For an overview of the faction, see Commonwealth Minutemen. |
The minutemen are members of the Commonwealth Minutemen, a volunteer defensive militia that operates in the namesake Commonwealth since at least the 2180s, but by the late 23rd century, began to fall into decline. They appear in Fallout 4 if the Sole Survivor completes the faction quest The First Step by helping Preston Garvey rebuild the Minutemen as its new general.
Background[]
Most, if not all members of the Commonwealth Minutemen are civilian volunteers, coming from the independent farms and settled towns of the Commonwealth. Joining up with the Minutemen meant they chose to give up their more peaceful lives of farming in favor of traveling around the region to honor the group's motto to "protect the people at a minute's notice" from all manner of threats including raiders, super mutants, and hostile wildlife such as yao guai and deathclaws.
While their strength dropped off dramatically towards the latter half of the 23rd century, particularly after both the loss of Fort Independence and the Quincy Massacre, small bands of active minutemen can still be seen throughout the Commonwealth, doing their duty of shepherding traders and travelers through the dangerous countryside.
Characteristics[]
While the average minuteman's kit can vary widely, they are almost always seen wearing their distinctive tricorn hats and button-down uniform, armed with a variety of weapons including the group's signature weapon, the laser musket.

Effects of player's actions[]
Should the player character side with the Minutemen and complete The Nuclear Option (Minutemen), Minutemen patrols across the Commonwealth will be a much more common sight, and with more numbers per patrol. Some patrols may have attack dogs. They will address the Sole Survivor as their general and make brief comments regarding their travels.
