"Princess vs. Princess" is the 52nd episode of Pokémon the Series, though it is actually the 48th episode in chronological order. It first aired in Japan on July 9, 1998, and in the United States on September 4, 1999.
Plot[]
While in O-Hina Town, Misty and Jessie enjoy the perks of Princess Festival Day, a holiday where women rule. The two then compete in the Queen of the Princess Festival contest for the grand prize of a set of Pokémon Princess Dolls (and also a picture with movie star Fiorella Cappuccino, but Misty and Jessie are more interested in the dolls because they never got their own dolls when they were younger). They both make it all the way through the tournament with the help of their friends' Pokémon, but the final match nearly takes a turn for the worse when Misty's team is mostly outmatched by Jessie's newly-caught Lickitung!

Notes[]
- Who's That Pokémon?: Lickitung (Japan), Butterfree (United States)
- Pikachu's Jukebox: My Best Friends
- Due to Kids' WB holding over this episode until the fall of 1999, this is the first episode to feature Pikachu's Jukebox, replacing the Kanto PokéRap.
- This episode's title is formatted as Princess Vs Princess on the DVD menu of Australian DVDs, and as Princess Versus Princess in Pokémon Trading Cards series 2.
- The Jynx princess doll uses Jynx's old design, before its skin color was changed to purple due to the controversy surrounding the design.
- As of 2023, most streaming copies of the episode have the Jynx princess doll changed to the new purple design.
- As noted above, this episode is actually supposed to take place before So Near, Yet So Farfetch'd, as evidenced by the fact that this is the episode in which Jessie catches her Lickitung, and the fact that Misty does not have Togepi in this episode (nor is Brock caring for its egg). In Japan, this episode was actually originally scheduled to air on the real-life holiday of Girls' Day on March 3, 1998, but was rescheduled following the aftermath of Electric Soldier Porygon and, for whatever reason, was not aired until after July 9th, alongside The Purr-fect Hero.
- On a similar note, it was also supposed to take place after Holiday Hi-Jynx (which ended up airing later in both regions), as both James and Meowth note her reasons for hating the Princess Festival (Hinamatsuri in the Japanese version) were similar to her reasons for hating Christmas in the Japanese version.
- No doubt further adding to the confusion of this episode airing after So Near, Yet So Farfetch'd, the Indigo League DVD sets also place this and "The Purr-fect Hero" between The Breeding Center Secret and Riddle Me This.
- However, when this episode was re-aired in the Pocket Monsters Encore program, it was shown in its proper spot between A Chansey Operation and Holy Matrimony!
- In the Japanese version, this episode is one of the few to assign its events a specific date (March 3). This is because it was meant to air on Hinamatsuri.
- The Japanese version also states the name of the episode's setting, which the English dub omit.
