Fluffy[1] is a typical white, female house cat owned by Tifa Lockhart in Before Crisis -Final Fantasy VII-, Final Fantasy VII Remake Trace of Two Pasts, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
Living in Nibelheim with Tifa, Fluffy frequently ventured off through Mt Nibel, leaving Tifa and other villagers to be on the lookout for her out of concerns for her safety.
History[]
Fluffy was one of the litter kittens owned by Zander, Nibelheim's village elder. On May 3, 1999, after Tifa had begged her father, Brian Lockhart, for a cat for years, Zander offered Tifa a choice of one on her twelfth birthday, believing she would be the perfect person to take one home.[note 1] Tifa dropped her halfway across the village square on the way back to her house and sprained her ankle, and Fluffy ran off. Zander identified the cat as Fluffy when Brian coordinated a village search (meaning the name "Fluffy" stuck and Tifa never had the chance to name her cat).[2]
Fluffy was found by Cloud Strife near a trailhead just past the gate, but because he was too shy to bring it to her, Claudia Strife brought it to the Lockharts' home instead.[3] Cloud later found Fluffy on another Mt. Nibel trip and told Tifa about it in a brief exchange of few words; this was their last conversation before the two made the promise at the water tower.[4]
On September 21, 0002 (depicted in "The Awakening of the Dark Harbinger" in Before Crisis and during Trace of Two Pasts), Fluffy ran away again to Mt. Nibel, and was spotted there by a villager named Marc Banner. Tifa followed, believing she could handle the monsters, unprepared for how mutated the bugs were from those she had seen in the past.[5] She was rescued by female Turk[note 2] who was making her way to the Nibel Reactor after being blown off course during their parachute drop. Following their investigation of the mako reactor, the Turk took Tifa and her cat back to Nibelheim via the Shinra ropeway and, following the ropeway's destruction, on foot.[6]
On October 1 0002 (the events of the Nibelheim Incident), as depicted in "The Scar that Sunders the Calm" in Before Crisis, Fluffy followed Tifa to the Nibel Reactor and led Rashard Zangan to her unconscious body at the base of the stairs. The cat wandered the remnants of the town as the Player Turk fretted over the moral implications of covering up of the incident.[7]
Characteristics[]
Fluffy was a white cat with a red bandana.[5] A mischievous cat, she had a penchant for running away. After a while, Tifa realized Fluffy would come back on her own, but nonetheless wanted to look for her, feeling it unfair not to,[4] fearing the guilt if she could not find him, and fearing being perceived by other villagers as the "lazy Lockhart girl" too uncaring to look for her cat.[8] Fluffy's excursions were to look for food, as Cloud once found her munching on a dead bird,[4] and many times she simply returned when a villager put out a dish for food.[8]
Behind the scenes[]
In the Japanese release of Trace of Two Pasts, Fluffy was instead named "Maru", which translates to "round" and is also a generic name for a cat in Japanese.
Notes[]
Annotations[]
- ↑ Tifa was born May 3, 1987, meaning she would have owned Fluffy on 1999.
- ↑ In Before Crisis, it is the Player Turk, who can be either male or female, that meets Tifa. In Trace of Two Pasts, Tifa describes the Turk simply as "a woman from Shinra" who was wearing a black suit, and from whom she never got a name.[5]
