock what a tactical droid named TR-350 knew about the droid's presence on Naboo. While they did not get the information out of the droid, Jar Jar happened to stumble across the solution.[36]
A 2-1B droid was on Alderaan. Senator Amidala traveled to Alderaan to attend a meeting concerning the refugees displaced by the Clone Wars. However, bounty hunter Aurra Sing attempted to assassinate her while she was giving her speech. Although Padawan Ahsoka Tano prevented Sing from scoring a direct hit, she managed to shoot the Naboo senator in the arm, knocking her unconscious. The droid treated her and later informed a worried Tano that the senator would be fine as it was only a flesh wound.[26]
A 2-1B droid was stationed inside the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. The droid patched up Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi after his staged "assassination" death and loaded the facial transformation program to morph his physical features to exactly match that of the bounty hunter Rako Hardeen.[35]
A 2-1B unit was treating Grand Minister Stin of Clabron. The Confederacy of Independent Systems sent the Separatist assassin Lis Mohles to kill him because he decided to side with the Galactic Republic in the Clone Wars. Stin ordered the medical droid to attend to Amidala's aide Moteé, who was shot in the shoulder.[37]

At the end of the Clone Wars, a 2-1B surgical droid was present at the Grand Republic Medical Facility with a DD-13 medical assistant droid, FX-6,[4] and another FX-9 surgical assistant.[38] The droids helped rebuild the body of Darth Vader following his defeat at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar[4] in 19 BBY.[39] The three droids were later moved to Fortress Vader on Mustafar.[40]

During the Imperial Era, the Galactic Empire used millions of 2-1B droids throughout its territory. One such unit later broke free and came to be known as 2-1B Delta.[41]
The 2-1B droid G2-1B7 served the Partisans during the early rebellion against the Empire. G2-1B7 kept the Partisans' leader, Saw Gerrera, alive due to his ailing health.[42]
2-1B was another notable surgical droid. He served the Alliance to Restore the Republic, and operated on the Alliance Commander Luke Skywalker. The droid treated Skywalker with bacta after he was attacked by a Wampa,[14] and was later personally requested by Skywalker[3] to treat him again after Skywalker lost his hand to Darth Vader.[14] He went on to be a member of the crew of the Home One during the Battle of Endor.[43] MHD-19 was another 2-1B in the Alliance.[44]
New Republic Era[]
During the New Republic Era, the 2-1B droid 2MED2 served the Resistance during the Cold War and was assigned to help a team of Resistance fighters transport the First Order RA-7 protocol droid O-MR1, who was believed to know the location of Admiral Gial Ackbar, who had been captured by the First Order. On the way back to the Resistance base, the team's ship crashed on an unknown planet and the only survivors were 2MED2, O-MR1, the protocol droid C-3PO, the construction droid CO-34, and the two security droids PZ-99 and VL-44. The group of droids worked together to get home, but along the way every droid except C-3PO and O-MR1 were destroyed by creatures native to the planet. 2MED2 was destroyed in an attack from a can-cell.[17]
Behind the scenes[]
The 2-1B surgical droid first appeared in the 1980 original trilogy film Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, directed by Irvin Kershner.[14] They were first identified in canon in the 2015 reference book Ultimate Star Wars, which was written by Ryder Windham, Tricia Barr, Adam Bray, and Daniel Wallace.[1] In Star Wars Legends, they first appeared in the novelization of Empire Strikes Back by Donald F. Glut, which was released prior to the film.[45]
