Takeshi Hongo (本郷 猛, Hongō Takeshi) is the main protagonist of the 2023 film, Shin Kamen Rider. He is a brilliant young man who was kidnapped and upgraded by SHOCKER through their augmentation, converting him into Batta Augment-01 (第１バッタオーグ, Dai Ichi Batta Ōgu). Hongo escaped and pledged to fight against SHOCKER to ensure human beings stay human, as the Kamen Rider (仮面ライダー, Kamen Raidā).

After Hongo lost his life in the final battle against Ichiro Midorikawa, his Prana continued to reside in his mask. Together with Hayato Ichimonji, the pair continue their crusade against Shocker as Kamen Rider No. 2+1 (仮面ライダー第2+1号, Kamen Raidā Dai Ni Purasu Ichi-gō).

History

Background

Takeshi Hongo witnessed his father, who was a policeman, being stabbed to death by a violent criminal he tried to ease. The strong despair he felt at that time and his father's willingness to help even criminals led Hongo to wish for the power to protect those he loved.

Shocker Augmentation

Hongo was abducted by Shocker under the recommendation of Dr. Hiroshi Midorikawa, a biochemist whom he studied under as a university student. His body was upgraded against his will by Midorikawa's research group into Batta Augment-01, the masterpiece of the Synthetic Insect-Hybrid Augmentation Project.

Personality

Before being augmented, Hongo was a person who liked to travel by motorcycle. He was not good at talking to others, so he was unemployed, but he was an excellent sportsman and a good student. Above all, he had a kind heart. That's why he became the Kamen Rider. He really doesn't like violence, but his strong desire to protect people has made him determined to continue fighting against Shocker.^[2]

Kamen Rider consists of the following parts:^[3][4]

• Mask (マスク, Masuku): The mask. It contains a system that boosts his survival instincts, making him more aggressive and suppresses any aversion to killing. It can also receive and store data by connecting to a computer. The back of the head reads "BATTA-AUG BAA-01".
• Muffler (マフラー, Mafurā)
• Protective Gear (防護服, Bōgo-fuku): The suit.
  • Converter Lung (コンバーターラング, Konbātā Rangu): The chest. The vents on the chest work in conjunction with the integrated belt and mask to capture wind into the Prana Absorption-Amplification System inside his body, condensing and converting Prana into bioenergy.

Portrayal

Takeshi Hongo is portrayed by Sousuke Ikematsu (池松 壮亮, Ikematsu Sōsuke) who also performed his own stunts as the Kamen Rider, with Shoki Kakegawa (掛川 将希, Kake'gawa Shoki) as a stand-in and for motion capture.

Design

The costume was designed by Isao Tsuge^[6]

Notes

• The Kamen Rider's suit is a refined version of the original Kamen Rider suit seen in the first thirteen episodes of the original series, with additional detail that emphasizes on the Rider's cyborg nature whilst still remaining faithful to the original suit design. It retains some of its classic features such as the exposed hair and neck, as well as the leather suit, gloves and boots.
  • While designing the suits for the Riders, the designers commented that it was difficult to produce a modernized suit design that could surpass those featured in past reimaginations such as Kamen Rider The First/The Next and Kamen Rider Black,^[7] whilst several other approaches gave an impression that was too similar to the Heisei and Reiwa-era Riders. In the end, the final design went back to basics, retaining the original design with minor refinements and modifications.^[8]
• While his official designation is simply "Kamen Rider", Takeshi's transformed form is also unofficially referred to as Kamen Rider No. 1 (仮面ライダー第1号, Kamen Raidā Dai Ichi-gō)^[9] by fans to distinguish him from the other Kamen Riders in the film.
