The Ayakashi (アヤカシ ) are the monsters in Samurai Sentai Shinkenger.
Overview[]
300 years prior to the start of Shinkenger, the Gedoshu, a gang of Ayakashi, led by their powerful general, Doukoku Chimatsuri, waged war on Japan. The emperor of the time asked a samurai and his four retainers who mastered the art of Mojikara, to fight back against these demons from the Sanzu River. With the samurais' powers of Mojikara and folding gods, the Gedoshu were banished back to the Sanzu River.
For the next hundreds of years, Nanashi Company soldiers and the more powerful Ayakashi would slowly slip into Tokyo to cause chaos in order to make the Sanzu River overflood, which would allow the entire army of Gedoshu to enter the human world without the risk of drying up. Generations of Shinkengers were tasked to fight back against the demons, secretly keeping humans safe.
For all their might and powers, Ayakashi can only remain in the human world until they begin to dry up, returning to the Sanzu River to regain their moisture, and the longer they remain in the human world as they dry up, the longer they need to hydrate.
Each Ayakashi has two lives, the second life allowing them to grow giant once they are slain in human-size battle, which kicks in seconds after an Ayakashi is slain the first time. Shitari of the Bones has shown it is possible for grant a Ayakashi a third life, but the third life process requires a second Ayakashi to transfer their second life into the donor. Chinomanako lost his second life when he used the Diendriver to transform.
One curiosity about the minor Ayakashi is that almost all of them have names made up of five syllables.
