- “Icicles!”
- ―Summer's catchphrase
Summer Penguin is a female Muppet penguin featured in the 2018 version of Muppet Babies. She is so creative, loves to draw, paint, and dance all at the same time. She is the smallest of the Muppet Babies group and has the biggest heart. Unlike the other main characters, she was created specifically for the 2018 version of the show and has no real-life puppet.
Background[]
Development[]
Summer was conceived as a female character to balance out the Muppet Babies cast. The show's executive producer Tom Warburton reflects on the creation of Summer:
- “It was me and our art director Chris Moreno sitting in a room just doodling and drawing, and I came up with this little sketch of a lollipop-shaped penguin with a turtleneck. We probably did a hundred different characters trying to figure out who this was going to be, and when we came into Disney Jr. with this penguin and a couple others, they immediately went to the penguin and said, 'That one.' We have that original drawing hanging in the studio now.”

Personality[]
Summer is a fun-loving penguin with the most caring heart of all. She always loves playing with her friends and is always willing to help others in need. She has a knack for dancing, painting, drawing and even magic. She often says things like ‘Icicles' whenever she's excited or intrigued and ‘fish sticks' whenever something goes awry.
While Summer doesn't typically get angry, she is known to be upset from time to time for various reasons. For instance, she once had a bad day when everything went wrong for her and it made her really sad. She also gets discouraged whenever her friends don't listen to her or when someone calls her a mean name. Her ponytail often droops down whenever she feels sad or depressed. She is also known to have a fear of storms as well. While she does have her struggles at times, she is able to overcome them with the help of her friends.
Physical appearance[]
Summer appears as a young penguin with white and purple feathers. Her hairstyle is made with a tuft on the forehead and a ponytail in the back fastened with a pink hair tie. She has eyelashes, a yellow beak, and two flat yellow flippers for feet.
Her outfit consists of a light blue turtleneck sweater with a sun on the front and a salmon pink stripe on the rims of each arm sleeve. Attached to her sweater is a matching light blue skirt with pink on the rim.
Her detective outfit is the same as her regular outfit, but includes a brown detective hat with a magnifying glass.
Quotes[]
"Icicles!"
"Aw, fish sticks!"
"I'm a criminal."
Relationships[]
Kermit[]
Piggy[]
Summer and Piggy are both best friends. The most frequent times they play together are when they pretend to be their superhero alter egos: Captain Icecube and Super Fabulous respectively. In fact, their superhero adventures are what sparked the friendship in the first place where at first, Piggy didn't want to play with Summer and wouldn't let her help on the hero mission. Eventually though, she managed to warm up to her and became friends ever since.
Although they're friends, there are times when they can have their conflicts, especially when Summer finds it difficult to put up with Piggy's bossy attitude. For instance, Summer was thrown into the blanket dungeon after breaking the rule for saying ‘no'.
Gonzo[]
Gonzo is another one of Summer's friends.
One of their most memorable moments is in "Summer the Great", in which she trains to be a stunt devil like him. At first, Summer's gets discouraged that she can't do anything like Gonzo, but Gonzo assures her that even if their ways might not be exactly the same, she can still be great in her own way.

Miss Nanny[]
Whenever Summer feels down and wants to be alone, Miss Nanny often steps in to help out. As the guardian of the daycare, she often explains things that the kids may not understand.
In the case of Summer, Miss Nanny helped cheer her up when she was upset about her sno-cone shop. She talked to Summer and told her that it's okay to be open to other people's ideas, but if they do something that upsets her, then she should speak up and tell them.
Another instance was in "It's Not Easy Being Greeny", where she tells Summer and the others that their plant had died. This makes everyone sad, but Miss Nanny explains that death happens to all living things, and while it may upset you when they go, you'll always have happy memories of them.
