I couldn't miss the chance to practice my drawing!
The undying phoenix is said to call back souls from the heavens, but to win the attention of such fabled bird, you must give up a feather as an offering. The best are the downy feathers of the tail... hence the term phoenix down, see? Mark well that not just any feather will do. Depending on quality and size, the blessing received varies greatly. Displeased? You get what you pay for.
Kirrik, Pugilist, Aletap Rumors
Phoenix Down (フェニックスの尾, Fenikkusu no o?, lit. Phoenix Tail), sometimes known as Fenix Down or Life, is a recurring common item in the Final Fantasy series. The "Down" refers to the down feathers of a bird, the undercoat of feathers beneath the visible layer on top. The down feathers of a Phoenix would return people from the dead as a Phoenix itself does. The Aletap Rumors of Final Fantasy XII says that the Phoenix Down works by being offered to appeal to the mystical Phoenix itself to allow a lost soul to return, with the quality and overall beauty of the current feather being a crucial factor.
Phoenix Downs are used to revive characters who have been knocked out in battle. Like most curative items and spells, characters can also throw a Phoenix Down at an undead enemy in most games, resulting in damage or instant death, although some undead enemies and bosses are immune to this. Alternatives to a Phoenix Down are the White Magic spells Raise and Arise. There is also a Mega Phoenix item in some games that revives all characters.
In games where only one character is controlled, such as Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII- and Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-, instead of reviving a fallen character, the Phoenix Down casts Reraise on the player.

Etymology[]
phoenix or phenix (Greek: φοῖνιξ phoinix; Latin: phoenix, phœnix, fenix) is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. According to some sources, the phoenix dies in a show of flames and combustion, although there are other sources that claim that the legendary bird dies and simply decomposes before being born again. According to some texts, the phoenix could live over 1,400 years before rebirth.
In Greek mythology, aThe down of birds is a layer of fine feathers found under the tougher exterior feathers. Very young birds are clad only in down.
