Jay is a minor character in Final Fantasy VII Remake. He is a bodybuilder at Jules' gym in the Wall Market district of Sector 6, and the second opponent in the "Squats" and "Pull-Ups" minigames.
History[]
In "The Town That Never Sleeps", Jay was training at the Wall Market gym with Jules and Ronnie when Cloud entered. He asked if Cloud wanted to work out and put some muscle on his "bony frame". Jay challenged Cloud to a squats competition after Ronnie was beaten and was surprised by Cloud's performance upon losing, believing him to be in "incredible shape". He commentated and cheered for Jules while the latter competed with Cloud.[1]
During "In Search of Hope", Jay was impressed by Andrea's nonstop pull-ups, commenting that he could hear his "lats screaming out in pain". He faced off against Tifa in a pull-ups competition, but was ultimately beaten, acknowledging her as a "true champion" and showing interest in challenging her again sometime.[2]
Characteristics[]
Appearance[]
Jay is a young man with a muscular build. He has lightly tanned skin, tufted blond hair shaved on the sides, and brown eyes. He wears a red, orange, black, and white singlet, white wrapped gloves, blue kneepads, dark blue foot wraps, and a white towel around his neck.
Personality[]
Jay is an enthusiastic and cocky bodybuilder who greatly enjoys working out. He loves competing, acknowledges those who beat him, those in shape, as well as cheering on his fellow trainers. Jay respects the head trainer Jules, referring to his athleticism as "poetry in motion".[1][2]
Gameplay[]
Jay is the second opponent in the "Squats" minigame as part of the Amateur level; Cloud is given a Luck Up Materia upon beating him. He is also the second opponent of the Pull-Ups minigame as part of the Amateur level again; Tifa gets a Magic Up Materia as a reward for besting him.
Behind the scenes[]
Jay is heavily based on two bodybuilders in red outfit who trained in Big Bro's gym in the original game. Another character using the same model was seen among Mukki's entourage when they burst into the Group Room.
Etymology[]
In Japanese, his name (San To) refers to the Japanese word for triceps.[3] His name in the English dub is a possible reference to legendary American bodybuilder Jay Cutler.
