Pokémon: Indigo League (simply as Pokémon, when it first aired, Pocket Monsters in Japan) is the first season of Pokémon the Series (under the name Pokémon the Series: The Beginning, first series of the Pokémon: The Original Series). It originally aired in Japan on TV Tokyo from April 1, 1997, to January 21, 1999. It later aired in the United States in first-run syndication from September 8 to November 20, 1998, and on Kids' WB from February 13 to November 27, 1999, concluding with the airing of the previously unreleased Beauty and the Beach on June 24, 2000.
It features 82 (80 outside Japan since The Legend of Dratini and Electric Soldier Porygon were unaired outside Japan, later 78 since Beauty and the Beach and Holiday Hi-Jynx are banned in recent DVD releases) episodes of Ash Ketchum and his friends, Misty and Brock adventuring through Kanto.
The episodes were produced by OLM, Inc., with Takeshi Shudo as head writer and Kunihiko Yuyama as chief director. Masamitsu Hidaka served as the supervising director for the series until the beginning of Pokémon Battle Frontier.
