Nu Hai is a young panda featured as one of the main characters in the Amazon Prime series Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny. She and three other panda children (Bao, Fan Tong, and Jing) are members of the current Four Constellations by being in possession of the original members' chi, with Nu Hai holding the chi of Blue Dragon.

Biography[]

In The Paws of Destiny[]

Nu Hai is first introduced to be living with her brother, Bao, and her grandmother. She is initially shown to be eager for adventure, but is shown to be a bit over her head.

Nu Hai is one of the four pandas who absorbed the chi of the Four Constellations upon accidentally stumbling upon a cave beneath the Panda Village. There, she absorbed the chi of the Blue Dragon, who was the leader of the original Four Constellations. Afterwards, she begs with her friends to Po in hopes that he'll teach them Kung Fu. When ambushed by Jade Tusk and her entourage- Nu Hai and the other Four Constellations helped Po defeat them which finally convinced him to mentor them.

In "Blue Dragon Plays with Fire" when Po goes around trying to wake up the four pandas, Nu Hai is revealed to have already been up for quite some time due to being so excited to learn Kung Fu- even going as far as to create an entire list of all the Kung Fu she wants to learn. Po appreciates the enthusiasm. Po then brings her and her friends to a new place for them to train: an old and musty abandoned dojo at the highest point in Panda Village. Her friends are less than enthused about the poor conditions of the dojo, Nu Hai however is overjoyed at the amazing possibilities the dojo could bring. Po then sits the panda children down to tell them more about their hero Chi and the Four Constellations. Nu Hai however already "assigned a ton of homework" to herself to prepare for their first Kung Fu class, and already knew much about Blue Dragon. The panda children then get into an argument about who got what hero Chi, which then Po explains that it's impossible to trade their Chi powers with each other.

Some time later Nu Hai and the other panda children lead Po to a newly cleaned and renovated dojo. Nu Hai excitedly shows Po around to all the cool training equipment they added, prompting Po to tell her to "chill" and "focus," stressing the importance of not jumping ahead of herself. Nu Hai agrees and takes a big breath which she then agrees that it helped her feel more focused- but she is still incredibly excited about Kung Fu. Po then attempts to give them basic training in Kung Fu. The panda children aren't terrible but don't excel either. Po congrats them on a good first week. Later as Nu Hai, Bao, Jing, and Fan Tong leave school, Nu Hai makes a statement that suggests that she is their leader because she inherited Blue Dragon's Chi- and he was leader of his own Four Constellations. The rest of the panda children aren't sold on her being the leader. Suddenly a goose-messenger named Ping rushes into Panda Village with an urgent message for Dragon Master Po: bandits have overtaken Wu-Ran Village and the local constable requests his help. Nu Hai immediately rushes forward and asserts herself and her friends as the Dragon Master's students- making sure to mention that she is the leader. She says that they will deliver the message to Po for him. Nu Hai mentions that since they weren't able to get their hero Chi to activate in the dojo, perhaps the high stakes of the bandit ambush might forcefully activate it for them. Bao asks Nu Hai if she remembers what Po said about "taking deep breaths," and not "getting ahead of yourself," Nu Hai brushes him off and strokes his ego a bit to get him to agree with her. They decide to save the town without enlisting Po's help.

The Four Constellations arrive at Wu-Ran Village to see a bunch of huge and aggressive Yak bandits terrorizing Pika villagers. Nu Hai tries to assert herself and yells at them to stop. Due to the panda children's small size and young age, the Yaks simply laugh at them. After Jing exacerbates the situation by throwing rocks at them, the Yak bandits slowly close in on them. Nu Hai hopes that the heat of battle will bring on their Chi, but nothing happens. Nu Hai admits that she might have gotten ahead of herself, and struggles to come up with a new plan. She starts to panic. Suddenly, she has a mystical vision of a blue dragon leading her to an alleyway. She quickly leads her friends into the alley and they narrowly avoid the Yak's attacks. Unfortunately, the Yak Bandit Leader intercepts their path and physically restrains Jing and Bao. Nu Hai and Fan Tong try to fight him but he knocks them down with ease. Seeing her friends and brother in distress quickly causes Nu Hai to panic, however, she remembers Po's earlier advice to "just take a breath. Focus." Nu Hai takes a big breath in and calms herself down. Suddenly she gains the clarity she needs to activate her Blue Dragon hero's Chi which allows her to take out the Yak Bandit Leader with a super-powered Chi punch- saving her friends. Po arrives at the scene and takes out the remaining Yak bandits before expressing his disappointment with the four panda's rash actions. Nu Hai takes full responsibility and tells Po that it was her idea. Po assures her that he'd be way madder if her powers weren't "so awesome." He commends her on her ability to take heat for her mistakes, saying that it's a true leadership skill. Po asks how she was able to control her Chi, and Nu Hai says she just "stopped and took a breath."

Personality[]

... the four kids [are] led by Nu Hai, the energetic leader of the group. Nu Hai harbors big dreams of being a kung fu master, and what she lacks in skill she makes up for in heart and determination. Her admiration of Po borders on obsession, and she helps the group stay focused throughout their training. By absorbing the chi of Blue Dragon, Nu Hai is able to relax and hone in on her power.[1]

Nu Hai is the strong-willed leader of the group. She may be a bit bossy, but only because she's trying to keep the rest of the pandas focused on their mission to save the world. Just like Po, she is all heart and grit when she’s determined.[2]

As a natural-born leader, Nu Hai tends to come off as a bit bossy. She is feisty and a perfectionist, yet some of her actions come off as a tad reckless and can sometimes get her and her friends in trouble or danger. Despite this, Nu Hai prides herself in being traditional yet innovative and always strives to lead her friends to victory. Nu Hai also has sturdy morals and a strong sense of guilt and goodwill.

Fighting style and abilities[]

Like the other Four Constellations, Nu Hai can harness the chi of Blue Dragon to perform special abilities. She has used her chi to expel a large energy blast capable of knocking back enemies and objects alike. Nu Hai can power up her punches with her Chi which appears to take the form of a blue dragon gauntlet over her fist.

Nu Hai also appears to have a type of clairvoyancy that activates when she's in a tough spot which shows her the best path to take.

Relationships[]

Bao[]

As her twin brother, Nu Hai often finds Bao to be annoying and self-absorbed. She wishes he could take Kung fu and their hero Chi more seriously, and could do without his smug retorts. Despite this, she still loves and cares deeply for her brother.

Clothing[]

Nu Hai wears a red sleeveless qipao with a mossy green trim and a black floral design on the sides. She wears loose burgundy pants with bandages wrapped around her ankles and wrists. Her hair is tied up with a red band. This outfit is in great similarity and intentionally worn in homage to her hero, Tigress.[3]
