"They possess the same powers as you. They're Phase Variation Batta-Augments. While you're a solitary creature, they're gregarious. In the locust phase, grasshoppers turn black and form swarms. They also become more savage."
Ichiro Midorikawa introducing the Augments.[src]

Phase Variation Batta-Augments (大量発生型相変異バッタオーグ, Tairyō Hassei-gata Sōhen'i Batta Ōgu, Polymorphic Plague-Type Batta-Augs)[1] are a special Shocker task force under Ichiro Midorikawa's command in Shin Kamen Rider.

History[]

SKR-Phase-Variation-Batta-Augments

The group of Phase Variation Batta Augments preparing to fight Hongo/Kamen Rider.

The 11 Phase Variation Batta-Augments were created by Ichiro Midorikawa following Batta Augment-02 defecting from Shocker. Now prioritizing quality over quantity, Ichiro had created these mass-produced Augments with the purpose of bringing down the two renegade Augments. After Takeshi Hongo made up his mind and advanced towards Ichiro's lair, the Augment swarm would be standing in his path on mass-produced cyclones of their own. Immediately after Hongo realized he had no choice but to fight against them, the Phase Variation Batta-Augs would take to the air and assail their opponent with a hail of bullets from their machine guns. The Kamen Rider would use his Cyclone's plating as a shield against the bullets, before activatin the jump function on the bike's mufflers and using it to destroy one of the Mass-Produced Cyclones and subsequently its rider. The remaining 10 Augments would chase after him, pinning him to a wall and leaving him to hide behind his Cyclone as they would continue to fire upon him. Hongo would then use the Cyclone to send a second Phase Variation Batta-Aug flying off of its Cyclone.

Thinking quickly, the Kamen Rider would intercept two of the Augments trying to ram him from either side of him before using his Rider Kick to dispose of two more Augments. Immediately afterwards, another one of the Augments would mount the Hongo's Cyclone, attempting to rip the Typhoon off of him. The Kamen Rider would then force its mask off, revealing its hideously warped and deformed face before hitting it with a Rider Punch and kicking it off of his bike. The remaining Augments would then chase their predecessor down towards a pile of dump trucks, knocking him off of the cyclone using the explosive devices planted within. One of the Batta-Augs would then pin him down under the front wheel of its cyclone before continuously laying barrage of gunfire under his helmet. Just as it was about to damage the Kamen Rider's mask, Batta Augment-02 would rescue Hongo on his own Cyclone, using it to ram the Augment and send it flying into another pile of construction vehicles. The remaining 6 Phase Variation Batta-Augments would then use their Cyclones' self-destruct functions in an attempt to destroy the Double Riders, before engaging them in hand-to-hand combat. Unfortunately, due to Ichiro prioritizing quantity over quality, the Phase Variation Batta-Augments were quickly made short work of, with two of them even having their Converter Lung or Simplified Typhoon torn off in combat. The remaining 2 Augments were then driven into a wall by Hongo and Ichimonji's Double Rider Kick, creating a massive explosion with their demise.

A group of 11 Synthetic Insect-Hybrid Augments who were based on grasshoppers like their predecessors, and as such, possess the same combat power as the first Batta-Aug. However, they are more ferocious and attack in a group due to the fact that they are in a gregarious phase as opposed to the Double Riders' solitary phase. The Phase Variation Batta-Augs lack any free will or humanity, and are unable to return to human form due to their Typhoons not having the Prana Forced Ejection Mechanism used by the previous models.

Behind the Scenes[]

Portrayal[]

Phase Variation Batta-Augments were portrayed by various stunt actors from Gocoo.

Notes[]

  • The Phase Variation Batta-Augments are based on the Shocker Riders from the original Kamen Rider manga. Similar to their previous live-action counterparts, all of them bear yellow scarves.
  • The Phase Variation Batta-Augments are comprised of eleven members which is based on the number of members from the original manga.
    SKR-June-24-and-29-report
  • In one of the articles that Tachibana and Taki exchange to Ruriko regarding Shocker, it is mentioned that a group of eleven elementary school students on a bug hunting field trip up on Mt. Takao were reported missing and potentially brainwashed by Shocker. Given the fact that there's exactly eleven Phase Variation Batta-Augments, hinting at the grim implication that these augmented individuals were once the missing children.
  • Several live-action Phase Variation Batta-Augments suits were originally made for filming, though these scenes were later replaced with a fight sequence mostly rendered in CGI for the final film.
    Shin Kamen Rider Poster
  • According to director Hideaki Anno, the helmet on the final theatrical poster is actually a digital model of a Phase Variation Batta-Augment's mask prop, but edited with Sousuke Ikematsu's eye on it using Photoshop.[2]
  • In the Amazon Prime release of the film, their codename is given the alternative translation "Polymorphic Plague-Type" Batta Augments.
