- "Wim, you promised we wouldn't get in trouble, but now we're way, way out past the Barrier, in so much trouble that we're lost forever."
- ―Neel, to Wim
Neel was a male Myykian youngling who lived on the isolated planet of At Attin and was best friends with another child named Wim during the early New Republic Era.[1] Around 9 ABY,[9] Wim found an old starship buried in the woods outside their city. After the two and two other children named KB and Fern investigated the ship, they accidentally activated it and became lost in space. The group of kids then forged an alliance with the ship's droid SM-33 and a Force-sensitive man called Jod Na Nawood to find their way back home and avoid a crew of pirates.[10]
Biography[]
Early life[]
Neel was born as the first of four children around the beginning of the Galactic Civil War on At Attin. However, due to the secluded nature of At Attin, he was unaware of the war and did not even know of the Destruction of Alderaan until 9 ABY. By 9 ABY he attended At Attin Middle School Gamma together with his best friend Wim, his crush Roona and the girls KB and Fern. Neel took part in some of Wim's play-pretend and transgressive behavior but was more focused on academics (intending to become an analyst like most of his classmates and his parents, unlike Wim who wanted a more aspirational job) and less willing to get in trouble than Wim.
Battle of At Attin[]
The information Neel had gained through his friendship with Hayna on At Achrann proved pivotal during the Battle of At Attin. Neel had learned that there was a turbolaser atop the school on At Achrann. Given that At Attin and At Achrann were built according to the same layout, Neel assumed that At Attin would also have such a laser in the same location, which proved true. Neel used the laser to disable the cannons of the pirate ship, allowing KB aboard the Onyx Cinder to get past the Barrier to contact Kh'ymm who in turn contacted the New Republic. The New Republic subsequently sent a squadron which engaged the pirates in battle, destroying their ship.[11]
Personality and traits[]
- "You must be a very weak clan."
"( Neel sighs ) Yeah, you're probably right. ( grunts ) We never have to fight. For anything."
"We have always had to fight just to survive. We fight for food. We fight to protect our friends. We are strong."
"But fighting is... Fighting is bad. If you just keep raiding each other, do you think it'll even ever end?"
"Yes."
"If it was me, I'd just say I was sorry. No more fighting." - ―Hayna, and Neel
Neel was a soft-spoken child who took his duties in school seriously. He was also a loyal friend to Wim, offering to help him study for his assessment test or accompanying him on an adventure.[1] Neel detested fighting, believing revenge solves nothing and that conflicts should be resolved peacefully. He aspired to grow up to be an analyst, like his mother.[8] Neel made trumpeting snores in his sleep.[12] Similar to KB in her friendship with Fern, Neel at times had difficulty asserting his own needs in his friendship with Wim, leading to the latter sometimes being unaware or even dismissive of the former's needs. This trait somewhat softened over the course of his adventure aboard the Onyx Cinder and Wim's experience with KB taught Neel's best friend to be more aware of the needs of others, including Neel.
Neel was shy when it came to romance. He had never talked to Roona despite having a crush on her. However, his experiences during the trip aboard the Onyx Cinder, especially his friendship with Hayna led him to get a surge in confidence.
Behind the scenes[]
Neel first appeared in the Disney+ live-action television series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, voiced by Robert Timothy Smith. His performance artist Kacie Borrowman using a combination of facial motion capture on-set performance in a costume and an animatronic head. The character was originally supposed to be sweet and shy but was changed to a more funny personality during filming.[3]
The character was first identified in a listing by German retailer Müller revealing the LEGO Star Wars: Skeleton Crew set 75374 The Onyx Cinder.[13] In response to fan debate as to whether Neel was a Ortolan, Leland Chee of the Lucasfilm Story Group confirmed Neel's species was its own alien race[14] which was later also confirmed by the series' creator Christopher Ford.[3]
