Hala is the Kahuna of Melemele Island. In order to go to Akala Island, the player character must defeat Totem Gumshoos/Alolan Raticate and then battle Hala. Once the player character defeats Hala, Hala registers Tauros to the player character's ride pager.

Just as Lusamine unleashes the Ultra Beasts on the world, Hala teams up with Tapu Koko to battle on Melemele Island.

Later, once the Alolan Pokémon League is established, Hala is requested by Kukui to become an Elite Four member, which he accepts.

Unlike Pokémon Sun and Moon, Hala does not become an Elite Four member, with Molayne taking his place.

After becoming champion the player can challenge Hala in Ikki Town

Trivia[]

  • Hala is the first trainer who isn't a regional professor to give out First partner Pokémon to new trainers.
  • Hala's name likely comes from "holler" (to shout, often done by martial artists to psych themselves up). It may also come from 腹 (hara, stomach, as sumo wrestlers are often overweight).
  • The man who is in his house's kitchen mentioned that Hala stopped acting too serious around Hau after seeing how his then younger grandson cried upon seeing his serious look
