The Butler, Rewarding is Chapter 179 of the Kuroshitsuji manga.
Summary[]
Sebastian inspects the results of Baldroy's potato-peeling task and gives him three points for it as Baldroy neither removed all potato eyes nor all of the skin. Baldroy replies that Sebastian is being very picky when it comes to potatoes that are meant to be smashed anyway and says that three points out of five are rather low for this reason. Then, Sebastian clarifies that he meant three points out of a hundred. He points out that Baldroy was unable to peel ten potatoes within an hour and laments that he can neither cook nor prepare. Thus, Sebastian has no idea what tasks he can even give him.
Baldroy replies that Sebastian should not let a man work in the kitchen as cooking and cleaning are "women's work." Sebastian tells him that the 19th century is nearly over and that he is still living in the past. Annoyed, Baldroy then reminds him that Sebastian hired him to be a private warrior; there should be no need of him having to play chef. In turn, Sebastian reminds him that his employment contract detailed him having to fulfill duties beyond that of a private warrior.
Sebastian tells him to finish peeling the potatoes when Mey-Rin enters the kitchen to inform Sebastian that Old Man Sam has arrived with the weekly food. Sebastian follows Mey-Rin out and beckons Baldroy to accompany them as he is an expert for manual labor.
Outside, Sebastian checks their order with Old Man Sam. They make sure everything was delivered, and then Sebastian asks him how things are in the village. Sam tells him that he has seen a fine carriage in front of Charlie's Inn. Charlie was very happy to have five guests as he rarely gets any. Sam's grandson overhears their talk and adds that Habbie from the liquor store told him that a stranger came to the store and asked him what kind of liquor the lord of the estate prefers. Habbie then surprised the stranger by telling him that the lord does not drink. Sam, his grandson, and Sebastian laugh at this, and Sebastian states that they do stock liquor for their guests though. Then, Sebastian pays Sam and waves them goodbye.
When they are gone, Sebastian turns to Baldroy and tells him that he can stop peeling potatoes and that he has to clean the stillroom instead. Baldroy asks him why he has to clean it, and Sebastian replies that the stillroom is stocked with items used to entertain special guests. He says that he should look inside all the cupboards and then leaves.
Baldroy heads to the stillroom and finds it in a perfectly clean state. He decides that it does not need to be cleaned and leans against the table and eats instead, thinking of the woman and child.
That night, Baldroy wakes up when he hears footsteps. He listens at the door and figures that there must be five or six people outside and that they are not thieves as sneak thieves would not operate in such large groups. Baldroy gets and loads his gun and turns to Finnian to tell him to stay back and be quiet when he notices that Finnian is gone. He wonders if Finnian left for the bathroom and then leaves the room and aims the gun at Sebastian who has come to inform him that their "special guests" have arrived. Therefore, Baldroy now needs to go and prepare to "entertain" them. Baldroy does not understand what he means, and Sebastian asks him if he has completed the task he gave him that afternoon before he leaves him yet again.
Baldroy finally understands what Sebastian meant to tell him with that task and runs to the stillroom. There, he looks through the cupboards until he finds a handle in one of them. He pulls it, and a cupboard moves to reveal a secret room. Baldroy lights a match and goes inside—and finds a room filled with all kinds of weapons.
