~ Hank to Scott on his survival in the quantum realm. |
Doctor Henry Jonathan "Hank" Pym is a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is a brilliant scientist who managed to create quantum particles that allowed him to shrink in size, becoming the first Ant-Man, and later became a consultant for S.H.I.E.L.D. and partner of Wasp. Decades later, Hank decided to have Scott Lang become the new Ant-Man, and help him stop his former protégé, Darren Cross, from using the same particles to sell across the world.
Hank would later work on trying to find his wife, Janet, in the quantum realm after Scott managed to return from it when defeating Darren. He would succeed in finding Janet, and was later killed by the Mad Titan Thanos during the hunt for the Infinity Stones. He was resurrected by the Hulk in 2023, and later attended Tony Starks' funeral to honor his sacrifice in stopping Thanos and his army.
He is portrayed by Michael Douglas.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Good?[]
Background[]
- Though he has a ton of jerkish moments, those happened only because he no longer had Janet van Dyne, and he subverts most of it when she returns from the Quantum Realm.
- In his early years, was part of the U.S. army before being recruited into S.H.I.E.L.D as a consultant.
- When he discovered a type of particles that could shrink in size, he created a suit that could shrink himself, naming it the Ant-Man suit.
- He also created the EMP Communication Device, which allowed him to telepathically communicate with ants.
- When Elihas Starr escaped to Buenos Aires with his stolen technology, he, along with his wife Janet van Dyne, tracked him down, and when he realized he was about to activate the Quantum Tunnel, persuaded him to stop although he refused.
- On another mission, he tried to shrink to subatomic size to stop a missile, although he failed because his suit had sustained heavy damage.
- He mourned the supposed death of his wife Janet.
- Though he technically cheated on his wife with Linda, unlike Janet, Hank didn’t know she was still alive and even broke up with Linda because she was nothing like Janet.
- After leaving S.H.I.E.L.D., he created his own company named Pym Technologies, which was a very successful company that made him rich.
- Hires a protégé named Darren Cross and trains him to become his assistance in Pym Technologies, even though he would later abuse his power.
Ant-Man[]
- He agrees to help his daughter Hope after he discovers that his protege was sharing his technology to HYDRA and the Ten Rings.
- He tries to get Darren Cross to reconsider sharing his technology to criminals, although he fails.
- After finding out Scott Lang's break-in to Vistacorp Headquarters, he decides to test his skills by allowing him to steal the Ant-Man suit.
- He breaks Scott Lang free and offers him a second chance in life.
- Tells Scott his plan on stopping Darren Cross.
- Trains Scott on how to use his Ant-Man suit.
- Allows Scott Lang's friends Luis, Kurt and Dave to join his heist crew in stopping Darren Cross.
Between Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War[]
- Helps Scott Lang make his suit grow, which would later allow Scott to use this feature to help Captain America and his allies.
Ant-Man and the Wasp[]
- Hands over a prototype of the next Wasp suit to his daughter Hope and makes her the next Wasp.
- Rescues his wife in the Quantum Realm before the two kiss.
Avengers: Endgame[]
- His Pym Particles indirectly allowed Scott Lang to convince the Avengers to time travel in the Quantum Realm, get the Infinity Stones, and resurrect everybody.
- He came to Tony Stark's funeral out of respect for him saving the whole world from Thanos despite the fact that he distrusts him due to Howard Stark.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania[]
- He created a Stature suit for Scott's daughter Cassie and taught her all about the Quantum Realm.
- He showed no resentment for his wife having been unfaithful, admitting he had been seeing someone in their time apart (even though his reasoning, believing she was dead, was more excusable compared to hers).
- He attends Cassie Lang's fake birthday party out of respect.
- He unleashes his ants to defeat Kang and his soldiers. Had this not been done, more freedom fighters would've died and Kang likely would’ve killed Ant-Man, Wasp and Cassie, as well as escape and unleash his wrath on the Multiverse.
What Prevents Him From Being Pure Good?[]
- His research causing everybody to be brought back from the Snap is unintentional, causing it to rely on Fridge Brilliance. However, he was mostly responsible for making Ant-Man the hero he is today and he brought back Janet van Dyne who would later help them navigate in the Quantum Realm, so this is minor.
- He is not willing to share his Pym Particles to S.H.I.E.L.D. or even allow them to get recreated, which caused tensions between him and Howard Stark. While it is understandable, this was still very selfish on Hank Pym's part.
- He has many jerkish moments. Earlier in his life he punches Mitchell Carson, resigned from S.H.I.E.L.D out of spite, and asked how his face was years later. In Ant-Man, he still punches his protégé Darren Cross in an attempt to reconsider his decisions, showing that he is occasionally lethal as well. In Ant-Man and the Wasp, his arrogant behavior made his G.O.L.I.A.T.H. project with Bill Foster end. However, he subverts most of them by the end of Quantimania, making this prevention minor.
Trivia[]
- He was initially a Heroic Benchmark for failing the admirable standards; however, after it was pointed out he doesn't fail it by that much due to his role in creating Ant-Man, he was reproposed and approved as Near Pure Good.
- Fittingly, his What If...? counterpart is a Near Pure Evil.
