In the ancient Greek religion, Zeus (Ancient Greek: Ζεύς; Modern Greek: Δίας, Dias) is the "Father of Gods and men" who ruled the Olympians of Mount Olympus as a father ruled the family. He is the god of sky and thunder in Greek mythology. His Roman counterpart is Jupiter and his Etruscan counterpart is Tinia.

Zeus was the child of Cronus and Rhea, and the youngest of his siblings. In most traditions he was married to Hera, although, at the oracle of Dodona, his consort was Dione: according to the Iliad, he is the father of Aphrodite by Dione. He is known for his erotic escapades. These resulted in many godly and heroic offspring, including Athena, Apollo and Artemis, Hermes, Persephone (by Demeter), Dionysus, Perseus, Heracles, Helen of Troy, Minos, and the Muses (by Mnemosyne); by Hera, he is usually said to have fathered Ares, Hebe and Hephaestus.

As Walter Burkert points out in his book, Greek Religion, "Even the gods who are not his natural children address him as Father, and all the gods rise in his presence." For the Greeks, he was the King of the Gods, who oversaw the universe. As Pausanias observed, "That Zeus is king in heaven is a saying common to all men". In Hesiod's Theogony Zeus assigns the various gods their roles. In the Homeric Hymns he is referred to as the chieftain of the gods.

His symbols are the thunderbolt, eagle, bull, and oak. In addition to his Indo-European inheritance, the classical "cloud-gatherer" also derives certain iconographic traits from the cultures of the Ancient Near East, such as the scepter. Zeus is frequently depicted by Greek artists in one of two poses: standing, striding forward, with a thunderbolt leveled in his raised right hand, or seated in majesty. He has been shown once in 1 Simpsons episode portrayed by Mayor Quimby [1] & twice in Simpsons comics the first time portrayed by Homer [2] & the second (witch was set when he was a child) by Bart [3].

History[]

As a child his father Cronus would eat all of his brothers & sisters but Zeus was much smarter than him & so all his attempts failed. first he just chased him & tried to force him into a bath full of BBQ sauce but he dodged him & shot him with a lightning bolt causing Chronos to fall into the BBQ sauce. Then Chronos made a giant cauldron to cook him in put o diving board on & told him it was it was a hot tub, but he new it wasn't, and from the top he told his dad it was full of beautiful Nymph's a to look into the tub to see them when he kicked his dad in. After that he tried to Zeus make fall of a mountain by luring him with gold, but as gravity hadn't been created yet so he made across alright, so Chronos created gravity right there unaware he was floating at the time & so he fell. Finally he drew a door on a mountain so Zeus would think its real & crash into mount Olympus but when he went for the door it became real & went through it, Chronos tried to follow him but just crashed into the mountain causing the paint to rub of onto his stomach Zeus then came out the door with all his brothers & sisters.

He then went on to be king of the gods. In anger that Homer as Odysseus didn't sacrifice a lamb to them, he repeatedly pushed him and his crew into Crazy Islands. Eventually Heracles convinced Hera to take over.

Personality[]

In Simpson Comics #70 & 168 he was like the characters portraying him but in "Tales from the Public Domain" he talked the same as Mayor Quimby but acted very different. Showing acts of competency like yelling at barney when he destroyed Atlantis unlike the real Mayor Quimby who is completely corrupt (in Simpsons Comics #70 when Homer was Zeus he himself destroyed Sodom & Gomorrah the same way), although Barney said he used to be like that.

In both "Tales from the Public Domain" & Simpsons Comics #70 he was shown to like turning himself into animals & picking up women.

Appearance[]

As Mayor Quimby he looked just like him but with a beard, a different hair style & wearing stereotypical ancient Greek clothes with a sash like his mayor sash that says Zeus.

As Homer, he looked just like him but he wore a toga, jewelry, sandals & a laurel.

As Bart he looks like him but wears a brown head band, arm bands, a plain shirt, a sash, a Greek skirt & had a backpack full of lightning.

Trivia[]

  • Dionysus's complaint about what Zeus used to do is a reference that in mythology Zeus turned into animals to seduce women.
  • Mayor Quimby portraying Zeus could be a reference that they're married leaders who hang around other women.
