“ | To me, "taking proper care of myself" means making sure I do what I can in the here and now. Because if I decided not to take action because of rules and customs and somebody died because I did nothing, I don't think I'd be able to forgive myself for that. | „ |
~ Masaki Kurosaki |
Masaki Kurosaki is a Quincy and a minor character in the manga/anime Bleach series. She is the wife of Isshin Kurosaki, and the mother of Ichigo Kurosaki, Karin Kurosaki and Yuzu Kurosaki. She is also the mother-in-law of Orihime Inoue, and the paternal grandmother of Kazui Kurosaki.
She is voiced by Sayaka Ōhara in the Japanese version of the anime. In the English version she was voiced by Ellyn Stern in the original anime and by Cherami Leigh as the teenage version in Bleach: Thousand Year War. Masaki was portrayed by Masami Nagasaki in the 2018 live-action film.
Personality[]
Masaki was described by Ichigo as being the center of the family's universe. She was a very good woman and was always cheerful since Ichigo mentioned that he never saw her get angry or sad. Ichigo's female friend, Tatsuki, also mentioned that whenever Masaki came to pick Ichigo up from his classes, he would always have a big smile on his face.
During her life, Masaki greatly enjoyed spending quality time with her husband and children. She was very protective toward her children, and she even risked her own life to protect her son when he was trying to rescue a girl by the river. This trait was pasted down to her son which gave Ichigo the determination to protect those he loves.
History[]
Masaki was born on June 9. When she was a teenager, her parents died leaving her to be an orphan thus becoming the last member of the Kurosaki family. She was eventually taken in by Izumi Shida, so that she would be protected as one of the last Quincy so that one day, she would marry Ryūken Ishida to keep the Ishida bloodline pure and keep the Quincies from becoming extinct. Izumi had scolded her at least once because of her slow training progress.
One day, Masaki sensed a Hollow fighting with a Shinigami named Isshin Shiba, so she rushed over to rescue him and allowed the Hollow to bite her before she managed to kill it in front of him. Masaki and Isshin subsequently meet for the first time and ask for each other's names.
Years later, Masaki married Isshin Shiba, and nine month later, she give birth to their first and only son, Ichigo. Four years later, she gives birth to twins girls, Karin (the second daughter) and Yuzu (the third daughter). After Karin and Yuzu were born, her eldest son Ichigo took martial arts classes at 4 years old so that he can become stronger and protect both his mother and sisters. Masaki always came and picked up Ichigo from his classes.
On June 17, one month before Ichigo's tenth birthday, Masaki was picking her 9-year-old son up during a rainstorm and Ichigo noticed a girl near the river as if she wants to jump in. Ichigo let go of his mother's hand and ran over to save the girl, with his mother running after him and yelling him to stop until everything went black. Ichigo woke up to find his mother on top of him severely wounded and dead, with Ichigo not knowing what really happened to her.
Every year on June 17, the Kurosaki family would visit Masaki's grave to pay her their respects. Six years later, it was revealed that Masaki was killed by a Hollow named Grand Fisher who kills children (women in the anime), and that the girl was actually Grand Fisher's antenna bait to use as a lure for his victims.
It wouldn't be until two years afterwards that after Ichigo learned he was part Quincy, when his father Isshin decided to tell Ichigo the secret of his roots, at the end of he learned that it was actually Yhwach who was responsible for the events that led to Masaki's death at the hands of Grand Fisher by eliminating all the Quinces he felt were impure with Auswählen, resulting in Masaki, who would have been able to defeat Grand Fisher, to actually lose her spiritual powers which rendered her vulnerable to Grand Fisher's attack.
This ultimately resulted in Ichigo to work together with Uryū Ishida whose mother Kanae Katagiri was also one of Yhwach's victims to bring down Yhwach in the series finale and avenged Masaki's death, thanks to the piece of silver that Ryuken removed from Kanae's remains for Uryū to shut down Yhwach's powers.
