"Revelation" is a Season 5 episode of the series, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. As based on the series' production order specifically, "Revelation" is the 20th written and produced episode of Season 5. It is also the 124th written and produced episode of the series, overall.

Synopsis

Lila is an accomplished liar. This evil talent has allowed her to be loved by all, and even to be hired by Gabriel Agreste. But Marinette and Adrien's growing closer pushes the boy's father to name Kagami as the new face of his brand, enraging Lila. She uses an incident in class to call for new elections in order to replace Marinette as class representative. But the campaign goes wrong, much to Monarch's delight. Tread lightly, for with Lila, things are more than often not what they seem...

Plot

The episode starts with Lila apologizing to her supposed mom, saying that due to the internet in the savannah, she has to go and save a baby rhino and she will call her later and hangs up. Just then, another one of Lila's mothers who is deaf walks into the room and asks Lila who she was talking to with sign language. Lila replies that it was her agent and goes to Sabine's art class. She gets on a bus and uses her acting skills and the fact that her face and voice are used on Alliance rings to get a free ride. She uses this opportunity to lie and make herself look better to the other passengers. She arrives in front of the school and picks up a coin from the ground and puts it in her purse.

At the art class, all of the Alliance rings update as Lila is replaced by Kagami. At first Lila, is angry but decides to take advantage of the situation. She then uses the fact that she is no longer the female model on Alliance rings to impress the other people at the class and say that she decided to quit to spend more time with Sabine. She also tells the other people that Marinette is not.

Meanwhile, at the Agreste mansion, Gabriel takes off his left glove and sees most of his hand is completely black and that Cat Noir's cataclysm has spread there. Nathalie walks in the room and tells Gabriel that someone is waiting for him at the gate. Gabriel uses his computer and sees Lila at the gate, telling him that she believes the update was part of their agreement and the face of his brand. However, Gabriel tells Lila she was only the face of the Gabriel brand in exchange for the mission in which she had to keep Adrien away from bad company and that she failed at it. Gabriel tells Lila she will remain as nothing as the camera retracts back into the wall and the conversation ends. At the outside of the Agreste mansion, Lila is extremely angry at what happened with the new update and with what she has just heard. Gabriel is tempted to use Lila's anger but resists, deciding that akumatizing a person who hates him is not a good idea. Lila walks off.

At school, Marinette and Adrien are walking through school, holding hands as they notice everyone is adoring the image and idea of Adrien and Kagami together as a couple on their Alliance rings. When Marinette asks Adrien whether or not he was aware about the recent update, he replies with no. When Marinette's friends rush over and Rose asks Adrien about whether or not his father knows that he and Kagami broke up. Adrien answers with they are just images and that his father can do nothing to force his truth on them as Lila listens in on the conversation as the bell rings and class starts.

In class, Miss Bustier is giving back the students their test results. When she gives back Chloé and Sabrina's result, she points out that both papers have Sabrina's name. Chloé is surprised and angry at Sabrina who apologizes and says it was due to her not sleeping for several nights as she was preparing the end-of-year exam cheats. Miss Bustier is shocked as she asks Sabrina whether or not she has been doing Chloé's homework the whole time only for Chloé to tell her that Sabrina forged Chloé's handwriting and finds out that this has been going on ever since Sabrina became literate and that Chloé doesn't know how to write. Miss Bustier decides to give Sabrina's real grade and that she must not waste her energy for Chloé and she needs some for herself as well. Miss Bustier then deduces that it must have been a very long time since Chloé did any of her own work, she is falling behind and she is going to need help.

Marinette objects, saying that it is unfair that the only punishment that Chloé will receive is just her getting help. Miss Bustier then tells Marinette that Chloé being behind is already enough of a punishment and she is just like everyone else at the school. Chloé disagrees with the idea of her being like the other students as she has wealth and that there is no need for her to learn because she will never need to work. Lila sends a text to Chloé saying she will handle it and she has got it. Lila tells Marinette that she must have discussed Chloé's difficulties to the other teachers as the class representative. Marinette is confused as she points out Chloé has no difficulties but instead just privileges. Lila uses her acting skills to lie that Marinette's relationship with Adrien means she does not have time for her class rep duties. Lila goes on to say she quit as being the female face for the Gabriel brand to make time with her classmates and tells everyone that due to her being absent the day when class elections were held, it was not fair and she could be the new class rep. Miss Bustier then decides to consider about Lila's proposition at lunch.

At lunch, Marinette tells Lila is always up to trouble but Alya steps in and says Marinette disliked her from her first day and that there has been no evidence of Lila doing anything wrong. Adrien agrees with Marinette by also saying Lila is a lair. Alya and Nino aww, saying that it is adorable how Adrien is willing to agree with Marinette. At a different lunch table, Lila and Chloé agree that they both want to get rid of Marinette and make her lose all that she has. Lila tells Chloé that if she does everything she says, Chloé will get what wants at the end as Sabrina listens in.

Class resumes as Miss Bustier announces she has decide to take on Lila's suggestion and hold an election as to whether or not Lila should become the new class representative. Lila gives a speech and makes Chloé her deputy as the class wonders if Lila can make Chloé change for the better as Marinette is infuriated. Marinette and Alya give their own speech of their own. Just when the class is about to vote, Lila decides to quit the election, saying that Marinette was right to insult her and that Gabriel Agreste fired her as she loved helping people. Lila runs out of the classroom, pretending to be crying.

In the locker room, she places her phone in her locker and tries to get Monarch to sense her anger in a bathroom stall. Monarch in his lair, senses some powerful hatred. Shocked that the emotion is Lila's, he considers for a few seconds whether or not to grant her powers and the consequences that may happen. He decides that the anger is no longer directed at him and creates a megakuma and uses Kaalki to teleport it to her. The megakuma arrives in the bathroom stall and enters Lila's Alliance ring. Monarch gives Lila the power of the Fox Miraculous as Lila is akumatized into Hoaxer.

Monarch takes off his Alliance ring in his lair and destroys it so Lila can't control him. Hoaxer walks out of the bathroom stall and enters everyone's Alliance rings. She then hypnotizes everyone who is wearing an Alliance ring. Marinette transforms into Ladybug in a bathroom stall as Hoaxer tells everyone of a fake revelation that makes everyone believe Marinette is Monarch and that she wants to akumatize Lila. Everyone in the classroom that wears Alliance rings believes Hoaxer's fake news as they walk out of the classroom and ignore Adrien's warning. The classmates run and search for Marinette.

Adrien splits up from Ivan and Mylène and transforms into Cat Noir in the classroom. The people of Paris hunt down Marinette as Ladybug and Cat Noir meet up. They capture officer Roger and takes off his Alliance ring as he reverts back to normal. The Parisians stop looking for Marinette before Hoaxer tells her victims who are under her control that Ladybug and Cat Noir have taken off their ring. She makes up a new story that Ladybug and Cat Noir are from outer space and tells them where Ladybug Cat Noir, at City Hall. The people of Paris run after Hoaxer tells them to capture Ladybug and Cat Noir's Miraculous and bring them back to her. The people surround the heroes as they give officer Roger's ring back to him and tell him to not put the ring on. They run off and hide as Ladybug uses her Lucky Charm and receives a sewing machine. She runs off while Cat Noir distracts the hypnotized Parisians.

Back in her room, Ladybug figures out that the sewing machine brought her here as Alya jumps out of nowhere and as her Alliance ring is removed. Ladybug and Alya are on a rooftop as Ladybug detransforms back into Marinette. She gives the Ladybug Miraculous to Alya as Hoaxer appears and tries to take Cat Noir's Miraculous who is captured.

In her room, Nathalie receives a revelation from Hoaxer that tells her that Gabriel Agreste is an alien and that he must have other secrets that he is hiding. Nathalie gets out of her bed and uses her phone and not her Alliance ring just like how Hoaxer ordered her to. Nathalie takes pictures of Gabriel Agreste's fry shop, a menu at the shop, one of Gabriel Agreste's old passports, a picture of the fry costume designed by him from in "Psychomedian", a picture of André Bourgeois, Audrey Bourgeois, Gabriel Agreste and Émilie together in their younger days and a picture of Nathalie, Gabriel Agreste who is holding the Peacock Miraculous and Émilie on the Tibetan mountains where they dug up and found it and the Butterfly Miraculous.

Cat Noir is fighting the other people of Paris while Nathalie sends Hoaxer a picture of a document in the safe behind the painting of Émilie signed by Gabriel Agreste about his brand and Tomoe Tsurugi's company. Nathalie also takes pictures of pages in the Grimoire. Marinette appears and presents herself to Hoaxer. Meanwhile, Nathalie uses the elevator and arrives at the Crypt. She takes a picture of Émilie in her coffin and a picture of her wearing one of the Graham de Vanily Twin rings. Scarabella, who is hiding, texts Cat Noir about her plan to defeat Hoaxer. In her room, Nathalie then sends Hoaxer all of the photos that she requested, puts it back into her safe and returns to her bed. Hoaxer rejects the megakuma and is deakumatized back into Lila as she smiles deviously. Scarabella throws the Lucky Charm into the air as it puts everyone where they belong and turns people back to normal.

Monarch detransforms in his lair and turns back into Gabriel and angrily yells it's always Marinette's fault and that she will pay. At school, Adrien apologizes to Marinette for being too kind to Lila and that giving people like Lila chances will just make them take advantage of it and that disasters will occur. Marinette takes his hand and swears they'll expose Lila of her lies one day. In class, Lila is unanimously elected the new class representatives along with Chloé. Marinette tells Alya she did not trust Lila by quitting the election but did it so she can eventually prove to the class who Lila really is deep down. Lila destroys her Alliance ring by stepping on it and receives the pictures that Nathalie sent to her when she was under her control. Lila goes to her locker and swears that she will get the Butterfly Miraculous from Monarch as the episode ends.

• This is the third season 5 episode that is not named after the concept of a Miraculous.
  • Many revelations are shown throughout the whole episode:
    • Lila is revealed to have at least 3 moms who she keeps away from one another by using different identities and lies that prevent them from ever meeting or learning the truth. Besides Mrs. Rossi (an Italian ambassador), she has an unknown mother who thinks she is in Africa helping endangered animals and also a deaf-mute mother who communicates through sign language who thinks Lila is an actress who needs to travel a lot.
    • Miss Bustier discovers that Sabrina has been doing all of Chloé's schoolwork for her and that has been happening ever since both of them learned how to write, with Sabrina even learning how to forge Chloé's handwriting.
    • More about Gabriel's past is revealed:
      • Gabriel's family used to own a French fry shop, and his birth name is Gabi Grassette.
      • His height according to his old ID is 1.79 m.
      • Gabriel and Émilie have known Audrey and André Bourgeois since their youth.
      • He, Émilie and Nathalie discovered the Peacock Miraculous (and possibly the Butterfly Miraculous) in the snow of the mountains of Tibet (possibly near where Master Fu lost it).
    • Lila gets to know about all of Gabriel's secrets, starting from his past, how he discovered the Butterfly and Peacock Miraculous, his deals with Tomoe Tsurugi, pictures of the Miraculous spellbook, ending with Émilie's body and the importance of the Graham de Vanily Twin Rings for him.
    • Adrien realizes his error in his approach to people like Chloé and Lila – they can take advantage of the kindness they're shown and second chances they're given.
      • With Chloé, he gave her too many chances to change her behavior, evidenced in "Despair Bear" and "Queen Banana", which always ended with her not changing at all. After his pleas to apologize to Marinette falling on deaf ears in "Derision", Adrien officially ends his friendship with her.
      • With Lila, he didn't warn his friends about her lying and manipulative nature, thinking that way she would only get angry and want to lie even more without learning anything, as shown in "Chameleon". However, because he waited too long to tell his friends about her, they didn't believe him, as they think he is only supporting Marinette (who hates Lila) because she is his girlfriend. If he had warned them about Lila sooner, she wouldn't have that much control over their classmates.
        • It could also be that he was afraid that his friends wouldn't believe him even if he did tell them the truth sooner.
    • And looking at the state of the photos in the safe concludes they were burned but how they were can lead to these possible outcomes:
      • Because of his in-laws and Colt, Gabriel decided to burn them as to not be reminded of his past until Émilie or Nathalie convinced him to save them.
      • It could be before, he and Émilie lived in the Agreste Mansion, they lived somewhere else in Paris, likely Gabriel's place or since they were friends, Audrey and Andre, it could be that they were staying at the Grand Paris Hotel until they could find a place of their own but either building caught on fire and they were able to save the pictures.
      • Before Adrien was born, it could be the Mansion caught on fire but the couple were able to get out, save the pictures and rebuild it.
  • There have also been revelations in other episodes and the characters too:
    • During Adrien's character development, he was originally supposed to be disabled, and use a crutch. However, the producers and the broadcasters didn't trust themselves to write him well, so the idea was scrapped and it later became Cat Noir's staff.
    • At first, Felix was only suppose to exist in the PV Version only but that wasn't until "Felix" and his version of him as Cat Noir was apart of in-universe movies.
    • In "Heroes' Day", Team Miraculous discovered that Hawk Moth also had the Peacock Miraculous in his possession.
    • In "Chrismaster", as Ladybug; Marinette was surprised that the story she made up about Santa's rules, making an exception to the most well behaved kid in the world and her being said kid was actually true.
    • In "Miraculous Shanghai", when Marinette was told the truth about Fei's betrayal it's likely she figured out that Lian, Kang and Jiao saw Fei stealing her in the first place and tried to stop her.
      • Nor that kwamis can automatically speak any language in the world.
    • In "Miraculous New York", Ladybug and Cat Noir were surprised to find a Miraculous in New York, and with her being told that the Eagle Miraculous belonged to Gilbert Lafeyette, knowing of his history and judging by the time frame of when Master Fu destroyed the Order. The duo likely should've been surprised by the fact that they and Hawk Moth found a jewel that doesn't go with their box thereby extension would be aware of the existence of another Miracle box.
    • Before the events of "Truth" and "Lies", Ladybug gave Cat Noir a small piece of paper that said, "Halfwit" and kept it in his bell, in case Gabriel ever got his hands on any Miraculouses and forced the kwamis to tell him where she lives. So basically, he had that in his bell during the entirety of season 4.
    • In "Truth", when Marinette tried to figure out the Miracle Box and opened it, she and Tikki were surprised that the remaining kwamis got out.
    • In "Sole Crusher", Chloé was revealed to have a half-sister named Zoé.
    • From "Strikeback", Cat Noir was shocked and angry that Ladybug had a fear of him being akumatized, but soon realized in later episodes that she was right to be afraid, and that she was so desperate to stop Hawk Moth and any other evil Butterfly Miraculous holder before that happened to save him.
    • In "Destruction", Ladybug's plan to trap Monarch in case he found out where she lives was shown.
    • In "Miraculous Paris", Shadybug and Claw Noir were saddened by the realization and revelation that Betterfly was right about The Supreme.
      • Tikki revealed to Marinette that the kwamis know and live in parallel universes simultaneously.
      • Also Adrien knew about the ultimate power and even thought about using it to bring his mother back but realized for it to happen another innocent family would end up like his broken and couldn't wish it upon anyone.
    • In "Perfection", as Cat Noir, Adrien always carries a notepad on him.
    • In "Derision", Adrien learned of Marinette, Kim, and Chloe's history prior before they met and just his father, Chloe too is responsible for hindering their relationship romantically.
    • In "Emotion", Felix learned so many surprising revelations about the Miraculous practically answering his own questions, how Colt was right in him acting like a monster and he caused the one thing the heroes were trying to avoid: someone's permanent death at the hands of the jewels as well as acknowledging that Ladybug, Cat Noir and their team were the real heroes.
    • In "Confrontation", a hidden power of the Magical Charms was uncovered. It is also revealed that Lila's name isn't actually Lila, for at the end of the episode, it's revealed that she holds another identity as Cerise Bianca, where she does not wear her wig.
    • In "Revolution", Gabriel was surprised that Ladybug and Cat Noir obtained their adult powers despite still being teenagers.
    • In "Representation", Kagami is revealed to have learned Marinette's identity as Ladybug after eavesdropping on her conversation with Alya in "Perfection".
      • This may also mean that Félix knows, due to Kagami sharing her knowledge of Marinette's identity as Ladybug.
• Lila continues to keep her word to make Marinette end up alone. This time, she decides to take Marinette's role as class representative by manipulating Miss Bustier to hold elections. She claims Marinette's love life was preventing her from carrying out her duty, such as helping Chloé become a better person, and that she would love to take that responsibility away from her (indirectly painting Marinette as a selfish girl). She emphasizes that by having Chloé act as her deputy to show she can actually change. Lila later withdraws her candidacy, pretending it was because Marinette made her feel useless and stupid for believing Chloé could change.
  • While akumatized as Hoaxer, she makes everyone believe Marinette is Monarch, causing her to become a target to all of Paris.
  • Eventually, Lila and Chloé win the re-election, becoming the new class representatives.
• It's revealed that it's only two weeks until the end of the school year.
• This is the seventh time Lila gets akumatized following "Volpina", "Catalyst", "Mayura", "Chameleon" and 2 off-screen akumatizations into Volpina as seen in "Mr. Pigeon 72". This time, however, she gets akumatized into Hoaxer, her third overall akumatized form and second fox-themed identity.
• One of the students in the school mentions that she ships Adrien and Kagami and even wrote a fanfic about them. This may be a reference to Adrigami, a once popular real-life fan pairing (and one acknowledged by the show itself)^[6] between Adrien and Kagami.
• A student who looks similar to Fei can be seen in one scene at the school.
• Though Ladybug detransformed after summoning her Lucky Charm, Scarabella later uses the same one to call upon Miraculous Ladybug, meaning she either used the power herself and received the same object, or Ladybug's detransformation didn't cause it to disappear in the first place.
• Hoaxer receiving the power of Mirage from Monarch is a reference to her previous akumatized form, Volpina, who possessed the exact same power.
• It's mentioned that Mylène and Ivan don't wear Alliance rings, which was first seen in "Passion".
• Lila decides to destroy her Alliance ring to symbolically cut her ties with Gabriel Agreste.
• This is the third time Alya transforms into Scarabella following "Hack-San" and "Transmission".
• Lila is the ninth character to reject an akuma after being fully akumatized and reverting to normal on its own, following Alya in "Gang of Secrets", Nino in "Rocketear", Sabine in "Qilin", Gabriel in "Dearest Family", Chloé in "Penalteam", Jalil in "Reunion", Kagami in "Perfection" and A.D.A. in "Intuition".
• This is the third time someone calls out and waits to be akumatized, following "Penalteam" and "Reunion".

• If Lila's fake revelations through her hypnotizations are counted, this is the eighth appearance of the space power-up, following "Miraculous New York", "Miraculous Shanghai", "Dearest Family", "Ephemeral", "Multiplication", and "Intuition".
• This episode shares some resemblance to the MCU movie Black Widow.
  • In Black Widow, the Widows are under control called Red Dust, with a chip inside of them. Here, the Paris citizens are under control through their alliance rings by Hoaxer.
  • In Black Widow, Yelena takes out the chip that was inserted inside of her and Dreykov finds out. Here, Ladybug removes the alliance ring from Roger and Hoaxer finds out; she later removes Alya's as well.
    • The only difference is that in Black Widow, vials are destroyed in front of the Widows to free them from Dreykov's control, which does not happen here.
• This episode also shares some similarities to "Hack-San".
  • Both akumatized villains (Hoaxer and Robostus) have a red color scheme with some black and white in their costume, as well as the fact that their names are not the episode title.
  • Both akumatized villains hypnotize people that are in possession of technological devices, with their eyes glowing red as well. However, in Hoaxer's case, the victims eyes' glow red continuously and can be un-hypnotized by removing their allicance ring, whilst with Robostus, the victims eyes' temporarily glow red and there was no known way of restoring them without defeating him.
  • Nathalie contributes to the plot in some capacity; where in this episode she delivers Gabriel's private information to Hoaxer, while in "Hack-San", she uses the titular sentimonster to infect Markov and allow Shadow Moth to akumatize him.
  • Both episodes feature Alya as Scarabella.
  • Both episodes are also animated by SAMG.
  • In addition, some of the background music that plays before and after Shadow Moth creates Hack-San also plays here, during Lila's akumatization and when Hoaxer directs civilians to chase after Ladybug and Cat Noir.
• This is the first time Lila's goal as an akumatized villain is not getting revenge on Ladybug.
• The end card is similar to the 2016 Marvel Studios film Captain America: Civil War.
• When asked about how long Sabrina had been doing her homework, Chloé responds "Oh, since we learned to write— I mean, since Sabrina did", which could imply that she is illiterate.
  • Despite this, she wrote her name on her gift for Miss Bustier in "Zombizou".

Errors

• When Gabriel looks at his cataclysmed hand before talking to Lila, his Alliance rings are all absent.
• When Monarch calls Trixx's cage, the symbol on the cage is the Dog Miraculous symbol, instead of the Fox.
• When Cat Noir first meets with Ladybug, her face is unusually brighter and paler than normal.
• When Monarch tells the kwamis that their guardian will have a difficult time escaping all these revelations, Daizzi is miscolored blue.
