Ichiro Midorikawa (緑川 イチロー, Midorikawa Ichirō) is the main antagonist of Shin Kamen Rider and the son of Doctor Midorikawa who was converted into an Augment by Shocker. He currently aims to save mankind through his pursuit of the Habitat Project, calling himself Kamen Rider No.0 (仮面ライダー第0号, Kamen Raidā Dai Zero-gō).[1][2]

Ichiro Midorikawa was the son of Hiroshi Midorikawa and his wife Shoko. At a young age, he was a young man driven by justice and a passion for motorcycles inherited from his father. He faced adversity from an early age due to his unwavering support for his bullied friend Mamoru and the tragedy of his mother's hospitalization and subsequent death due to a stabbing, that left him isolated from his peers. As he grappled with personal loss, Ichiro's tormentors exploited his suffering, leading to his expulsion from school after a confrontation.
Following his expulsion from school, Ichiro and his father found refuge in SHOCKER's research facility. Initially distrusting the organization and his father's allegiance to it, Ichiro would meet new allies like K, Kumo and Sasori. Despite initial hesitation, Ichiro grew closer to his newfound companions, especially after saving Kumo's life during a dire situation. However, a series of intense events unfolded, resulting in Ichiro being shot and hospitalized, prompting Dr. Midorikawa to perform emergency surgery, infusing Prana into Ichiro's body to save him.
Recovering remarkably and aligning with SHOCKER, Ichiro resolved to assist his father's research to better the world. Bonding with Kumo and Sasori, Ichiro formed strong friendships, akin to having older siblings. As the story unfolded, he learned of SHOCKER's factions and their conflicting ideals. Ichiro faced trials, including a confrontation with a rampaging Kumo, during which his empathy and determination to understand and save his friend prevailed.
As Ichiro matured within SHOCKER, he delved deeper into its origins and purpose alongside K. His commitment to helping others led to the development of innovative technology, but a rift emerged between him and his father due to ethical differences, notably concerning Ruriko, a girl Hiroshi had experimented on. Eventually, Ichiro, along with his allies, embarked on a journey to the United States, where their plans were entangled in a web orchestrated by a predictive AI named "Kai".
Shin Kamen Rider[]
Ichiro, now a high-ranking SHOCKER executive, worked on a peaceful plan called the Habitat Project with Ruriko before she left. Ichiro later transformed, spending much time in a cocoon. Despite being sealed, he stayed conscious, sensing the loss of fellow Augments' Prana. After his emergence as the Ultimate Augment, Ichiro confronted the Anti-SHOCKER alliance, easily overpowering them.
He confronted his sister Ruriko and Hongo, discussing his plans. Ruriko attempted to pariphalyze Ichiro, but he was immune due to her abilities. He asked Hongo about his relationship with Ruriko before dismissing him. Ichiro clashed with Hongo and distanced himself due to his aversion to violence. He created additional Batta Augments and faced an emotional moment upon sensing Ruriko's death. Hongo attempted a solo confrontation, leading to a clash with Ichiro's Augments, but they were ultimately destroyed with the aid of Hayato Ichimonji.
The two Kamen Riders interrupted Ichiro as he was finalizing the Habitat System. Ichiro repelled their attacks using Prana but underestimated them. His throne's destruction cut off his Prana supply, forcing him into a Augment form, Kamen Rider No. 0. He battled fiercely but was ultimately weakened. The Riders aimed to remove his mask, forcing a confrontation. Eventually, Ichiro's mask was shattered, dispersing his Prana.
Exhausted, he learned Ruriko's Prana had survived in Hongo's mask. After sitting in his throne, he would take off Hongo's mask and give it back to him, expressing his thanks to Hongo for allowing him to talk to her one last time before informing him that Hongo had also used up too much Prana. Ichiro would then decided to entrust Hongo with his sister, before finally succumbing to his injuries and dying for good.
Personality[]
In his childhood, Ichiro was a spirited, compassionate boy, inheriting his love for motorcycles from his father, Hiroshi. He faced bullying at school for defending his only friend, Mamoru, leading to isolation. His mother became his main support until her unjust death, sparking Ichiro's aversion to violence and distrust of others. Despite initial hesitation, he befriended Kumo and Sasori at SHOCKER, seeing them as elder siblings. Over time, his desire to protect the vulnerable grew, culminating in creating a combat suit with his father to pursue a violence-free world.
By the events of the main film, Ichiro had withdrawn from society, becoming emotionally distant and dismissive, losing his earlier virtues. He seemed uncaring towards friends and family in the organization, displaying indifference to Kumo-Aug's defeat. However, his mother's and Ruriko's deaths rekindled his vengeance against SHOCKER, until Hongo's efforts reconciled him with Ruriko. Realizing his mistakes, he supported his sister's wish to stop the Habitat Plan. Understanding Hongo's condition, Ichiro selflessly entrusted Ruriko's future to Takeshi, mirroring the kindness he once embodied.

Ichiro Midorikawa is portrayed by Mirai Moriyama (森山 未來, Moriyama Mirai).
Notes[]
- In the original outline, the character was supposed to be Ruriko's older sister, later changed to younger brother. After Mirai Moriyama was cast in the film, the character was revised to be Ruriko's older brother.[4]
- Hideaki Anno had based Ichiro's protrayal after Mirai Moriyama's previous performance as Tenmao in Seven Souls in Skull Castle.[5][6]
- According to the designer, Yutaka Izubuchi, Kamen Rider No.0's motif is based on the butterfly species Idea leuconoe and the design was inspired by Kamen Rider X and Shadow Moon.[7]
- Contrary to popular belief, the design of Kamen Rider No.0 was not influenced by Inazuman, another hero created by Shotaro Ishinomori, that features a blue butterfly motif. The Movie Shin Kamen Rider Official Visual Book clarified that the facial scars from Ichiro's transformation sequence were influenced by Inazuman.[8]
- In -Shin Kamen Rider SHOCKER SIDE-, Ichiro sports a combat suit that resembles Cross Fire, an early concept character that eventually evolved into the original Kamen Rider.
