In the undening rain... Through the winding, neon cityscape... Draped in my raincoat, I roam in search of my missing memories. What secrets lurk in this labyrinth of drainage pipes...? We have yet to find the answer. The story of detectives facing the darkness that enshrouds the truth... ...is about to begin.
~ Yuma monologuing about investigating Kanai Ward in the prologue.
Shinigami: Hey, Master... You've always been relying on others until now, isn't it time for you to handle this by yourself? You may be a trainee, but you're still a detective. Try to save everybody on your own, without asking for help.
Yuma: Save them all...on my own?
Shinigami: Nah. I guess you're really not that type of person, Master. I'm just teasing ya.
~ Shinigami encouraging Yuma to solve Dr. Huesca's murder in Chapter 4 by himself, prompting him to do so with Vivia Twilight following behind.

Yuma Kokohead is the main protagonist of the 2023 adventure game Master Detective Archives: Rain Code.

He is a supposed detective trainee of the World Detective Organization who was granted permission to investigate Kanai Ward by himself of the aforementioned name, and his talent is supposedly cooking. Specifically, he came to Kanai Ward alongside other Master Detectives to solve Kanai Ward's Ultimate Secret. However, he is in truth the organization's leader, Number One, and the old man giving orders for the detectives to investigate the city is actually a body double he personally hired. Number One had the death god Shinigami possess him to conceal his Forensic Forte: Coalescence, allowing him to enter Kanai Ward under the alternate identity of "Yuma Kokohead", the real trainee who has that name. He is enemies with his evil homunculus, the culprit of the Great Global Mystery, and the CEO of Amaterasu Corporation, Makoto Kagutsuchi, who he turns out to have actually been a mere pawn for the corrupt CEO to use in a bigger scheme.

He is voiced by Katsumi Fukuhara in the Japanese version and Lucien Dodge in the English version, who also voiced Hifumi Yamada in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and K1-B0 in Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony.

He wears the Master Detective uniform though with shorts and black tights, boots of the same color with neon blue soles. Yuma wears a purple raincoat in the style of a cape whenever he's outside or in a Mystery Labyrinth, on the back is a stylized alchemical symbol for Sulfur in neon blue, which glows in the dark. On the front of the coat it has a silver badge for the World Detective Organization. Yuma also wears a purple bucket hat.

Heroic Acts[]

  • He avenges the deaths of multiple people in Kanai Ward by exposing the culprits behind them, these including:
    • The Master Detectives in Chapter 0 who are killed by the hitman impersonating the posthumous Zilch Alexander, who turns out to have specifically been personally hired by Yomi Hellsmile to stop any outsiders from entering Kanai Ward.
    • The albeit immoral victims of the Nail Man, exposing the priest and worshipper as the true culprits.
    • Theater club member Karen, who was also immoral as it turns out that she was killed in a revenge plot by Waruna, Yoshiko and Kurane for killing their friend Aiko six months ago. Kurumi Wendy gives him information on Amaterasu Corporation's homunculus research in return for doing this as part of their previous deal with one another.
    • Shachi, who Icardi framed and killed as part of his scheme to escape Kanai Ward and funding his escape by robbing the city's banks.
    • Yakou Furio and Dr. Huesca, the former of whom plotted his own death when he killed the doctor while the latter plotted to escape Amaterasu Corporation HQ, exposing Yomi Hellsmile as the one who manipulated Yakou into committing the murder of the doctor for personal gain when he discovered the doctor was planning to escape Kanai Ward on his own.
    • The death row inmates kidnapped globally by Makoto Kagutsuchi so the defective homunculi within Kanai Ward can survive on human flesh by exploiting his identity as Number One's homunculus, who Yuma convinces to discard his immoral methods of protecting Kanai Ward after exposing him of his corruption as CEO of Amaterasu Corporation and role in creating the Great Global Mystery case.
  • He opposes the amoral mindset of his death god assistant Shinigami and repeatedly chastises her for her occasional callousness. This applies to the other misfit detectives he's surrounded by in the Nocturnal Detective Agency, clearly annoyed by their indifference as well despite the situation in Kanai Ward.
  • Yuma is involved in the aforementioned cases in the first place due to being the only one courageous enough in the Nocturnal Detective Agency to actively oppose Amaterasu Corporation's rule over Kanai Ward, something the other detectives fail to do due to being too willing to cause conflict among each other instead. This also involves him defying his reluctant boss, Yakou Furio, despite his orders.
  • Despite the fact that the culprits' executions are intended to be a punishment for their crimes, Yuma dislikes knowing that he personally killed them upon solving each Mystery Labyrinth and believes that he doesn't have the right to decide if they should die for their crimes outright. This also drives him to be reluctant to expose the truth, even though he needs to do so as part of his occupation as a detective.
  • Him reforming Makoto Kagutsuchi to reveal to the amnesiac residents of Kanai Ward that they're defective homunculi also allows Kanai Ward to improve alongside it, and Makoto's previous pragmatic expulsion of Yomi's role in the Peacekeepers also means that Yomi isn't present to cause trouble in the city anymore.

Quotes[]

Chapter 2: A Silent Curtain Call[]

Yuma: I see... Sometimes, the truth can be a goal that helps you press onward. Then I need to do what I can. I have to find the truth behind this case.
Shinigami: On the other hand, some truths make you want to die when you discover them.
Yuma: Be quiet. Besides, even if that were the case... If I let the truth be buried like this, more bad things could happen. That's why I'm going to help her find the truth. It's my duty as a detective.
Shinigami: Will you stop confusing detectives with heroes? Regardless, I have nothing to do with this. So, whatever.
Yuma: For someone who has nothing to do with it, you sure have some strong opinions.
Shinigami: Hmph!
~ Yuma and Shinigami arguing about the consequences of discovering harsh truths as a detective, the latter attempting to warn Yuma not to find the truth at the expense of his sanity.

Chapter 5: And Then I Was Gone[]

10 years ago, Amaterasu Corporation received a request from the UG to research homunculi. The UG planned to use these immortal, synthetic humans for military purposes. A massive amount of money was poured into the research, and Amaterasu and Kanai Ward developed quickly as a result! But the UG also set up their own research facility, which pit the two organizations against each other... And three years ago, the UG facility finally succeeded in creating a homunculus! This was birth of the homunculus based on the top detective of the WDO, Number One. The first of its kind in the world... You, Makoto Kagutsuchi! [...] The only successful specimen in existence... Your creation was the root cause of the grand mystery this city got dragged into! [...] The Peacekeeper's Yomi held the real power in Amaterasu, and upon hearing of the UG facility's successful experiment... Amaterasu panicked and extracted blood from all the residents of Kanai Ward to initiate Project: Homunculus! But the experiment failed, and the defective homunculi went berserk after exposure to sunlight, ravaging the city. This is The Blank Week Mystery. You arrived at the city during the events and tried to rectify things. You made the rain cloud generator to block out the sun and brought the people back to their senses... But the original residents had already been wiped out by then! The homunculi didn't remember anything from the blank week, returning to their lives thinking they were human... And the UG decided to exterminate Kanai Ward along with the defective homunculi. [...] But when you found out about the UG's inhumane research... You blackmailed them to cover up the events of the The Blank Week Mystery! [...] After your negotiations with the UG, Kanai Ward became isolated and independent. And true to his word, the former CEO of Amaterasu abdicated his position to you. You immediately put an end to the homunculus research. This was to prevent the creation of any more tragic homunculi, and to hide their existence from the world! Then, posing as Number One, you took advantage of the WDO. You abducted vicious criminals and brought them to Kanai Ward. [...] These criminals were turned into food for the city's homunculi. This is the truth behind the global kidnapping case! [...] Director Yomi was your biggest obstacle in protecting the homunculi of Kanai Ward. He and Dr. Huesca were planning to leak information about them to the outside world. If Kanai Ward's secret had been made public, the UG would have been forced to act. Yomi grew too powerful, so you summoned Master Detectives to Kanai Ward to get rid of him for you! Once gathered here, we faced off with the Peacekeepers just like you wanted. And you helped Chief Yakou get his revenge from behind the scenes, taking Dr. Huesca and Yomi out of the picture! [...] This is everything that happened in Kanai Ward! Makoto Kagutsuchi! Using Kanai Ward as your excuse... ...You tried to enshroud everything, including your own crimes, in mystery!
~ Yuma's final speech to Makoto Kagutsuchi during the final boss battle sequence, calling him out for his wrongdoings while Makoto attempts to kill him in return.

Trivia[]

  • Despite the other Master Detectives' assistance in the cases during each chapter, the only reason the cases are present to begin with is due to Yuma defying Yakou Furio's orders not to solve the game's main mystery (Kanai Ward's Ultimate Secret, The Great Global Mystery) and the assistants being forced to play along. Each assistant (Halara, Desuhiko, Fubuki, Vivia) does not attempt to solve the game's main mystery by their own volition due to Chief Yakou's cowardice preventing them from taking charge themselves (Halara's defiance in Chapter 2 not accounted for as there was no known information gained), only being dragged along by the protagonist.
  • Yuma is notably absent from the game's additional DLC stories that are set in Kanai Ward, alongside his arch-enemies, Makoto Kagutsuchi and Yomi Hellsmile, Kurumi Wendy, the Ramen Stand Owner, and pretty much anyone else relevant only to the main plot of the game. The stories are instead entirely devoted to the other detectives of the Nocturnal Detective Agency and their own adventures with him nowhere to be found.
