Circa 200,000 years ago, a planetoid in this system was the site of a colony. The colony was destroyed by orbital bombardment, leaving artifacts in the area around the world. (STO mission: "Beta Lankal System Patrol")

In the mid-22nd century, the Klingon Defense Force maintained a space station in the system. On September 17, 2165, the QuchHa' used a Ware drone fleet to turn the Imperial fleet defending the space station into a cloud of debris. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Live by the Code)

24th century[]

During the Klingon Civil War of 2368, the House of Duras defeated the forces of Gowron in the Mempa sector, forcing them to regroup at Beta Lankal. (TNG episode: "Redemption II")
The system was the site of a planet where a Zalkatian archeological dig begun in 2375. It was at this site that the first records were found indicating the four Malkus Artifacts, when combined, would constitute an even more powerful weapon than they did separately. (TNG - The Brave and the Bold, Book Two novella: The Final Artifact)
In 2376, Klingon Chancellor Martok maintained a base in the Beta Lankal system. The base came under attack by forces from the House of Duras led by the pretender Toral. During the battle between loyal and Toral's forces, Ambassador Worf arrived with the USS Avenger and brought Martok aboard to transport him and the Sword of Kahless to Qo'noS. The Avenger departed the system through a wormhole. (TNG video game: Armada mission: "The Enemy Within")
In the same year, the Federation operated a starbase in the vicinity of the system, and several Starfleet ships conducted surveys of the area. They came under attack when Locutus of Borg and his flotilla invaded the system. (TNG video game: Armada mission: "Assimilation")

In 2409, the Tholian Assembly competed with the Romulan Republic and its Federation and Klingon allies in collecting artifacts near the Beta Lankal planetoid. (STO mission: "Beta Lankal System Patrol")
- The stellar notation using the Greek language letter "beta" indicates that there might be a star group or constellation of some sort named "Lankal", of which Beta Lankal would logically be indicated to be the second most prominent star or system.
