Glen Reiner is a character in Final Fantasy VII Remake: Picturing the Past. An ambitious member of the Shinra Electric Power Company military, he signed up for the Special Geological Survey Initiative, where he would search the planet for the promised land. Reiner's involvement in the program led him to suffer from mako poisoning.

History[]

Glen Reiner grew up in the slums of Midgar, as neighbors with Geddie Bach. When Reiner enlisted in Shinra's military, he befriended Lilisa Meg and Joann Liu, becoming a trio of friends. Reiner invited Bach to hang out with his new friends, making him a regular fourth in their trio despite working in Shinra's Research and Development. The group would spend nights and weekends together, cooking meals, drinking, and talking about their ambitions. Reiner and Liu were particularly ambitious, while Meg, the poorest of the group, was more content with just being in uniform.[1]

Reiner was assigned to search Cosmo Canyon.[2] Though Meg threw a party for him and Liu before the two departed, Meg became upset and begged Reiner not to go, confessing romantic feelings for him. Liu stepped away from the party and, upon her return, found Bach, Meg, and Reiner all very ill from mako poisoning from Meg's casserole,[3] having been poisoned by Bach.[4] The night after, Bachtold Liu he did not want Reiner to lose his shot and offered to take Reiner's place in the Special Geological Survey Initiative come back successful, slipping into Reiner's hospital room to take the dog tags from his neck; Liu at the time thought he was doing this selflessly.[5]

Bach traveled in a helicopter piloted by Jack Klein in place of Reiner. After Liu was dropped off at Fort Condor, Bach, still posing as Reiner, paid the pilot 10,000 gil to change course from Cosmo Canyon to Mideel.[6] Bach was admitted to the clinic for a torn ligament in his right ankle and Type III mako poisoning, and his records were listed under Glen Reiner's name.[7]

Glen Reiner, along with Lilisa Meg and Geddie Bach, returned to Midgar gathering in groups at the train graveyard, where they wore black robes, and were tattooed with numbers. As a combatant, Shinra claimed he was KIA during the war, and when Reiner and others were instead seen alive but mako poisoned and wearing black robes, Shinra claimed there had been errors in KIA reports due to the chaos of the war. On one occasion, fifteen years after the survey incident, Lonny went with Joann Liu and saw Glen Reiner and the others there.[8]
