William "Buddy" Hobbs, better known as Buddy The Elf , is the titular main protagonist of the 2003 film Elf. He is the son of Walter Hobbs and Susan Wells, and the adoptive son of Papa Elf.
He is played by Will Ferrell who also voiced Ted Shackelford (The Man with the Yellow Hat) in the Curious George movies, Megamind in the movie of the same name, Reggie in Strays, Ron Burgundy in Anchorman and its sequel, Brennan Huff in Step Brothers, and the Mattel CEO in Barbie.

Early life[]
Buddy was born on December 18, 1973 to Susan Wells, who died shortly after, never being able to tell her college boyfriend, Walter Hobbs, that she had a baby. On Christmas that same year, after Santa Claus comes down the chimney, Baby Buddy spots a teddy bear inside Santa's sack and crawls into it, At The North Pole the elves find William and assume that his name is Buddy due to his "Little Buddy diapers". Papa Elf adopts Buddy.
Elf[]
30 years later, Buddy is working as a quality inspector for the toys, having recently been moved from toy making due to his inferior abilities. Despite being twice the size of every other elf, he still doesn’t realize that he's a human. After overhearing the other elves talking about him, Papa Elf tells Buddy the truth. After being told his birth father is on the naughty list Buddy travels to New York to meet his father.
Life in New York[]
Upon being escorted out of The Empire State Building Buddy is told to go back to Gimbels where he meets and falls in love with Jovie. Buddy learns that Santa is Coming to the store he pulls an all nighter decorating the entire store from top to bottom. While finishing Buddy overhears Jovie singing "Baby It's Cold Outside" going to investigate ends up walking in on Jovie showering in the women’s locker room.
Getting Close with Walter[]
Buddy goes to work with Walter after realizing that he can’t be left home alone in the apartment after he brings home a Christmas tree that he chopped down in the park with Michael. He becomes a pest when Walter tries to get his work done and to keep Buddy out of his hair, Walter arranges him to work in the mailroom basement where Buddy accidentally becomes intoxicated due to mistaking hard liquor for syrup and causes a scene.

- Before Will Ferrell was cast as Buddy the elf, Jim Carrey and Chris Farley were considered for the role back in the 1990's when the film was in development
- Buddy can't really assimilate properly into modern human society, due to his ignorance of their laws and norms. And since he's already an adult, there's little hope of any substantial improvement; though he's improved enough to have a good marriage.
- A psychiatrist his father had diagnose him came to the conclusion that Buddy suffered a terrible trauma and was living in a delusion to comfort himself.
- You could mistake him for somebody who's on the extreme end of the autism spectrum; but this is due to the environment in which which was raised.
- It's likely he spends most of his time at home with his daughter, while his wife handles the finances.
- Considering elves pretty much only eat sugary food, it's amazing Buddy doesn't have diabetes. Though it's possible Santa used some magic on Buddy to make his digestive system compatible with an elven diet.
- It's unknown why Santa didn't try taking him to back to the orphanage after discovering his mistake; considering America was his last stop before Buddy stumbled into the present sack.
- Buddy now works as a children's book author after the film, using his life and what he knows from his time at the North Pole as inspiration.
- Buddy is 30 years old by the time of the movie.
- When Buddy tried to hug a raccoon but the raccoon bit him on the neck, Buddy didn’t seem to have rabies. It might be possible Santa used magic on Buddy to make him not get diseases from doing stupid stuff and the magic wore off after he found his dad. Which the magic could also be the reason Buddy didn’t get hypothermia from traveling from the North Pole all the way to New York.
