Biography[]
Early Life[]
Charles McNider was born presumably during the 1920s and became a medical physician and surgeon, and collaborated on a new anti-viral serum with his assistant Myra Mason. When learning from a cop that "Killer" Maroni nearly killed a key witness that was going to testify against him, and McNider needed to treat the witness. Maroni discovered that the witness was still alive, and sent his thug to finish him, and the thug lobbed a grenade through the hospital window. McNider survived the explosion, but shards of glass flew into his eyes, permanently blinding him.
Becoming Doctor Mid-Nite[]
After the incident, McNider put himself into a therapy program and spent evenings practicing gymnastics, and also started writing since his medical career was over. When he treated a wood owl that crashed through his window study one evening, McNider tore the bandages off of his eyes when the noise startled him, and realized he could see perfectly in the dark. He then turned on the light, becoming blind again until he turned off the lights, which gave him infrared vision. With his new vision, McNider realized he could fight against crime and "Killer" Maroni, and developed himself a modified goggles that allowed his infrared to pass through. Becoming "Doctor Mid-Nite", he created gadgets for himself to use, and succeeded in apprehending Maroni, and brining justice to the community. Though MCNider continued to fight against crime, he soon realized that medical professionals could use science for their own agenda.
When learning that Professor Elba was using an "Insanity Formula" that caused humans being to behave like animals, Doctor Mid-Nite asked for the help of the Justice of Society of America. The group stopped Elba, and despite the death of the professor, McNider's bravery and heroism awarded him a place on the Justice Society. McNider served the team for years, and also became a member of the All-Star Squadron until the end of the Second World War. When the Justice Society was disbanded by the manipulation of Vandal Savage, McNider continued to expose organized crime and later donned the mantle of "Starman" when Ted Knight suffered a nervous breakdown. Though McNider returned to heroics when the Justice League was formed, he decided to return to his medical profession and mentor Beth Chapel and Pieter Cross. During his return to heroics, he helped heroes fight off the Ultra-Humanite and Extant, which lead to his, Al Pratt, and Hourman to lose their lives in the process during Zero Hour. Despite his death, Doctor Mid-Nite's legacy continued with Beth Chapel and later Pieter Cross taking the mantle.
