Hala is a character appearing in the games, Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. He is the Island Kahuna of Melemele Island. He is also the grandfather of the player character's rival, Hau.
Appearance[]
Hala is a stocky old man, who has white hair tied in a short spiky ponytail similar to his grandson Hau, as well as white eyebrows and moustache. He wears a blue shirt under a long sleeve yellow haori with some large flower pattern, a white rope tied in a knot over a red fan with black guards and white a pattern. He also wears knee length white shorts and blue flip-flops with white straps. In addition, Hala has squinty eyes, Hala also wears white wrist band on the left hand's wrist.
Personality[]
Hala is a caring grandfather to Hau. He prefers fighting types and respects the player character's power. Hala is a bold and seasoned trainer, though he's fatter than the typical trainer of his type specialty, Hala makes up for it with his go-getting perseverance.
Biography[]
Sun and Moon[]
Hala is the Kahuna of Melemele Island. In order to go to Akala Island, the player character must defeat Totem Gumshoos/Alolan Raticate and then battle Hala. Once the player character defeats Hala, Hala registers Tauros to the player character's ride pager.
Just as Lusamine unleashes the Ultra Beasts on the world, Hala teams up with Tapu Koko to battle on Melemele Island.
Later, once the Alolan Pokémon League is established, Hala is requested by Kukui to become an Elite Four member, which he accepts.
Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon[]
Hala is the kahuna of Melemele Island. In order to go to Akala Island, the player character must defeat Totem Gumshoos/Alolan Raticate and then battle Hala. Once the player character defeats Hala, Hala registers Tauros to the player's ride pager.
Later, Hala's grandson, Hau, teams up with Tapu Koko to battle an Ultra Beast on Melemele Island when they are released on the world by Necrozma.
Unlike Pokémon Sun and Moon, Hala does not become an Elite Four member, with Molayne taking his place.
After becoming champion the player can challenge Hala in Ikki Town

- Hala is the first trainer who isn't a regional professor to give out First partner Pokémon to new trainers.
- Hala's name likely comes from "holler" (to shout, often done by martial artists to psych themselves up). It may also come from 腹 (hara, stomach, as sumo wrestlers are often overweight).
- The man who is in his house's kitchen mentioned that Hala stopped acting too serious around Hau after seeing how his then younger grandson cried upon seeing his serious look
